Selene alighted from the car as her heart slammed hard against her chest.
“Miss Selene?” one of the guards positioned at the gates greeted, pressing a slight bow.
Selene forced down a tight swallow and proceeded to ask, “Is Damien home?”
The guard hesitated, like he was contemplating whether to tell her or not.
“Please tell me he's in there…” Selene insisted.
“Yes ma'am,” the guard answered, and Selene bolted past him, fear tightening her stomach as she ran into the house.
“Damien!” she yelled, running her eyes desperately through the vast living room.
“Damien!” she called again, her pulse spiking out of control as fear tightened her spine.
If he wasn't home, then where had he taken her son?
A dry chuckle tore out of her as she dragged her feet across the place—pacing.
He wasn't answering any of her calls, and now he wasn't at home?
“f**k it,” she spat bitterly, hurrying up the stairs as the look on her face shifted from fear to anger.
If he wanted to play with her, then she was going to show him she knew exactly how to play.
“Ma'am…” the maids greeted as she passed, her eyes stretching through the hallway—frantic—for Quinn's room.
“Do you need anything, ma'am?” one of the maids approached her, as if trying to stop her.
Selene shoved her aside.
“Get out of my way!” she snarled, glaring daggers at the confused girl, leaving her no choice but to step aside.
She spotted a pink-themed door, her lips curling between her teeth as she stormed toward it.
No doubt Quinn was in there—and Selene was going to take her. One way or another.
“Okay, Selene…” she heaved, forcing a smile onto her face. If she was going to take the girl somehow, first she had to have the child willing to come with her.
“Quinn…” Selene cooed, placing a quiet knock on the door and pushing it open.
A guard stepped into view, roaming his eyes over Selene as she entered the suite.
“How may I be of help to you?”
“I'm here for—”
“She's here for me,” Damien's voice echoed through the air, drawing Selene's gaze to his figure descending the stairs with a smug smile.
Selene lurched forward before her mind could think, shoving the guard out of the way.
“What do you think you're doing, Damien? How dare you—”
“Mama!” Leo's voice blared happily through the house.
Selene looked up, watching him scurry down the stairs with Quinn chasing him happily.
Her eyes lit up.
“Leo….” she bawled, lowering herself to his level as he ran into her arms.
“I missed you, mama…” he mouthed into her shoulder, a happy smile plastered across his face.
“I had stopped by to check on you when the boy wanted to come with me, so I took him…” Damien said casually.
The smile on Selene's face faded as she broke the hug, Leo wriggling out of her arms and continuing his chase with Quinn.
“What were you thinking, Damien… the boy is unwell and—”
“He doesn't look unwell to me.” Damien shrugged, trailing his eyes to Leo as he played.
Selene looked away, her fingers tightening at her sides.
Damien chuckled as he closed the space between them, his eyes dragging slowly and deliberately across Selene's face.
“I warned you not to start this, Selene… but you started it anyway.”
Selene's eyes whipped to his face.
“Now I'm all in, and you think you get to back out?” he snarled, his hand crawling to Selene's face and forcing her eyes to stay on him.
“I killed a man for you…” he whispered, leaning closer, his face about to nuzzle into her neck—
when the door creaked open.
Marina stepped in, excitement beaming on her face, only to fade as her eyes settled on Selene.
Selene tugged Damien aside, lowering her gaze.
“What is going on here?” Marina asked, her gaze dragging from Damien's guiltless face to Selene's lowered one.
“I'll… I'll take my leave now.” Selene murmured and hastened toward Leo, taking his hand and about to exit the suite when Marina's feet shot into motion, blocking her path.
“I asked a question!” she yelled, already breathless, venom dripping from her voice as her eyes dug daggers into Selene.
“You should ask your husband here, Marina.” Selene answered, meeting Marina's gaze steadily for the first time—fearless and confident.
Marina chuckled.
“Excuse me,” Selene hissed, brushing past her and nearly leaving her staggering out of balance as disbelief flickered across her face.
She lifted her eyes to Damien, then trailed them to a pouting Quinn as Selene exited the suite with her son.
“I think I've had enough,” Marina whispered to herself, pressing a firm nod to it as she dug her fingers into her purse and took out her phone.
Follow her.
She typed and sent it to her assistant, more anger than she had felt in a long time boiling within her as she hurried for the stairs, ignoring Quinn's innocent whimpers for her.
