CHAPTER THREE: The Long Wait

519 Words
The sky was a heavy slate grey, dark clouds swirling ominously, hinting at the forthcoming rainfall. The atmosphere was thick with moisture, making the atmosphere feel electric, yet forbidding. People huddled indoors, reluctant to venture out, knowing that braving the elements meant risking the chill that would surely seep into their bones, leaving them bedridden with illness. Yet, amidst this dreary backdrop, a troupe of children darted joyfully through the streets, laughter ringing out like music against the gloomy forecast. They splashed through puddles, their carefree spirits igniting a sense of wonder as they made merry in the cool, refreshing rain, completely oblivious to their parents' frustrated warnings echoing behind them. Oblivious to the warning signs of a looming cold, their delight was palpable, a stark contrast to the somberness around them. The stormy breeze showed no mercy as it took every object off the street. Just after the clock struck noon, a phone call burst through to Amelia, shattering the stillness of the day and setting her heart racing with anticipation. “UGH! It’s one in the afternoon, can’t this not wait”. She cried out aloud with a distasteful and disdainful look at the troublesome phone bothering not to look. Another ring came ringing. “Geez! I had a long day at work. Why won’t anyone understand?” “Yes. This is Amelia speaking. Good afternoon? This better be good” she said underneath her breath. “HI babe.” Realizing the voice behind the phone, her eyes grew wide, still not believing the voice she misses. She mentioned what seemed like forever. “JOHN? Oh my gosh, is that you? “Yes, Lia, it’s me, John. Your one and only.” He spoke after a long pause. “I’ve got a surprise for you cupcake. Am back in LA, and I brought your favorite chocolate you told me about.” “Have missed everything about you my Lia, and I can’t wait to savor your soft lips.” “Did you miss me? He asked in a husky yet charming voice. “Get off from work on time, my family and I will visit your place. I wanna feast my eyes on you soonest. Dress GORGEOUS for me, love you very much. Bye.” Squealing with joy, Amelia didn’t fail to show her excitement as her man returned. “Let me put a call through Mirabel and share with her this good news. Wait! We are not on good terms at the moment,” she remembered, as her countenance changed from happy to sad. "Mirabel, I miss you so much," Amelie sighed heavily, unable to bear the distance created by their argument. "I wish we had never fought." Amelie looked at the space beside her, feeling the weight of Mirabel's absence. "What's happening to us? We used to be so close." She bit her lip, her eyes glistening with unshed tears. "I just want things to go back to the way they were, without any secrets or misunderstandings." Amelie hugged a pillow tightly, whispering to herself, "We'll get through this, I promise. We always do."
