ESTELLE WINTERS
5 YEARS LATER
"So tell Mummy, what do you want for your birthday tomorrow?" I asked in a soothing manner, rubbing my daughter's hair.
It was blonde, just like mine but she had his eyes— Green, just like the alive leaf on the tree branches but the only difference was that my daughter was different — her eyes — were dead and unfocused.
Nyx leaned into me, her nose rubbing on my palms, she was like a wounded little beast, making my heart ache.
"Mummy" she mumbled "I want mummy as a birthday gift"
I chuckled loudly at her words "Mummy is here with you everyday, don't you want a different thing?, like a barbie doll?" I asked.
She pouted her lips, her green eyes moving, my daughter stretched out her hand, feeling me in a comforting manner.
Then she said
"Why do I need a barbie doll— I can't see anyways"
Ahh that's right.
My daughter Nyx, was born blind.
....
Nyx Winters.
What name was better than that.
I had her on a full moon, an unsuspecting day.
Working several shifts in an unknown country just to make end meets and buy baby things before my child arrived.
This girl decided to surprise me.
She came earlier while I was at work and I single handedly delivered her in my workplace kitchen before I was rushed to the hospital.
She was normal, like every other child.
She laughed and cried, her green eyes turning wet with tears.
Until her 3 months,
When the doctor diagnosed her as blind.
I could remember that day, it felt like my whole world was falling apart, breaking into tiny fragments that even I couldn't pick up and mend.
I didn't dare call Yusuf, after all, his mate had just died and he was still grieving.
I was helpless, determined to find out the cause, I met the doctor and asked him why.
And he had told me a news that broke my heart.
Some sort of strange drug had been injected in me during the earliest period of my pregnancy, therefore affecting the cell divisions and that was when I remembered.
Wolfsbane.
Adriano.
My mate was the one.
Since that day, I made up my mind.
I was going to make sure, Nyx doesn't know anything about her father.
Both the good and bad sides.
It was better that way.
....
"Mummy...can I not go to school?" Nyx asked , her hand clutching onto her backpack.
I shook my head with a smile, remembering that I was just like her when I was younger.
"Today is your first day Nyx, why don't you want to go?" I asked in a gentle tone.
She bit her lips and gripped my hands "I don't want to leave your side"
I chuckled and patted her hair, taking care not to mess up the hairstyle that I had carefully tied for her this morning — it took me 30 minutes!!.
"Didn't you say you want to be a doctor?" I asked, she paused, a pout on her lips.
"I have to go to school to be a doctor"
She finished for me and I burst into laughter.
"That's true"
I patted her hair lovingly with a smile, this was usually what I have been saying to her since last week that she has just come of age.
"You will be absolutely fine honey, trust me" I added.
We got down from the taxi and paid, then I led her into the kindergarten.
It wasn't big but it was child friendly, the teachers were kind and warm and that was what encouraged me, after all, Nyx was a special child.
"Is this little Nyx?" Her new class teacher asked with a smile
Nyx gripped onto my shirt, her unfocused eyes glancing at a direction.
"Nyx, say hello to your teacher" I cooed but nyx pouted unwillingly and shook her head.
I sighed, then handed her over to the kind ginger haired lady.
"Remember what i said baby, I'll come pick you up soon" I said and waved at her, she didn't wave back and I could sense her reluctance but I took a deep breath and looked away.
.....
Surpassingly, Nyx adapted to her new school and she was loving every bit of it, according to her, she had even made some new friends.
"I will pick you up earlier today so that we can make preparations for your birthday"
I explained.
Nyx and I stood in front of the kindergarten's gate, there was a happy smile on her lips.
She nodded "okay mummy"
"Happy birthday in advance Nyx baby" I wished and she smiled brightly, latching onto her teacher, they both walked into the school.
I heaved a sigh of relief, then headed to the waiting Taxi.
Time for some birthday shopping.
Tomorrow was going to be Nyx 5th birthday and I wanted it to be a memorable one.
But just two hours into shopping, I received a call from the school.
"What do you mean my daughter is missing!,".
