Emma Carter stared at herself in the mirror for the fifth time.
She changed her earrings.
Then changed them back.
She adjusted her hair.
Then touched it again.
Finally, she stepped away from the mirror and sighed.
“What am I doing?”
She wasn't getting married.
She wasn't attending an important business meeting.
She was simply going to dinner with a man she had met less than twenty-four hours ago.
A man she barely knew.
A man who had somehow managed to occupy her thoughts since yesterday.
Her phone buzzed on the bed.
She picked it up.
Ryan: I'm outside.
Emma's eyes widened.
“Already?”
She grabbed her purse and hurried downstairs.
When she stepped outside her apartment building, she saw Ryan standing beside a dark blue sedan.
He was wearing a black jacket over a white shirt.
Emma stopped for a moment.
Ryan smiled when he saw her.
“You look beautiful.”
Emma immediately felt her cheeks warm.
“Thank you.”
He opened the passenger door.
“Ready?”
“As ready as I'll ever be.”
Ryan laughed.
“That's not very convincing.”
Emma got into the car.
“I'm nervous.”
“Why?”
“Because I don't usually go on dates.”
Ryan started the car.
“Neither do I.”
She looked at him.
“Really?”
“Really.”
“I don't believe you.”
“Why?”
“You seem too confident.”
Ryan smiled.
“Confidence and experience aren't the same thing.”
Emma laughed.
For the first few minutes, neither of them spoke much.
Emma watched the city lights pass through the window.
She could feel her nervousness slowly disappearing.
Ryan eventually broke the silence.
“I have a question.”
“Go ahead.”
“What do you actually want?”
Emma frowned.
“From what?”
“Life.”
She thought about it.
It was such a simple question, but somehow she had never been asked it that directly.
“I want peace,” she finally said.
Ryan glanced at her.
“Peace?”
“Yes. A good career. A home that feels like mine. People around me who genuinely care about me.”
She paused.
“And maybe love.”
“Maybe?”
Emma smiled.
“I'm still deciding.”
Ryan laughed.
“What about you?”
“I want to build something that belongs to me.”
“A company?”
“More than that.”
He looked ahead.
“My family already has everything. Money, businesses, property, connections.”
Emma turned toward him.
“Then why start your own company?”
“Because I don't want to spend my life being known as my father's son.”
She smiled.
“I understand that.”
Ryan looked at her.
“What about your family?”
Emma's smile faded slightly.
“My parents live in Ohio. We're close, but I don't see them as much as I'd like.”
“Any siblings?”
“No. It's just me.”
“That must have been lonely.”
“Sometimes.”
Ryan nodded.
“I have a younger sister.”
“What's her name?”
“Chloe.”
“Are you close?”
“Very.”
Emma smiled.
“I'd like to meet her someday.”
Ryan glanced at her.
“Someday?”
Emma realized what she had said.
“I mean…”
Ryan laughed.
“You're already planning to meet my family?”
“No!”
She covered her face.
Ryan laughed harder.
“I was joking.”
“You're annoying.”
“And you're adorable when you're embarrassed.”
Emma looked out the window so he wouldn't see her smile.
After about twenty minutes, they arrived at a quiet restaurant overlooking the river.
Emma looked around.
“This place is beautiful.”
“I thought you'd like it.”
They were shown to a table near the window.
The evening was peaceful.
They talked for hours.
Emma told him about her writing.
Ryan told her about his company.
They discovered that they both loved old movies and hated overly crowded places.
At some point, Ryan asked her a question that made her pause.
“What's something people don't know about you?”
Emma smiled nervously.
“That I'm scared of being abandoned.”
Ryan's expression softened.
“Why?”
She looked down at her hands.
“Because I've watched people promise to stay and then leave.”
Ryan didn't interrupt.
“My last relationship ended badly,” she continued. “He made me feel like I was never enough. Whenever something went wrong, he'd make me think everything was my fault.”
Ryan's jaw tightened.
“He sounds like a terrible person.”
Emma smiled sadly.
“Maybe.”
“You deserve better.”
“I know that now.”
Ryan reached across the table.
He didn't grab her hand.
He simply placed his hand near hers.
“Emma, I'm not him.”
She looked at him.
“I know.”
“You don't have to trust me immediately.”
His voice was gentle.
“Let me earn it.”
Emma stared at him.
Something about those words made her heart ache.
