Selene alighted from the car as her heart slammed hard against her chest. “Miss Selene?” one of the guards positioned at the gates greeted, pressing a slight bow. Selene forced down a tight swallow and proceeded to ask, “Is Damien home?” The guard hesitated, like he was contemplating whether to tell her or not. “Please tell me he's in there…” Selene insisted. “Yes ma'am,” the guard answered, and Selene bolted past him, fear tightening her stomach as she ran into the house. “Damien!” she yelled, running her eyes desperately through the vast living room. “Damien!” she called again, her pulse spiking out of control as fear tightened her spine.
