The mansion became silent after Edward was taken away.
Amelia sat beside Damian in his study.
“The contract,” she whispered.
Damian opened the drawer where he had kept the original copy.
They had torn up the first version, but Damian had made a scanned copy before destroying it.
He opened the file on his computer.
They read every page carefully.
Then Amelia noticed something.
“Damian, stop.”
He looked at her.
“What?”
She pointed at a paragraph near the end.
“What does that mean?”
Damian read it twice.
His expression changed.
The clause stated that if Damian entered a legal marriage under specific circumstances, control of certain family assets could temporarily pass to a designated trustee.
Amelia's eyes widened.
“Who is the trustee?”
Damian scrolled down.
A name appeared.
Richard Harrison.
Amelia stood.
“But Harrison is in prison.”
“That's why he wanted the marriage.”
“He planned all of this?”
“Maybe.”
Damian continued reading.
There was another condition.
If the marriage ended before one year, the trustee could claim control of the assets.
Amelia stared at him.
“So if we divorce…”
“Harrison gets everything.”
“And if we stay married?”
“The assets remain protected.”
Amelia slowly sat down.
“Our marriage was never just a business arrangement.”
“No.”
Someone had designed the contract to control Damian's fortune.
Damian looked at Amelia.
“I'm sorry.”
“For what?”
“For putting you in danger.”
She took his hand.
“You didn't know.”
“I should have.”
She smiled gently.
“Then we'll fix it together.”
Damian looked at her.
Together.
That word had become more important than anything else.
