The will and the Clause

Chapter 4: The Will and the Clause The low hum of the hospital’s central heating system created a quiet undercurrent as Eleanor Wade carefully unlatched her leather briefcase and placed it on the coffee table at the center of the waiting room. The siblings, now seated in a cautious, uneven semi-circle, watched her with a mix of anticipation and dread. Evelyn Cole sat silently near the window, her gaze distant as the sunlight dimmed into late afternoon. Eleanor, poised as ever, removed a thick envelope sealed with red wax. She held it up for everyone to see. “This document,” she said in her crisp, unwavering tone, “contains the final will and testament of Mr. Raymond Cole, drafted and notarized just weeks ago.” She broke the seal with a letter opener and unfolded the first page. “I will begin with a clause that precedes any distribution of assets. It is, in effect, a preliminary declaration—what your father called a ‘test of respect.’” Angela narrowed her eyes. David leaned forward, eyes gleaming. Chloe crossed her arms. Luke sat still, lips slightly parted. Eleanor cleared her throat and read: “To my children: Before you listen for gain, you must listen for truth. I have watched you all, through seasons of growth and decay. I leave behind a legacy, but not only in the form of property or wealth. If any among you should express disrespect for the deceased within the hours following this message—or demonstrate conduct unbefitting of this family's name—you forfeit your portion of the inheritance.” A pause followed. Heavy. Charged. Angela shifted in her seat. “That sounds... manipulative.” Chloe smirked. “Sounds like him.” David’s brows furrowed. “Wait—what exactly qualifies as ‘unbefitting conduct’?” “Expressions of greed, contempt, mockery,” Eleanor said. “Disrespect in any form. It is intentionally vague. Your father wanted sincerity, not semantics.” Luke tilted his head. “How would he even know?” Eleanor looked directly at him. “He trusted that the truth would reveal itself. In word. In action.” Conversations: Greed, Jealousy, and Blame The room quickly descended into a storm of half-muttered accusations. David snapped first. “So basically, he wanted to bribe us into behaving like saints. Even in death, the man is playing puppet master.” Angela raised an eyebrow. “Perhaps if you weren’t always looking for a handout, David, you wouldn’t be so offended.” His eyes flared. “Handout? Are you really going there, Angela? You’ve leeched off his name your whole life. You think marrying into money counts as accomplishment?” Michael, sitting in the corner, opened his mouth to defend his wife but thought better of it. Angela stood. “I worked for everything I have.” Chloe snorted. “Worked hard at PR campaigns and fundraisers. Let’s not pretend your ‘hard work’ doesn’t come with a chauffeur and a trust fund.” David pointed at Chloe. “And what about you? Miss Independent. Too good to return his calls, too busy to attend his birthdays. You made your peace by disappearing.” Chloe’s eyes flashed. “I disappeared because he made it impossible to stay. The man weaponized guilt like it was an art form.” Luke tried to intervene. “Stop. All of you.” Angela turned on him. “Don’t start with your bleeding heart, Luke. You ran to paint in Prague instead of showing up when Mom got sick.” Luke flinched. “I was there when she died. You all came after.” Evelyn’s hand clenched in her lap. Evelyn’s Conflict Watching her children tear each other apart gutted Evelyn. She had thought perhaps this strange experiment would foster reflection. Maybe even healing. But instead, it had opened a floodgate of years’ worth of venom. She closed her eyes briefly, remembering a time when they were small and innocent, when Raymond read to them after dinner, before ambition had hardened him. Now, Evelyn wasn’t sure if this was justice—or just cruelty dressed in legacy. Flashbacks: Betrayal and Disappointment Eleanor turned a page. “Mr. Cole also left behind supplemental notes for each child. I’ve been authorized to share them if appropriate. But first... flashbacks accompany his reflections.” Angela - Age 27 She had just launched her fashion label, backed by her father’s capital. The first quarterly report showed mismanagement—Angela had funneled a large portion into marketing stunts and designer office space. Raymond summoned her. “You’re playing at business, Angela,” he said. “You care more about the image than the outcome.” She replied sharply, “I’m building a brand, not a spreadsheet.” His response was cold. “Brands fade. Math doesn’t.” That day, he revoked his support. She didn’t speak to him for two years. David - Age 33 Raymond had bailed David out of a failed nightclub venture. Twice. The third time, David came asking for a ‘small’ loan. Raymond was sitting by the fire with a scotch. “You don’t need capital,” Raymond said. “You need to face consequences.” David stormed out, shouting that his father never believed in him. Raymond muttered, “Belief is earned.” Chloe - Age 24 She had written an op-ed in a prominent magazine about toxic families. She never named Raymond—but the allusions were clear. The night it published, Raymond sent a single message: I see you’re brave in print. Cowardly in person. She never replied. Luke - Age 19 Luke had dropped out of business school to attend an art institute in Florence. Raymond flew there unannounced. They met in a courtyard café. Raymond placed a check on the table. “You can cash this and return to school. Or tear it up and become what you believe you are.” Luke tore the check in half. Raymond said nothing. He stood and walked away. Return to Present The siblings were silent now. Ashamed. Angry. Lost. Eleanor closed the will for a moment. “These aren’t just memories,” she said. “They’re reflections. Your father recorded these notes with the hope that you would recognize yourselves in them.” Luke whispered, “Did he hate us?” Evelyn finally spoke. “No. He feared what you were becoming.” Angela’s eyes filled with tears she wouldn’t let fall. David slumped back. Chloe exhaled, then said, “He always had to be right.” Luke asked, “What happens now?” Eleanor opened the next page. “We begin the will. And with it... the consequences.” End of Chapter 4
