The police asked me all the questions they could and at first I didn't want to say anything. But I finally said the one name that was heavy on my lips “Jackson.”
“Jackson? What about Jackson?” Sheriff Marcus asked.
“He… He was one of them.” my heart was beating faster as I tried to remember the horror incident of three days ago.
“One of them? One of who?” The sheriff was more interested than ever.
“He was among the pack of werewolves that attacked me!”
And that's when their curiosity faded, getting replaced by laughter. “Oh my God!” Sheriff said and everyone in the room bursted into laughter.
“Why are y'all laughing?” I felt kinda annoyed because this was serious to me. Why the hell were they suddenly laughing?
“There are no wolves in Calton Hills” Sheriff finally said. “Listen to me dear, I've been the sheriff of Calton for many years and there's never been any case of wolves. And besides werewolves don't exist, it's just a fairytale stuff.”
And that's when I knew I was seriously screwed because “how the hell am I supposed to convince these people to believe me?” I wondered.
I looked up at my mom “mom I know what I saw, they pursued us, the wolves, the werewolves, they… They killed vikkie, they killed my best firend Vikkie.”
“Hey honey I think you need to rest your head, you had a terrible fall.” The doctor said trying to aid me to lay on my back. They thought I was crazy.
“You say there's no werewolves in Calton Hills, well I'm telling you that I was attacked by a pack of wolves and they killed my friend, one of them probably bit me. You can't even tell the kinda animal that bit me and I'm telling you it was a werewolf.”
******
It was already two days after coming back home from the hospital and I resumed school fully, “Look at her, the crazy b***h who kept talking about werewolves in the hospital.” I heard two girls gossiping about me from a distance. Normally, I wasn't supposed to hear them, the distance was way beyond human ears.
“She thinks she's living in some kinda novel, talking about Alphas and s**t ha ha.” Another voice came to my ear.
“Isn't she the same girl who's always failing classes? She joined the basketball team but failed ha ha.” They laughed harder “She joined the cheerleaders but failed again and now she's bringing up some fairytale s**t into the real world. Man f**k this bitch.”
Did they really hate me that much? Well I didn't care, all I wanted to know is what exactly was happening to me. So I went to meet Jackson.
“Hey I need to talk to you.” I said immediately I saw him.
“I don't have time to talk.” He didn't even look at me.
“I know you bit me!”
“What the hell did you say?” His forehead squeezed and I could tell he wasn't ready to admit anything I would say.
“Back in the woods, that night, I know you bite me. You're one of them.”
“I don't know what you're talking about.” He picked up his backpack and tried to leave.
“You're not going anywhere till you answer my questions.” I held his right hand and pulled him back.
“Are you crazy?” He turned towards me and I was taken aback seeing the color of his eyes all changed to gold, his voice got deeper almost like a beast.
“Oh my God! I'm sorry, I'm so… So Sorry.” I shifted back and staggered to the ground out of fear. “s**t!” I was stupid to have stood up to him like that.
Just when I concluded my plan of approach had failed, I heard him say “Take my hand.”
I looked up and I saw him stretching a hand down to me, it was strange but for some reason, I found it very cute. “Thank you.” I said after he lifted me up, We stood face to face for a few seconds and I didn't know what to say anymore, and that's when I realized this dude is even more handsome than I thought. It felt crazy because I was in the middle of some chaos and here I was noticing how charming a guy was, a guy who's obviously a scary beast from the inside. “I'm sorry.” I said again to break the silence.
“It's alright.” He said then stretched his hand to pick a dry leave in my hair. “Thanks.” I said again trying to avoid eye contact, the eyes weren't wolfy-gold anymore, they were charming, and most interestingly, they were innocent. For the first time I felt like I could talk to him without fear.
“I'm sorry for accusing you of biting me. But I.. I uhm… I really need your help.” I started.
“Help with what?”
“You and your pack pursued us in the woods the other night, yes I don't remember you hurting me but there's alot of complications.”
“What complications?” He didn't seem to say much.
“Back in the woods, you took my inhaler and y'all left me, to uhm.. die. But for some reason, I woke up in the hospital and my inhaler was beside me. So I connected the dots and it links to you. If my inhaler was suddenly back on my hospital table, it means you brought it back to me.”
“Nice work connecting dots.”
“Please tell me exactly what happened please!” I pleaded desperately because I wanted to know what was going on with me, “why am I suddenly hearing voices from miles away? Why do I feel super fast sometimes and it looks like everything else is moving in slow motion? I looked in the mirror sometimes and my eyes color changes.”
“Your eye colour changes to what?”
“Blue!”
“It's true!”
“What's true?” I asked quickly
“You were truly bitten. But it wasn't by me.”
“Then who? Please help me. I know you brought back that inhaler to me, I know it's you who brought it back to me at the hospital but I don't even know how I ended up at the hospital. Please tell me what you know.”
Jackson looked at me as though he'd just felt pity, then he said “If you really wanna know the truth about everything, ask your mother.”
