Dinner with the enemy

I followed Damien to the small table, my chained feet clanging loudly along the way. I glared murdously at him the entire way across the small room to the table.Even though my body was on edge, my mind knew I needed to play my cards right or I just might end up being the dinner. Of course looking at Damien now I wasn’t sure if minded his lips on my neck. He was delightfully delicious to look at. I shook my head trying to rid myself of the undoubtedly moronic notion that his lips on my neck would result in anything other than me being drained dry. Damien caught the motion and tilted his head curiously. “ Troubling thoughts Ms. Conner?” He asked. “ Nothing any more troubling than being held captive.” I said. He chuckled at my comment as I sat down across from him. Just like that the door opened again and a man dressed in white chefs attire rolled in a cart to us. It was like he knew the minute I sat down. “ How did you know I’d agree to dinner?” I asked Damien “ It’s not like you had much of choice.” He said playfully. I rolled my eyes but sat up straight and rolled my shoulders back defiantly. “ I could just starve.” The minute the words came out of my mouth I wished I could shove them right back in. Damien laughed loudly. “ Yes I suppose you could do that, but I wouldn’t advise it.” He said, laughter still animating his tone. I’m glad he finds this situation amusing. I sure as hell didn’t. The chef rolled the cart to a stop by our side and placed a cup of water and a steak dinner with green beans, mash potatoes and mushrooms on my side. He placed a cup of water along side Damien with the same meal, minus the mushrooms. He stepped away from us but didn’t leave the room. “ No blood?” I asked harshly as I lifted my fork and knife to begin cutting into the tender steak on my plate. It smelled so delicious. I hadn’t eaten since I got here, and I assumed I had been here at least a day before anyone had come to check on me. I eagerly placed a huge piece of meat into my mouth and chewed. Damien began cutting into his steak as well, but not as hastily as I had. “ we do still require nourishment from food. We don’t just sit around drinking blood all day.” He stated before placing a helping of green beans into his mouth. I swallowed my steak and took a huge gulp of water. I knew vampires still needed food, i was just trying to get under his skin. It wasn’t working. Damien watched me intently as I devoured my plate in front of him. I didn’t care what I looked like. I certainly wasn’t trying to impress anyone here. We finished our plates in silence. When the chef removed our plates and exited the room Damien crossed him arms over the table and eyed me in such a way that made my blood rush to parts of my body that had no business getting excited right now. What the hell was wrong with me? “ Let me get straight to the point Ms.Conner. I am currently extremely conflicted about Our predicament.” I tilted my head to the side.what could he possibly be conflicted about? He kidnapped me! “ conflicted how?” I asked. He sighed and ran his hands over his jet black hair, eyes darting nervously about the room for a moment. Wait a second why was he the one nervous? I was the one in chains here. My interest was beginning to be peaked. “ well-“ he began. “ I originally had planned to bring you here and throw you in the cells with the other miscreants that dared to go against me in such a way as you have. But….” He trailed off for a moment as if he wasn’t sure how to finish his sentence. “ But what?” My heart was pounding again now. Was he planning to do something worse? Maybe killing his people was a little too rash on my part. I was just so angry. I wanted to find the bastards that killed my parents and I was only one name away from finding out. A name that Damien knew, but refused to give to me. “ BUT, upon your arrival even in your sleeping state. I knew.” He trailed off again. The anticipation was getting to be too much for me. He was not being straight to the point. “Knew what Mr.Coldwater?” I asked not able to hide the exasperation in my tone. He straightened in his seat and his face contorted uncomfortably. “ You are human so it won’t have the same effect on you as it does me. I’m honestly thankful of that. But also very confused as to how this is even possible.” What was possible? What the hell was this vampire trying to get at. My heart was pounding audibly in my head now and my breaths increase as the pressure on my chest tightened. “ Mr.Coldwater will you please get on with what you are trying to tell me.” He gave me an annoyed glare but it softened when he realized that his procrastination had sent me into a spiraling mess. “Rachel the minute you entered my home I knew you were my mate. The minute I saw your sleeping face I knew there was no denying it.” My mouth dropped. I sat there for a moment, frozen. Was he insane? He must be. There’s no other explanation. “No-no you are most certainly mistaken.” I sputtered out. “ I assure you Rachel I am not mistaken. It isn’t something that you can get wrong. Like I said you are human so it won’t be the same for you. You won’t understand.” I laughed. “ I understand that you have lost your mind! I am no one’s mate! Definitely not yours” I exclaimed. He growled at my statement, anger contorting his beautiful face into something more animalistic. It was frightening. My eyes widened and I clamped my mouth shut while instinctively scooting my chair a few inches back. He stood from his chair and in less than two strides made his way in front of me. He leaned so close I could feel his breath on my lips. I began trembling. Normally a vampire charging me did the opposite. But I was usually armed and chain-less. Right now I was at his mercy and it terrified me. “ You are my mate Rachel Conner. Do not mock me as if I am some i***t that doesn’t know his ass from his elbow! You do not understand what transpires for a vampire when they find their mate because you are not a vampire. You have to understand how difficult this is for me, to be mated to a human. It’s- it’s unheard of in our society.” His anger faded and he suddenly stepped back away from me when he realized he had come so close to me. He crossed his arms behind his back and bowed his head slightly. “ my apologies Ms. Connor. It is not my intention to scare you. I am just—-“ he trailed off again. “ conflicted”. I said, repeating his words back to him. He nodded. I open and closed my mouth a few times trying to find the right words. I didn’t believe it. I couldn’t believe it. There was no way it was true! He was playing some kind of game with me. “ I don’t believe it.” Was all I managed to get out. It was barely an audible whisper but I knew he heard it. “ Perhaps I should leave you be to let you process this information. I still haven’t fully wrapped my head around it either. I have left fresh clothes for you in the bathroom area and there are a few books I thought you might like on the bed. Have a good night Ms.Conner.” With that he exited the room and locked the door back.
