Jonathan Vale invited Damian to a private restaurant.
Damian arrived alone.
Vale stood when he entered.
“Mr. Cross.”
“Mr. Vale.”
They shook hands.
“I've heard a lot about you.”
“Most of it probably isn't true.”
Vale smiled.
“Perhaps.”
They sat.
Vale ordered coffee.
“I want to offer you a partnership.”
“I don't need one.”
“You haven't heard the offer.”
“I know enough.”
Vale laughed.
“You're confident.”
“I know my business.”
Vale leaned forward.
“I can make your company stronger.”
“Why?”
“Because your enemies are growing.”
Damian studied him.
“You're one of them.”
Vale smiled.
“Maybe.”
“What do you want?”
“Your trust.”
“You won't get it.”
Vale sighed.
“Then perhaps your wife will change your mind.”
Damian's expression immediately hardened.
“Leave Amelia out of this.”
Vale smiled.
“That's exactly why she's useful.”
Damian stood.
“You're making a mistake.”
Vale remained calm.
“Everyone who has stood against The Circle has made the same mistake.”
Damian walked away.
Outside, he called Amelia.
“Are you okay?”
“Yes.”
“Where are you?”
“At the foundation.”
“Stay there until I arrive.”
“Damian, what happened?”
“I'll explain when I get there.”
He ended the call.
For the first time, Amelia understood.
Jonathan Vale wasn't interested in the company.
He was interested in Damian's weakness.
And that weakness was her.
