Chapter 22 The right-of-way formed a casual passage bounded by Macquarie and Phillip Streets through a slab of vacant land between the Treasury and the Water Police Courts. Shanty huts huddled together along its length, an extension of outhouses that serviced the courts and police station. Sheets of iron were nailed over wooden frames that stored anything from spare hoses for the fire station at the Phillip Street end to extra bonded storage. Outhouse Lane was dark and dismal even as the sun spread across the harbour and into the city. Mr Michaels and Clancy Dickens waited in the stables.
