I, Rachel Conner never expected to find myself kidnapped and chained to the basement in the mansion of one of the most powerful vampires in the city. But here I was. I sat back against the richly red colored wall that was behind me and let my head rest against it as I examined my surroundings for the millionth time. I wasn’t sure how long I had been down here but I knew that daylight had came and gone at least once from watching the few small windows that lined the top of the opposite wall in the basement. I had debated trying to escape through them if I was able to get free but my chains were to tight and to strong and I hadn’t seen anything tall enough that I could push underneath them in order for me to bust the windows and climb out. I sighed, unfortunately at the moment I was most definitely stuck.
I let my gaze travel over the mid century themed basement trying to find a glimpse of an opportunity for escape. Still nothing. I was in what seemed to be a “special room” distinctly used for similar situations such as the one I was in now. I wasn’t sure what to make of it. It wasn’t cold dark and scary. Other than being chained to the wall at the moment the general vibe was comfortable and quiet. It was strange.
The room was a rich red color, fitting for a vampire. The floors were lined with a plush black carpet and the room bared little furniture. Only a queen sized bed on the opposite wall, a small kitchenette sized table to the left of that and a bathroom facility that was partially hidden behind a half wall. Each piece of furniture was very clearly bolted to the floor and a very secured black door was to my right. If my hunch was correct I wasn’t going to easily knock that thing down if I got free either. I hadn’t yet had the opportunity to meet Damien Coldwater in person and plunge a stake through his cold hearted chest but it was on my list of to do’s.
Ever since my parents had been brutally murdered by a supernatural five years ago I had vowed to find their killers and enact my revenge. I’d also tear down any vampire, demon, and shifter that blocked my path. Damien Coldwater was currently blocking my path and had been for a while. He knew of the shifter who had witnessed my mother and father’s demise the fateful night. I had attempted to contact him on cordial grounds at first, hoping he’d find the information insignificant and give it freely. That was not the case. Which I assumed was why I was currently in the predicament. I may have broken into his club a few nights ago and staked a few of his higher ranked buddies in an attempt to get his attention. Clearly it worked, I just hadn’t expected him to be so clever.
I never saw it coming. The women who had put a bag over my head and chloroformed me in the alleyway behind my apartment was someone I had seen many times, had even had a few friendly conversations with. She had lived in the building for years. I had never expected her to snag me when I went to throw my trash out. That’s what I got for not keeping my guard up. Can’t trust anyone.
A sudden rattling like keys came from the door and I heard multiple locks begin to click. My heart quickened and I jerked my head toward the door. My long blonde hair fell to the front of my face and I frivolously tried to brush it away but the cuffs binding my wrists made it difficult. I heard two more locks click before the door began to creak open. I glanced up through the strands of hair over my eyes to find Damien Coldwater striding confidently through the door. There was no mistaking it was him. I was taken aback at first. I had heard the guy was hot. But that was an understatement. He was a walking masterpiece.
At 6’0 he stood proudly in front me, his broad shoulders set back and a smug smirk set of his perfectly carved face. He was tall and muscular but not overly large. His high cheek bones accentuated his square jawline and he had jet black hair that stood out starkly against his unaturally grey eyes. Those eyes bored into me now with what looked like amusement. I swallowed hard and stared back him, determined not to look as nervous as I was but I knew he could hear my heart racing. Damned thing gave me away. He was dressed more casually than I would have pictured with a plain navy blue button shirt and dark jeans. It didn’t take away from his powerful energy though as he inched closer to me.
He squatted down just a few inches in front of me and reached his hand out towards my face. I jerked back instinctively and my head slammed aggressively against the wall behind me causing me to wince. He chuckled but didn’t withdraw his hand and gingerly brushed the hair from my face.
“You must be starved, please have dinner with me.” His voice was damn near angelic when he spoke. The words coming out smooth and caressing over my skin like warm milk. I shuttered. The thick British accent didn’t help. I was a sucker for a british accent. Vampires had a natural allure for humans and if you weren’t careful they could ensnare you within their web with nothing but a wink and a wistful touch. He gestured towards the small kitchenette table.
“ I’ll have my chef bring us something if you will sit with me.”
I pushed away the impermissible tingles going up my spine and scowled at him.
“Sorry, my diet excludes blood and I certainly don’t dine with bloodsucking trash like you.”
I turned my head away from him to further push my point of defiance. His eyebrows rose.
“ Bloodsucking trash?” He asked.
“ You kidnapped me, chained me to a wall in your basement. Blood sucking trash pretty much sums it up.” I stated flatly.
“Well Ms. Rachel Conner you did enter my club, kill three of my best men and proceed to cause ten thousand dollars worth of damage to my bar. I believe that justifies some sort of punishment.” He smiled mischievously at me.
“ All of that which we can discuss if you will please join me for dinner.” His tone was a tad more authoritative this time which caused my heart to piddle paddle faster and a dim sweat to break on my brow.
I contemplated my options for a moment and decided that I indeed was hungry and it wasn’t like I was going to be able to go anywhere regardless if I refused dinner or not. Better to be full and have energy than go hungry and grow weak. I sighed and turned my face to him.
“ Very well Mr.Coldwater. I’ll have dinner with you. However that will be rather hard considering I’m chained to the wall and my wrists and feet are chained.” I lifted my wrists and wiggled them at him dramatically. He nodded and smiled sweetly.
“ Indeed it would.” He fished out a small key from his pocket and I made note of its size and shape as he proceeded to unlock my wrist cuffs. They clanked to the carpet and I rubbed them gently. He did not remove my leg cuffs though and instead lifted a small door open to the left by my head. He inserted the key and I heard a loud click as the chain around my legs slackened. I looked at him questioningly.
“ I can’t have you completely unbound Ms. Conner, please understand it’s is as much for your safety as it is mine. More so yours. The chains around your feet stay but there is enough slack to allow you to move freely to any corner of this room. There is a pulley behind this wall allowing me to control how much freedom you have. I am being generous at the moment but do not test me.”