She slowly placed her hand in his.
Ryan smiled.
And for the first time, Emma didn't pull away.
Across the restaurant, however, someone was watching them.
Victoria Anderson.
She had arrived at the restaurant with a friend and immediately recognized her son.
Her eyes narrowed when she saw Emma holding his hand.
She didn't approach them.
Instead, she watched.
She noticed the way Ryan looked at Emma.
The way he smiled.
The way he leaned toward her when she spoke.
Victoria knew her son.
She had never seen him look at a woman that way.
“This is serious,” she whispered.
Her friend looked at her.
“Who is she?”
“I don't know.”
“You're going to find out?”
Victoria nodded.
“Absolutely.”
Back at the table, Emma and Ryan continued talking.
Eventually, dessert arrived.
Emma laughed at something Ryan said.
Then Ryan suddenly became quiet.
“What?”
Emma asked.
“Nothing.”
“You're staring.”
“I'm thinking.”
“About?”
Ryan smiled.
“I'm wondering how someone I met yesterday already feels familiar.”
Emma's smile faded into something softer.
“I've been thinking the same thing.”
Neither of them noticed the restaurant's front door opening.
Sophia Bennett walked inside.
She had not expected to see Emma there.
And when she did, she stopped.
Her eyes immediately went to Ryan.
She stared at him for several seconds.
Then she looked at Emma.
Something uncomfortable twisted inside her.
She had never seen Emma this happy.
And instead of feeling completely happy for her friend, Sophia felt something she didn't want to admit.
Jealousy.
She quickly forced a smile and walked toward them.
“Emma?”
Emma turned.
“Sophia!”
She stood.
“What are you doing here?”
“Dinner.”
Sophia smiled.
“Apparently.”
Her eyes moved toward Ryan.
“Hi.”
Ryan stood politely.
“Hi. I'm Ryan.”
“Sophia.”
They shook hands.
Sophia smiled.
“So you're the mysterious guy.”
Emma frowned.
“Mysterious?”
“You wouldn't stop talking about him yesterday.”
“I did not!”
Ryan laughed.
Sophia sat down for a moment.
“You two look cute together.”
“Thank you,” Ryan said.
Sophia's smile remained.
But her eyes didn't.
After a few minutes, she excused herself.
“Enjoy your date.”
When she walked away, Emma watched her.
“Was that weird?”
Ryan shook his head.
“Maybe a little.”
Emma shrugged.
“She's probably just surprised.”
Ryan didn't respond.
He had noticed the strange look Sophia gave him.
But he decided not to mention it.
The evening eventually came to an end.
Ryan drove Emma home.
When they stopped outside her apartment, Emma turned toward him.
“I had a really good time.”
“So did I.”
There was a quiet moment.
Emma reached for the door handle.
Then stopped.
“Ryan?”
“Yes?”
“Thank you.”
“For what?”
“For making tonight easy.”
He smiled.
“You made it easy.”
Emma opened the door.
Before getting out, she looked at him.
“Goodnight.”
“Goodnight, Emma.”
She stepped outside.
Ryan waited until she reached the entrance before driving away.
Emma watched his car disappear.
She touched her chest.
Her heart was beating faster than normal.
She smiled.
Maybe she was falling for him.
Maybe that wasn't such a bad thing.
But inside the Anderson mansion across town, Victoria was already making plans.
She placed a folder on the dining table.
“What's this?” Ryan's father asked.
“Information.”
“About?”
“Emma Carter.”
He looked at his wife.
“Why are you investigating her?”
“Because our son is serious about her.”
“And?”
Victoria opened the folder.
“And I need to know exactly who she is.”
She pulled out a photograph.
Emma's photograph.
Victoria studied it carefully.
Then she looked at her husband.
“I won't let Ryan make a mistake that could affect this family.”
Meanwhile, Emma was lying on her bed, staring at her phone.
A message appeared.
Ryan: I already miss talking to you.
Emma smiled.
She typed a reply.
Emma: It's only been twenty minutes.
His response came almost immediately.
Ryan: Exactly.
Emma laughed.
She didn't know it yet, but that simple message would become one of the memories she would desperately hold onto when everything began falling apart.
Because love was entering her life.
And so were the lies.
Neither Emma nor Ryan knew that three different people were already standing between them and their future.
Victoria wanted them separated.
Sophia was beginning to envy them.
