The roses came up in June. Elara was in the east garden when the first ones opened — standing at the turn of the path where six months ago a man had waited for her in the early morning light with his mother's ring in his coat pocket and the whole long winter behind them. She stood and looked at the roses with the particular, unhurried attention she gave to things that deserved it, and thought about Cecily Hargrove saying the roses are extraordinary in the voice of a woman passing something on. She had been right. They were extraordinary — deep red, full-petaled, climbing the old stone walls with the absolute confidence of things that had been doing exactly this for decades and saw no reason to stop. They smelled like the specific, concentrated version of every good thing about summer. They made the east garden into something that bore almost no resemblance to the bare, frost-hardened severity she had first walked through in November, which was, she thought, rather the point. Things looked different in summer. Everything looked different in summer. The announcement had gone into the papers in May. Lord Voss had managed it with the quiet, thorough efficiency she had come to expect from him — the correct wording, the correct timing, the correct people informed before the public notice so that the story arrived in the right circles already framed, already contextualised, already surrounded by the careful architecture of six months of patient preparation. The response had been — divided. She had expected nothing else and was not disappointed. Sir Edmund Graves wrote a letter of congratulation that arrived within forty-eight hours and was, Lord Voss informed them at dinner, the most significant single document the announcement had produced — a man of his standing offering his congratulations publicly and promptly was a statement that required no translation in the circles that mattered. Mrs. Fitch did not write. The silence from that quarter was, Elara decided, its own form of congratulation. Lady Fenwick's response was conveyed through the county's social temperature rather than direct communication — a slight, perceptible cooling that was already, by June, beginning to look less like principled disapproval and more like the stubborn persistence of a woman who had committed to a position and could not find a graceful exit. Lord Voss had said, with the mild satisfaction of a man watching a tide turn: "She will come around by autumn. They always do when the alternative is being excluded from the significant gatherings." "And if she doesn't?" Elara had asked. "Then autumn gatherings will be improved by her absence," he had said, and poured more wine, and that had been the end of that. The county, on balance, had landed where Lord Voss had predicted. Not warmly — not universally, not without reservation. There were drawing rooms in which Elara's name was still spoken with a particular inflection that she recognised and had decided, sometime in the spring, to treat as information rather than injury. There were women who would never fully revise their version of events and she had made her peace with that in the way you made peace with things that were true and could not be changed: completely, and then you stopped looking at them. What she had not anticipated was the warmth from other quarters. Mrs. Pemberton — whom she had catalogued at the house party as a manageable neutral — called in May with the directness of a woman who had made a decision and saw no reason to equivocate about it. She sat in the Ravenshire drawing room and drank her tea and said, without preamble: "I have known Sebastian Voss since he was eight years old and I have never once seen him look at anything the way he looks at you. I thought you should know that from someone who is not obligated to say it." Elara had thanked her. "Don't thank me," Mrs. Pemberton had said, in a tone that reminded Elara strongly of Lord Voss. "It is simply accurate." She had written to Cecily Hargrove in April. A short letter — honest, careful, offering nothing she had not meant. Cecily had written back in May, equally short, equally honest. She was engaged, she had written, to a man of her own choosing — a second son, no title, entirely unsuitable by her family's previous standards, and she was, she had written in the final line with a lightness that carried real weight underneath it: happier than I have been in years. Elara had read the letter twice and been more genuinely glad of anything in recent months. The wedding was set for September. Not a large affair — this had been discussed and agreed upon with the practical unanimity of people who had been through enough to know the difference between what they wanted and what they wanted to perform. The Ravenshire chapel, a small gathering, the people who had stood by them through the winter and deserved to stand by them now. Lord Voss had wept, briefly and with great dignity, when Sebastian told him September. Her mother had wept with considerably less dignity and absolutely no concern about it, which was, Elara thought, one of the things she loved most about her mother. She was still in the east garden — the roses opened around her and the June light doing its unhurried summer work across the Ravenshire grounds — when she heard the footstep on the gravel behind her. She did not turn. She heard him stop. He stood beside her and looked at what she was looking at, in the way he had been standing beside her and looking at what she was looking at since a November morning that felt, in June, like something from another chapter of a very long story. "Cecily was right," she said. "She usually is," he agreed. "They are extraordinary." "Yes." She looked at the roses for another moment. His hand found hers — unhurried, certain, the way he did everything that mattered. She looked down at his mother's ring on her finger in the summer light. It had been hers for two months and felt, already, as though it had always been. "Sebastian," she said. "Yes." "Tell me the forty-three things." A pause. "Now?" "We have time," she said. "We have all the time." He was quiet for a moment. She could feel him considering it — the particular quality of his thinking silence, which she could read from across a room and cherished from beside him. "One," he said. "The morning you walked into my library and sat in my chair as though you had always belonged there." "That was the first thing?" "That was the first thing," he confirmed. "Everything else came after." She looked at the roses. "Two," he said, and continued. The June morning moved around them — the birds and the old stone walls and the roses doing their extraordinary summer work and the iron gates standing open at the end of the long drive the way they had been standing open, she supposed, for every significant arrival and departure this house had ever witnessed. They stood in the east garden of Ravenshire Manor and he told her all forty-three things, one by one, in the unhurried voice of a man with all the time in the world. She listened to every one. She was still there, in the summer of it, in the warmth of it, in the absolute and unassailable certainty of it. She was, finally, entirely home. ~ FIN ~
