The possibility that Amelia's mother was alive changed everything.
Damian used every resource he had.
Private investigators searched old records.
Security experts examined travel documents.
Bank accounts were traced.
But there was no sign of her.
Amelia refused to give up.
One night, she sat in Damian's study surrounded by documents.
“I know she's out there.”
Damian placed a cup of tea beside her.
“We'll find her.”
“How can you be so sure?”
“Because I promised you.”
Amelia looked up.
“You promise too much.”
“I intend to keep every promise.”
She smiled.
Then an investigator entered.
“Mr. Cross, we found something.”
Damian stood.
“What?”
“A bank account was opened twenty years ago under another name.”
“Whose?”
The investigator handed him a file.
“Maria Blake.”
Amelia stared at the photograph attached to the file.
She knew that face.
It was her mother.
Her hands began shaking.
“Where is she?”
“The account was last used six months ago.”
“Where?”
“Switzerland.”
Damian immediately picked up his phone.
“Prepare the jet.”
Amelia stood.
“I'm coming.”
“I know.”
For the first time in years, Amelia felt hope.
Her mother was alive.
And she was closer than they had ever imagined.
But before they could leave, another message arrived.
If you go looking for Maria, Damian will die.
Amelia's blood ran cold.
She showed Damian.
He read the message.
Then he looked at her.
“We're still going.”
“Damian—”
“I won't let anyone use fear to control us.”
He took her hand.
“We go together.”
And together, they boarded the plane.
