Girls want to change him but Maxwell can't be changed. Most certainly not by the young poised, redhead detective who shows disinterest in his handsomely good looks. Rookie to expert, AJ Burgess can't stand the self-assertive quarterback. She sees no talent but a man who loves the attention of his fans. But what happens when the tough and isolated Detective is instructed to pretend to be the playboy's wife? Will she be able to resist his charm and not be fooled by the irresistible go-getter? *** Eight hours ago I felt a tap on my shoulder and saw my best friend Daniel standing with the football tucked under his arm. "Are you ready? I heard Liam is on today" Daniel asked and I smiled shaking my head and bandaging my fingers together. "Let him be, I am ready for that punk," I said and Daniel shook his head. "Remember what the coach said." I rolled my eyes standing up. "The coach and the team would be lost without me" I growled he shook his head. "I wish you would stop thinking like that." He said walking off. I just groaned and hit my locker door shut. I grabbed my helmet and walked through the door. I was jumping up and down warming up my muscles. The coach walked towards me slapping me on the shoulder. "You ready?" He asked and I nodded. The doors opened and we jogged out onto the field with the crowd roaring around us it made every cell in my body multiply. I slipped on my helmet and walked toward my mates. "Well, Maxwell has some balls coming out onto the field after his last disappointment" Liam said clapping his hands together. I just gave him a f**k you smile and jogged off. Throughout the game he was testing me, he jogged into me or shoved me away. They said no fighting or I am off, but this bastard was asking for it. I was yelling commands, catching the ball and before I could think of passing it downfield, he tackled me. He stood up laughing at me. I jumped up and connected my fist with his helmet. He flew backwards landing on his back. I heard the whistle of the referee and I let out a breath as I saw the coach scowling at me. I ripped off my helmet and walked toward the coach. "I warned you" Coach Victor said his voice low but harsh. "He was asking for it," I said slumping down. "f**k it, Maxwell. This is football not some competition between you and Liam. If you can't take it, then you are off!" He yelled putting on another player. "I will find a replacement in your place, don't test me" He warned shoving me towards the field. I saw Liam smirking at me. I wanted to remove that fucken smirk, but the coach's words replayed in my mind. Replacement. After winning the game we jogged back to the locker room, but not before a girl caught my eye. I stopped and walked toward her. "I was wondering if you are looking for fun tonight?" The blond asked with a flirty voice. She held out a card and I took it. "Call me big boy," she said winking at me. "Johnson!" I heard the coach yell, I walked backwards still looking at her. "I am free all-night honey, might want to get some sleep while you can" I yelled and she smiled blowing me a kiss. I felt a slap on the back of my head. "Ow," I growled turning around to find the coach glaring at me. "What am I going to do with you?" He grumbled. I shrugged my shoulders in aloofness. "Did you see-" He stopped me before I could talk. "Stop it, Johnson. Those girls are going to be your downfall beware" Coach Victor said walking off. I turned my head watching the girl winking at me. It is pure fun—how could they be my downfall? I headed for the locker room. I took off my gear while no one spoke to me and headed to the shoulders alone. “Maxwell!” Coach Victor yelled. “Yes, coach,” I answered stopping before entering the showers. “I want to see you in my office,” I rolled my eyes. “Can I just have my shower or do you want to see me now?” “See me before you leave,” He replied curtly and I couldn’t quite understand his attitude. I took a shower and expected the guys to wait up since we are going to celebrate our win but I was a twinge hurt when I found the locker room to be empty by the time I got back. I pulled my locker door open to get my pants when I found an unfamiliar man entering the room. “Fans are not allowed to be back here,” I informed him dropping my towel and slipping on my pants. The guy just stood there looking at me silently. “Can I help you?” I asked getting a strange vibe from this guy. He kept staring and I felt uncomfortable with having him here. I started to call for the guards to take him away when he pulled out a firearm and pointed it at me. I took a step back thinking this was a robbery so I offered him my wallet. “Maxwell?” I heard the coach call out and before I could warn him not to come here. I heard a shot fired and felt it hit my shoulder. "What the f**k?" The impact of the bullet made me tumble backwards, my head hitting the locker door before I went completely down and lay there. I could still hear the coach calling my name and I try to yell for him to go away. The more he kept calling out to me. My whole body felt limp, my lips couldn't move I wanted to scream but nothing came out. PAY-TO-READ will be commenced in the following week.
