The Signal In My Room.

1705 Words
Ada's POV "Your room." For a second... I didn't understand what James had said. Then my eyes widened. "My room?" James nodded. "The signal is coming from there." Every muscle in my body went tense. Liam's gaze shifted toward the corridor leading upstairs. Someone had been in my room. Someone had planted something there. My mouth suddenly felt dry. "How long has it been transmitting?" The guard checked the device in his hand. "Approximately six hours, sir." Six hours. My stomach dropped. Six hours ago... I had been in my room. Sleeping. Completely unaware that someone could have been tracking my every movement. I looked at Liam. "Does that mean they've known exactly where I was this whole time?" His jaw tightened. "Possibly." "Possibly?" I stared at him. "That's not comforting." James looked at Liam. "Whit dae ye think?" I turned to him. "What?" James blinked. Liam didn't take his eyes off the corridor. "Dinnae know yet. But something's no' right." I stared at both of them. "Excuse me?" James glanced at me. "What?" "Why are you speaking like that?" For the first time in what felt like forever... A faint smile touched his face. "Scottish." I frowned. "You both just switched in front of me." "We didn't," Liam said. "You absolutely did." James folded his arms. "Aye, lass, we're just talking." I narrowed my eyes. "You're both annoying." "That's not a language," James said. "I know. I'm describing the two of you." I said back James laughed. Liam's lips twitched. "Smart girl." I blinked at him. "Was that supposed to be a compliment?" "Don't get used to it." Liam said I folded my arms. "Too late." James let out a laugh. For one brief moment... The fear inside me loosened. Just a little. Then Liam looked toward the staircase. The softness vanished from his face. "We need to move." I swallowed. "To my room?" "Yes." I didn't like the sound of that. At all. But I nodded. "Fine." Liam started walking. I followed immediately. He stopped. I almost walked into his back. "What?" He turned slowly. "You stay behind me." I sighed. "Again?" "Yes." "You know, for someone who doesn't like repeating himself, you repeat yourself a lot." James snorted. Liam gave him a look. James immediately cleared his throat. "she has a point." I smiled. Liam shook his head. "Both of you." We started up the staircase. This time... I stayed close to Liam. Very close. I wasn't trying to. At least... That was what I told myself. Halfway up the stairs, my hand brushed against his. I quickly pulled mine away. "Sorry." He glanced down. "It's fine." But for some reason... The silence between us changed. I stared straight ahead. Trying very hard not to think about how warm his hand had felt This was ridiculous. Someone had planted a tracking device in my room. I should be terrified. And I am. But apparently, my brain had chosen this exact moment to notice Liam's hands. Wonderful. James, who was walking behind us, suddenly said, "Am I interrupting something?" My eyes widened. "No!" Liam looked over his shoulder. "James." "What?" "Quiet." James grinned. I glared at him. "Mind your business." "That's exactly what I'm trying to do." he replied back I turned back around. "I hate both of you." "No, you don't," James said. I pointed at Liam. "I haven't decided about him yet." Liam's eyebrow lifted. "How generous." I almost smiled. Then... A strange sound came from the end of the corridor. Everyone stopped. My heart dropped. It sounded like... Something falling. Liam immediately moved in front of me. James' smile disappeared. "Did you hear that?" I whispered. Liam nodded. "Stay here." "No." He looked back at me. I crossed my arms. "I'm not staying anywhere." "Ada." He started "You keep leaving me behind, and somehow people keep finding ways to get into my life." I said James slowly nodded. "She's got you there." Liam gave him a look. "Whose side are you on?" James shrugged. "The entertaining one." Despite the fear curling in my stomach... I almost laughed. Liam sighed. "Fine." I smiled. "Really?" "Stay behind me." The smile disappeared from my face. "That's not the same thing." "It's the best you're getting." He started toward my room. James followed. I followed too. The corridor felt darker than usual. Every shadow looked wrong. Every sound made my heart jump. When we reached my door... Liam stopped. It was closed. Exactly the way I remembered leaving it. "Did you lock it?" he asked. "Yes." He looked at the handle. It wasn't locked anymore. My stomach twisted. "I did lock it." Liam slowly reached for the handle. James stood behind me. For once... He wasn't making jokes. Liam pushed the door open. The room was dark. Nothing moved. Nothing made a sound. "Lights," Liam said. James reached inside and switched them on. I held my breath. My room looked normal. Too normal. The bed was still made. My bag sat where I'd left it. The curtains were closed. Liam stepped inside. I followed. "Ada, stay by the