Chapter 8 — The Hospital

384 Words
Amelia rushed into the hospital with Damian beside her. “Where is my father?” “Room 214,” the nurse said. Amelia ran down the hallway. Her father was lying in bed. His face was pale, but he was conscious. “Dad!” He opened his eyes. “Amelia.” She grabbed his hand. “I'm here.” His eyes moved toward Damian. “You married him.” Amelia looked at Damian. “Yes.” Her father closed his eyes. “I was afraid this would happen.” “What happened to you?” He looked around the room. “Not here.” Damian stepped closer. “Mr. Carter, who attacked you?” Her father stared at him. “Your uncle.” Damian became still. “Victor?” Her father nodded. “He wants something.” “What?” “An old account.” Damian frowned. “What account?” Her father struggled to breathe. “Twenty years ago, your father and I discovered that someone was stealing money from both companies.” “Who?” Amelia asked. “We never found out.” “Then why does Victor blame our families?” “Because he believed we betrayed him.” Damian looked at Amelia. Her father continued. “There was a ledger.” “What ledger?” Damian asked. “The Black Ledger.” Damian's expression changed. “What?” “It contains every payment and secret transaction from that time.” “Where is it?” Her father looked at Amelia. “I gave it to your mother.” Amelia froze. “My mother?” “She hid it before she died.” “Where?” Her father whispered, “In the house where you grew up.” Amelia's heart raced. “Dad, what house?” But before he could answer, the hospital lights went out. Amelia screamed. Damian immediately pulled her behind him. The door opened. A shadow moved through the darkness. Then the emergency lights came on. Nobody was there. But on the floor was a black envelope. Damian picked it up. Inside was a single message. You have three days to find the ledger. Amelia looked at Damian. “What happens after three days?” Damian's eyes hardened. “I don't think we want to find out.”
