That evening, Damian came home later than usual.
Amelia was sitting on the balcony when he found her.
“You're still awake.”
“I was waiting.”
“For me?”
She looked away.
“Don't get excited.”
He smiled.
“I won't.”
Damian sat beside her.
For several minutes, they watched the city lights.
Then Amelia asked,
“Do you ever get tired of being alone?”
He looked at her.
“Sometimes.”
“Why don't you let people get close?”
“People who get close can hurt you.”
Amelia understood.
“My father used to say the same thing.”
Damian smiled faintly.
“Your father sounds like a wise man.”
“He is.”
Silence returned.
Then Damian said,
“I owe you an apology.”
“For what?”
“For bringing you into this.”
“You didn't force me.”
“I could have found another way.”
“But you didn't.”
“No.”
Amelia looked at him.
“Do you regret marrying me?”
Damian didn't answer immediately.
“No.”
Her heart beat faster.
“Why?”
“Because you're stronger than I expected.”
She smiled.
“That's almost a compliment.”
“It is.”
They both laughed.
For one night, there were no rules.
No contract.
No business.
No family secrets.
Just Amelia and Damian.
Later, they stood together in the kitchen making coffee.
Amelia accidentally spilled some on his shirt.
“Oh my goodness!”
Damian looked down.
“You did that on purpose.”
“I did not!”
“You're dangerous.”
“You're dramatic.”
He laughed.
Amelia stared at him.
She had never seen him laugh like that.
“You look different when you smile.”
Damian looked at her.
“So do you.”
Their eyes met.
The moment became strangely quiet.
He stepped closer.
Amelia didn't move.
Then his phone rang.
The moment disappeared.
Damian answered.
His smile vanished.
“What happened?”
He listened.
Then he looked at Amelia.
“Your father has been found.”
Amelia's heart jumped.
“Is he okay?”
Damian lowered the phone.
“We need to go.”
“Why?”
“He's in the hospital.”
Her face went pale.
“And the police say someone tried to kill him.”