door." "Okay." I actually listened this time. There was a limit to my stubbornness. Liam checked the wardrobe. The bathroom. Behind the curtains. Nothing. James crouched beside the bed. "Found something." My stomach dropped. Liam joined him. "What?" James pulled out a small black object. My eyes widened. "Is that it?" "No." Liam took the device. His expression darkened. "This is a second transmitter." I stared at him. "Second?" James stood slowly. "One wasn't enough. A cold feeling spread through me. "Why would someone put two?" Liam looked toward the door. "Because they didn't want to risk us finding the first one." "But we did." "Exactly." My chest tightened. Someone had been careful. Someone who knew what they were doing. I looked around my room. Suddenly... Everything felt contaminated. My bed. My clothes. My things. Someone had been here. Watching. Waiting. I wrapped my arms around myself. Liam noticed. His expression softened. "You okay?" I laughed once. It sounded bitter. "Do I look okay?" He stepped closer. "No." The honesty caught me off guard. For a moment... Neither of us spoke. Then he lowered his voice. "We'll find out who did this." "How?" His eyes held mine. "I don't know yet." That surprised me. Liam always seemed to have an answer. A plan. Control. But this time... He was admitting that he didn't know. And somehow... I trusted him more for it. James suddenly cleared his throat. "Sorry to interrupt this..." I immediately stepped away from Liam. He looked at me.. I looked anywhere but at him. James continued. "But there's something else." We turned. He was standing beside my dressing table. "What?" James pointed toward the mirror. At first... I saw nothing. Then I stepped closer. My breath stopped. Someone had written something across the mirror. Not with ink. With a finger. As though the words had been written through steam. But there was no steam. No water. Just the message. Three words. WE SEE YOU. I couldn't move. James swore quietly. Liam's entire body went still. My voice came out as a whisper. "They were in here." "Yes," Liam said. My eyes remained fixed on the mirror. "While I was sleeping?" Silence. That was answer enough. A cold shiver ran through me. I turned toward Liam. "What if they were here the whole time?" "They weren't." He answered "How do you know?" I asked He didn't answer. My heart began racing again. I backed away from the mirror. Straight into Liam. His hands immediately caught my arms. For one second.... I froze. Then I realized how close we were. His hands were firm around my arms. His eyes were on mine. "Ada." I swallowed. "What?" "Look at me." I already was. "You're safe." I almost laughed. "Someone was in my room while I was sleeping." His expression hardened. "I know.". "Then don't tell me I'm safe." His hands remained on my arms. "I'm telling you they won't come near you again." Something in his voice made me believe him. Maybe it was the anger. Maybe it was the certainty. Or maybe... I was beginning to trust him more than I should. James cleared his throat again. "Right. This is a very touching moment, but—" I stepped away from Liam immediately.. James grinned. "I saw nothing." "You talk too much," Liam said. "I've been told." A guard suddenly appeared at the door. "Sir!" Liam turned. "What?" The guard looked shaken. "We found another access record." James frowned. "From tonight?" "No, sir." The guard swallowed. "From the night miss Ada arrived." The room went silent. Liam's face changed. "Show me." The guard handed him a tablet. I moved closer despite myself. The record showed a list of names. Times. Access points. One name was highlighted. My stomach dropped. James stared at the screen. "No." Liam's expression became cold. "What is it?" I asked. Neither of them answered. "Guys." James looked at me. Then at Liam. Liam slowly handed me the tablet. My eyes scanned the screen. Then stopped. A name. One I recognized. MRS. ROSE. My breath caught. The room seemed to tilt. "No." I looked up. "That can't be right." Liam's jaw tightened. James looked completely stunned. I stared at the screen again. Mrs. Rose. The woman who had comforted me. The woman who had brought me tea. The woman who had told me Liam kept his promises. She had accessed the security system... The night I arrived. And suddenly... I remembered something. Her face when the alarm went off. The way she had looked toward the window. The way she always seemed to know exactly where I was. My heart began pounding. "No..." Liam took the tablet from my hands. "Don't jump to conclusions." I stared at him. "You're saying that?" He didn't answer. A sound suddenly came from the corridor. Soft footsteps. Then... Mrs. Rose's voice. "Ada, dear?" My blood turned cold. Everyone in the room froze. James slowly reached for his weapon. Liam looked at the guards. No one moved. Mrs. Rose knocked softly. "Ada?" I couldn't breathe. Liam stepped in front of me. And whispered, "Don't open the door."
