Chapter 4 — The Man Who Returned

412 Words
Damian refused to explain anything during the drive back to the mansion. Amelia sat beside him, staring out the window. “You said someone you thought was dead has returned.” “Yes.” “Who?” “His name is Victor Cross.” Amelia turned toward him. “Cross?” “My father's younger brother.” She frowned. “I didn't know your father had a brother.” “Most people don't.” “Why?” “Because he disappeared twenty years ago.” “Did he die?” “We believed he did.” Amelia looked at the black envelope in her hands. “Why would he threaten me?” Damian's jaw tightened. “He may not be threatening you.” “Then who is he threatening?” “Me.” When they arrived home, Damian immediately ordered the security team to increase protection around the mansion. Amelia watched him. “You're scared.” Damian looked at her. “No.” “You are.” “I don't scare easily.” “Then why all the security?” “Because I don't take chances with your safety.” She wasn't expecting that answer. Her heart skipped. “Why do you care about my safety?” Damian paused. “Because you're my wife.” “Contract wife.” His eyes met hers. “Still my wife.” He walked away. That night, Amelia couldn't sleep. She went downstairs for water. As she entered the kitchen, she heard a noise. She froze. Someone was standing outside the glass doors. A man. Amelia stepped backward. The lights suddenly went out. She screamed. Before she could move, strong arms pulled her away from the doors. “Amelia!” Damian. He held her tightly. “Stay behind me.” The security lights came on. The man outside was gone. Damian immediately called security. Amelia's hands were shaking. “Who was that?” “I don't know.” “I saw him.” “So did I.” Then Damian noticed something on the floor. A photograph. He picked it up. It showed Damian as a child standing beside his father and another young man. Victor Cross. Written on the back were the words: Your family destroyed mine. Now I will destroy yours. Damian's face hardened. Amelia looked at him. “What does this mean?” Damian didn't answer. But she knew one thing. Their marriage had become much more dangerous than either of them expected.
