Chapter 2

Alvina's Point of View “That's more than one pint of blood!” I called Richester’s attention but he didn't stop. “Richard!” I called out to my boyfriend who didn't look bothered. “Take as much as you want, that would be enough for Nora.” I couldn't believe these words were coming from the man I loved. He neglected my condition and cared only for the fate of his lover. “It's enough now.” Richester said with a quick smile before leaving the room with Nora, who sat on the wheelchair. I staggered, trying to control the unusual feelings streaming from inside me. Richard advanced to leave the room when I quickly grabbed his arm. “We need to talk.” I had little or no strength but I had to try. I wouldn't keep living like this. Maybe I could, but I must also benefit from it rather than being a lackey forever. “About what?” He asked me scornfully. “Our marriage, Rich. We have to get married as planned but right now, it has to come faster.” I informed him seriously and he sighed. “I have better things to do right now than thinking about our marriage.” He hissed. “Our marriage is important to me, Richard. I can't let this slide right now.” I almost screamed at his face. “I need to go, Nora needs me.” He struggled to pull my hand away. “We should finish our talk rather than thinking about Nora. We have to get married, Richard.” I ranted angrily and before I knew it, a hard slap landed on my face. I knew I was desperate. I knew I was intentionally walking into hell but I needed to save my only family. “How dare you!” He cussed with anger pervading through his cold gaze. “Nora is more important than our marriage and until she approves it, and feels better, we are never getting married.” He spilled bluntly at my face as my jaw dropped. “What?” And without another word, he pushed me away and walked out of the room. My world came crashing and I was slowly regretting what I wanted. Why was he treating me this way? Would he never love me again? We were lovers, he made me feel something I had never felt before and everything turned to mystery when Nora showed up. Couldn't we go back to the way we were? Looking lifeless, I walked in the hallway, planning to return home since I was done with every hospital activity. I saw him discussing indistinctly with Richester and at the other corner was Nora. I wouldn't have noticed her if she hadn't laughed at me in mockery. “Do you think you can end up with Richard?” She said through her laugh and I ignored her. “As long as I'm alive, Richard would never get married to you and you would be forever used as my blood donor.” She reminded me curtly and laughed again. “You have no right to decide for him.” I gritted my teeth, feeling annoyed. “Who told you?” She pulled her wheelchair closer to me. All these acts, I knew she was faking it. “I have Richard wrapped around my finger and until I let him go, you will remain unmarried and unloved.” She emphasized on each word, staring into my eyes. I had the urge to slap her but I held myself. That was what she wanted, to cause chaos between Richard and I but I wasn't going to give it to her. Unfortunately, I didn't see her action coming. “Ouch!” After a loud slap on her lap, she screamed and Richard rushed up to us including Richester. “What happened here?” Richard asked anxiously, as his eyes wandered around us. He quickly walked over to her corner, caressing and asking her questions with concern lancing through his weak eyes. Surprisingly, Nora started crying which was so shocking. “I… I didn't touch you.” I found myself stuttering out of shock. “Mr. Richard, we need to finish our conversation.” Richester tried to change the topic. “Miss. Alvina is dying and needs to be treated soonest. If she continues donating blood to…” Richester was still speaking when Richard shunned him. “I don't care! I don't care about this bitches health!” He barked angrily, facing Richester. “As long as she can give us blood and sustain Nora, that's all I want to know.” His statement followed and my heart shrank. It was as if my whole world collapsed and I felt suffocated. “Seriously? I'm also human too, you know.” I cried out bitterly. “The next time you touch Nora, I will give you a different kind of punishment, trust me.” He snorted aggressively and returned to the room with her. I sighed heavily, clutching my chest. This was surreal. “Are you okay?” Richester's word faded as I was in a daze. The following morning, I was cleaning the living room when Ruth strolled in and snatched the vacuum cleaner from me. “What are you doing here? Aren't you supposed to be outside searching for a man? Or will you accept whoever I chose?” She rambled at my face in disgust and I sighed heavily. The last hope I had was Richard and with his recent behavior, I doubt if he would end up with me. “Are there men outside? I mean, you aren't asking me to do prostitution, right?” I asked, raising an anxious brow. “If you can, do it and leave this house. Seeing your face only annoys me.” She spat at my face. “But I don't…” I trailed off when I saw a familiar figure enter the living room. The other servant bowed after ushering him and left. “Who are you?” With a scornful brow, Ruth questioned him almost immediately. Was he here to break up with me? That would be bad and I didn't want Ruth to find out about it. “Ma'am, he is…” I tried to speak when his statement stopped me. “I'm Richard and I'm here to marry Alvina, she will become my wife.” He announced, looking serious as he slowly faced me with affection lingering in his eyes. “Richard…” I couldn't believe my ears. We just quarreled yesterday and according to Nora, she wouldn't let me have him. Why was he here and was he serious about our marriage? “What did you say?” Ruth asked, making a comeback and he approached me, grabbing my arm tenderly. This was the man I knew, I loved and continually fell for. “Alvina and I are getting married and it's happening in a few days.” He said vividly, softly squeezing my hands. I felt safe again and couldn't wait to get married to him.
