Selene stumbled out of the car, tugging her loose dress into place.
Matteo’s eyes followed her until she completely disappeared into the house. He clenched his jaw and exhaled a deep breath, his fingers tugging his buttons closed before he pulled a cigarette from his pocket, lighting it up and drawing in a long drag.
“Selene?” Ava called as soon as her eyes settled on her, scurrying to her side.
A gasp tore from her lips as her eyes trailed Selene’s body—the mess left of the little fabric clinging to her skin—to the bandage on her arm, the blood already seeping through.
“You’re… you’re bleeding!” she choked and tried to touch Selene, but Selene stepped back quickly.
“What… what happened?” Ava asked.
Selene hissed and scampered up the stairs, her mind focused on only one thing as her thoughts spiralled wildly. She had come back for just one thing—revenge. And until that was certain, she wasn’t going to let anything ruin it.
“What happened, Selene… say something!” Ava called loudly, following quickly behind her as Selene walked into her bedroom.
“You’re injured—”
“Just shut up, Ava…” Selene barked, pissed.
She hastened to her table, wildly searching for something, tossing its contents to the ground without concern.
“Is everything okay? What is going on?”
“Just where the hell is it!” Selene screamed in frustration, her hand clawing through her messed-up hair as she started to pace.
“What are you searching for—”
“I should still have some, right?” Selene suddenly blurted, her eyes snapping to Ava.
Ava raised a brow, stepping closer, confused.
“Still have what?”
“The pills, Ava… tell me I still have some in this house—the birth control pills.”
Ava’s eyes snapped wide, a gasp following immediately.
“Don’t tell me you—”
“Yes, I did… and don’t f*****g ask me any questions. Just tell me where the pills are,” Selene rumbled.
Ava exhaled, shaking her head slowly, and started to pace too.
“So you mean to tell me you already had your first night with Damien… he’s already head over heels for you?”
Selene said nothing and looked away, tucking in her lower lip.
“Well, it’s a good thing… the earlier you make your way into Damien’s life, the faster this whole revenge thing passes and you can return to your normal life…” Ava ranted, pacing as though she was trying to convince herself.
Selene sighed and wobbled to the bed, settling down as pain rippled through her arm again.
“So now that you’ve gotten Damien… it’s just a matter of time before he starts to trust you, lets his guard down and—”
“It’s not Damien,” Selene growled, shutting Ava up instantly.
Ava batted her lashes, confused.
“What do you mean it’s not—”
“Enough with the questions, Ava,” Selene grumbled weakly.
Ava swallowed hard.
“Do I have my pills in this house or not?”
Ava exhaled to calm herself and shook her head.
“I’m sorry, Selene… but… you weren’t needing them anymore, so I feared—”
“Don’t tell me I have none in this house. Like… right now?” Selene snapped.
Ava nodded.
“But I can get some for you in the morning—”
Selene hissed angrily and sprang to her feet, slipping into her heels and storming out, Ava following quickly behind her, guilt written all over her face.
“Where are you going? It’s midnight—”
“I don’t care!”
“Well, can you at least change into something else?” Ava insisted loudly.
Selene ignored her as she scurried down the stairs, her eyes darting around the living room in search of her car keys.
“Why are you in such a hurry, Selene… who did you sleep with?”
Selene said nothing.
Just as her eyes landed on the keys and she lurched forward to grab them, the door swung open, revealing Damien—his features harder than ever, his eyes bloodshot.
Ava gasped and stumbled backward quickly, her eyes settling on the weapon tucked at Damien’s side.
“Ma’am… ma’am… Selene…” Ava stuttered, already shaking, her gaze silently guiding Selene’s to it.
A gun.
