The key opened a room beneath Damian's father's old house.
Damian and Amelia entered carefully.
Dust covered everything.
An old desk stood against the wall.
Damian searched the drawers.
Nothing.
Then Amelia noticed a painting.
“Damian.”
“What?”
“This painting is crooked.”
He moved it.
Behind it was a safe.
The silver key opened it.
Inside was a letter.
Damian unfolded it.
His father's handwriting filled the page.
If you're reading this, Victor has returned.
Damian's breathing became heavy.
He continued reading.
The person who betrayed us was not Victor.
Amelia looked at him.
“Then who?”
Damian read the final line.
Trust the woman who carries the Carter name.
They stared at each other.
“What does that mean?” Amelia whispered.
Damian shook his head.
“I don't know.”
Suddenly, they heard footsteps outside.
Someone was coming.
Damian grabbed Amelia's hand.
“Behind me.”
The door opened.
A man stepped into the room.
Damian froze.
“Victor.”
The older man smiled.
“You've grown into your father's son.”
Amelia stepped closer to Damian.
Victor looked at her.
“And you must be Amelia.”
“How do you know me?”
“Because your father ruined my life.”
Damian stepped forward.
“Enough.”
Victor laughed.
“You still don't understand.”
“Then explain.”
Victor's smile disappeared.
“Your fathers weren't innocent.”
He threw another document onto the desk.
“This is the truth.”
Damian picked it up.
His eyes widened.
Amelia looked at him.
“What is it?”
Damian couldn't speak.
Victor whispered,
“Ask your father who your real enemy is.”
Then he disappeared through a hidden door.
Amelia stared at Damian.
“What did you see?”
He slowly looked at her.
“A name.”
“Whose?”
Damian's voice was barely a whisper.
“Your mother's.”
