Chapter 5 — The First Lie

510 Words
The next morning, Amelia found Damian in his study. He was standing behind his desk, holding an old photograph. “Why didn't you tell me everything about Victor?” Damian looked up. “Because it wasn't necessary.” “It is now.” He sighed. “My father and Victor fought over the company.” “And?” “Victor accused my father of stealing money from him.” “Did he?” “I don't know.” Amelia stared at him. “You don't know?” “I was sixteen when Victor disappeared.” She stepped closer. “What happened to my father's company?” Damian's expression changed. “What do you mean?” “My father said someone inside Carter & Co. betrayed us.” Damian remained silent. “Damian.” He finally said, “Your father once worked with my father.” Amelia's eyes widened. “What?” “They were business partners.” “My father never told me.” “I know.” “Why?” “I don't know.” She looked at him carefully. “You're hiding something.” Damian walked toward the window. “There are things from twenty years ago that were never explained.” “Then let's find the truth.” “No.” “Why?” “Because whoever is behind this wants you involved.” “And I'm already involved.” He turned toward her. “You don't understand.” “Then make me understand.” Damian stared at her. For a moment, his cold expression disappeared. “I don't want you hurt.” Amelia's heart softened. “Then stop shutting me out.” He didn't answer. Later that afternoon, Amelia discovered an old box hidden inside her father's study. Inside was a photograph. Her father. Damian's father. And Victor Cross. But there was something else. A document. Amelia opened it. Her eyes widened. It was a business agreement between Carter & Co. and Cross Enterprises. The date was twenty years ago. At the bottom were three signatures. Her father's. Damian's father's. And Victor Cross's. Amelia whispered, “They knew each other.” Suddenly, she heard footsteps behind her. She turned. Damian stood in the doorway. His eyes went directly to the document in her hands. “Where did you find that?” “In my father's study.” He walked toward her. “You shouldn't have opened that box.” “Why?” “Because now you know too much.” Amelia held the document tightly. “Then tell me the truth.” Damian looked at her. “The truth is…” He stopped. His phone rang. He answered. His face changed. “What happened?” A voice replied. Damian's eyes moved toward Amelia. Then he said, “Don't let anyone leave the building.” He ended the call. “What is it?” Amelia asked. Damian's voice was low. “Someone has broken into Cross Enterprises.” “And what did they steal?” Damian stared at the document. “Something connected to your father.”
