Chapter 1

1565 Words
Corrine The sky was dark with nothing but the moon to shed some light on the cold winter night. Two little girls, no older than four, huddled together for warmth. One girl sat taller with her cheek pressed to the top of the others head. Hair as black as the night tangled with strands of silver as they held each other tight. The raven haired girl lifted her head as a pair of violet eyes looked up at her. "Please sing it again, just one more time." She begged. She leaned her head back against the cold metal bars that surrounded them as she sighed. "Okay sis-in. But only if you sing with me." "Deal!" The violet eyed girl shouted and jumped in her seat. "Shhhh! Not so loud!" The other reprimanded at her not so quiet excitement. Her own pair of violets darted across the expanse of the rickety train car, as if the moon rays poking through the holes in the roof were enough to see if anyone had woken up. "Sorry." The other squeaked quietly. She hooked her elbow back into the others and curled back into her side until they were close enough that no one could hear their exchanged whispers. "Come stop your crying It will be alright Just take my hand And hold it tight" "I will protect you From all around you I will be here Don't you cry" "For one so small You seem so strong My arms will hold you, Keep you safe and warm" "This bond between us Can't be broken I will be here Don't you cry" "Cause you'll be here in my arms Yes, you'll be here in my arms From this day on Now and forever more You'll be in my heart No matter what they say You'll always be here in my heart Always" "Why can't they understand the way we feel They just don't trust what they can't explain I know we're different but deep inside us We're not that different at all-" I found myself waking up to the sound of a tune being hummed. And then I found the one humming was me to the tune of the song from my dreams. I rolled over and slowly opened my eyes to be greeted by the spit and crackle of the dying fire. Now awake, I got up as quietly as I could and sat next to the fire. Picking up the discarded stick from last night, I poked at the last of the embers trying to rejuvenate the flame. It was very very early in the morning and the sun was yet to make it through the trees to light up our little camp site. "What are you thinking about?" I nearly jumped out of my skin- killing the last of the fire as I stabbed it in the process-not having realized Sesshomaru was awake too. He chuckled quietly and took a seat next to me, watching me watch the smoke wafting into the air. "Oh, nothing." I replied softly. Sesshomaru was close enough for me to relax into his side. He wrapped his arm around my back as I leaned against him. "You don't just wake up this early unless something's on your mind." He pointed out, not believing my 'oh, nothing'. "It's just...it's just hard to describe...I'm almost not even sure what it is." I sighed. I stabbed another ember in aggravation. "Try it anyway. It's still early, we've got time." I leaned away just enough to give him an aggravated raised brow before returning to his side with a sigh. I was quiet for a moment, trying to figure out how I wanted to describe it. "Remember the Inuyasha fiasco-" "Which one?" Sesshomaru was quick to add his two scents which made me chuckle. "-the first time I was pregnant," I said with a laugh, "when we had forgotten each other...well, when I was in that mind set-even though I had forgotten I was still dreaming my memories. And even though they were just meant to be dreams, there was something about them that made me feel like there was more to them. And I just had another dream-" "From when we had forgotten?" "No, not from then specifically. I don't know what it was supposed to be, but it did feel like those others. Like it wasn't just a dream." "Well, what was the dream about?" He asked. "It was these two little girls-sisters, I think. It was late in the night and they were holding each other and singing...I know it sounds silly saying it aloud to be reading so much about a dream like that." "I wouldn't say that. But maybe it is a memory-of the girls when they were little." He suggested, trying to help define it. "It couldn't have been Yuki and Ume. One of the girls had black hair." I responded "Were these girls same age?...like twins" he asked "I think so." I answered, trying to recall how much of their faces I could see. "Were they singing a song from one of your 'movies'?" He asked. His tone sounded like he was going somewhere with these questions and he was getting me curious. I nodded my head 'yes' against his shoulder. "It's still possible. Just because you don't have a little girl with black hair now doesn't mean you couldn't." I leaned back from him again, this time failing to suppress my cheesy smile as I watched him talk. It was cute watching him maintain his serious demeanor when inside he was a big softie for babies... correction-this is Sesshomaru we're talking about-he's a big softie for his babies. "Maybe it doesn't feel like just a dream because you want those little girls to be reality. Twin girls singing 'disney' songs-who else's could they be?" He finally turned away from the smoke of the dead fire and glanced down at me as he made his deduction. I couldn't help but reward how cute he seemed in this moment. Still leaning on him, I straightened up a bit and caught his lips in one of the best good morning kisses. I moved to pull back, but Sesshomaru caught the back of my neck holding me close to him, our foreheads pressed together. "And of course I'd do anything necessary to make my mate's dreams come true." He immediately pulled me back in for another kiss, conveying the passion of his words through his lips. "I'm awake! Please for the love of God-I'm awake!" The moment gone and interrupted, I pulled back from Sesshomaru and looked over my shoulder. I had to turn back away, trying not to laugh at the disgruntled look on Alucard's face. I guess our talking had woken him up and it reached a point where he couldn't ignore it and attempt to fall back asleep for fear things might turn south for him. Now 'awake', Alucard got up and started busying himself gathering anything we had laid out for the night and packing it back up on Ah-Un. "Oh, calm down. We would never do anything like that while you're right there. You're safe." I said to him while trying to get up and help pack up. Sesshomaru tightened his squeeze on my waist for a moment, stopping me. "We wouldn't?" He asked like I was the only one that could hear. I heard Alucard make a grossed out noise in the distance, and unfortunately I couldn't help but laugh a little again. "Well, I wouldn't-" I laughed, "-and you need me for that, ergo we wouldn't." Sesshomaru finally loosened his grip and I hopped up from the ground. Alucard was readjusting the straps on Ah-Un's side and I joined on the other side checking those. "No offense, but why does Mom have to come along this trip?" He asked, obviously still a bit grumpy about his early morning wake up. About five years ago, the villages along the border of the Southern Lands and the Western Lands started arguing. Whatever started it, we never knew. By the time it had reached Sesshomaru it was an old memory that no one could recall, but it had gone unsettled long enough that the arguing had turned into fighting and the fighting had started a feud between Lord Sesshomaru of the West and Lord Nevine* of the South. We were growing tired of the conflict and it seems Lord Nevine thought the same and last week had message sent to our home requesting our presence for a proposition he had to offer to try and settle this. And he had requested to discuss the matter in person with the Lord, Lady and eldest son. "Your mother or not, she is still the Lady of the West and these are matters regarding our lands." Sesshomaru answered in his matter of fact tone. I snickered quietly to myself at his answer and how he left out the fact that my presence was requested. I think he just wanted to give Alucard a hard time back for his outburst...we're still working on his jokes... Alucard nodded his head and carried on packing up, understanding that was Sesshomaru's 'end of topic' tone. Knowing we were only a few hours from finally arriving at the Lord of the South's home, we changed to a more formal attire then left for our destination.
