Chapter 26 — The Promise

273 Words
After escaping the underground room, Damian refused to let Amelia out of his sight. They returned to the mansion. Amelia sat quietly beside him. “You're angry.” “Yes.” “At Marcus?” “At myself.” “Why?” “I should have protected you better.” “You did protect me.” “I almost lost you.” Amelia placed her hand over his. “You didn't.” Damian looked at her. “I can't imagine my life without you anymore.” Her eyes softened. “Then don't.” He leaned closer. For a moment, everything else disappeared. The contract. The secrets. The danger. Only the two of them remained. Damian gently kissed her forehead. “I love you.” Amelia's eyes filled with tears. She smiled. “I love you too.” It was the first time they had said it. No contract required. No pretending. Just the truth. Then Damian's phone rang. He answered. “What?” The investigator's voice sounded urgent. “Sir, Marcus has been found.” Damian stood. “Where?” “At the airport.” “Send the location.” He ended the call. Amelia stood. “We're going.” Damian looked at her. “No.” She frowned. “You said you wouldn't leave me behind.” “I won't.” “Then I'm coming.” He sighed. “Fine.” They rushed to the airport. But Marcus had already disappeared. On the seat where he had been sitting was an envelope. Inside was a photograph of Amelia. On the back: Congratulations on finding love. Now let's see how long it lasts.
