I nodded.
For once, i didn't argue.
Because deep down, I knew something.
Whatever had started the night I witnessed that terrible secret hadn't ended.
It had only followed me here.
And now...
It was getting closer.
LIAM'S POV
I watched Ada walk beside me as we headed toward the west wing.
She was trying to act brave.
I could tell.
Her steps were steady, her head held high, but every few seconds her eyes moved toward the shadows around us.
She was afraid.
And I couldn't blame her.
If anything, I blamed myself.
I had brought her here because I believed my mansion was the safest place for her.
Yet someone had entered her room.
Someone had planted two tracking devices.
Someone had written a message on her mirror.
And now Mrs. Rose had disappeared.
Something was wrong.
Very wrong.
I glanced at the guards walking ahead of us.
“Check every entrance to the west wing.”
“Yes, sir.” They replied
“And don't let anyone leave the mansion without my permission.” I said
“Yes, sir.” They answered
Ada looked at me.
“You think she's still here?”
“Who?” I asked
“Mrs. Rose.” She answered
I looked ahead.
“I don't know.”
She frowned.
“You really need to stop saying that.”
I looked down at her.
“Would you rather I lie?”
“No.” She slowly said
“Then I'll tell you the truth.” I told her
She sighed.
“Fair enough.”
We continued walking.
James was a few steps behind us, unusually quiet.
I knew him well enough to recognize when he was thinking.
And he was thinking hard.
I slowed down until he caught up with us.
“What?”
He glanced at Ada before looking at me.
“Nothing.”
I raised an eyebrow.
“James.”
He sighed.
“I don't like this.”
“Neither do I.” I replied
“No, I mean I really don't like this.” James said
His eyes moved toward the corridor.
“Mrs. Rose doesn't just disappear.”
“I know.” I answered
“And the cameras don't just stop recording.” James continued
“I know.”
“And two trackers don't magically appear in someone's room.
I looked at him.
“I know.”
He gave me a look.
“Then you know we're dealing with someone who has access to this house.”
I didn't answer.
Because that was exactly what I was thinking.
My security system wasn't something an ordinary person could bypass.
Everyone working in the mansion had been checked.
Every member of my security team had been vetted.
Which meant whoever had done this either had help...
Or had been inside long enough to learn how everything worked.
Neither possibility sat well with me..
Ada suddenly stopped.
I stopped too.
“What is it?” I asked.
She looked toward the hallway behind us.
“Did you hear that?”
Everyone became still.
I listened.
Nothing.
Then,
A faint sound.
A door closing somewhere in the distance.
James immediately reached for his weapon.
I raised my hand.
“Stay here.”
Ada's eyes widened.
“No.”
I looked at her.
“I'm only checking the corridor.”
“I’m coming.” She said
“Ada.” I started
“You told me to stay close.”She cut me off
“I meant close to me.”I answered
“Exactly.”
James looked away, hiding a smile.
I gave him a warning look.
He cleared his throat.
“I didn't say anything.”
I sighed.
There was no point arguing with her.
“Fine.”
I moved closer to Ada.
“Stay behind me.”
She nodded.
We continued down the corridor.
The sound had come from somewhere near the old guest rooms.
I signaled the guards to spread out.
The mansion was silent again.
Too silent.
I hated silence like this.
It usually meant someone was waiting.
We reached the end of the corridor.
One of the guards checked the first door.
Empty.
The second.
Empty.
The third—
He stopped.
“Sir.”
I walked over.
“What?”
He pointed at the floor.
A small trail of dirt crossed the carpet.
Fresh.
I crouched and touched it.
Still damp.
Someone had been outside recently.
I looked toward the nearest window.
It was slightly open.
My expression hardened.
“Check outside.”
Two guards immediately moved toward it.
Ada stayed behind me.
I could feel her staring at the window.
“Someone came through here?” She asked
“Possibly.” I answered calmly
She sighed.
“There's that word again.”
I looked at her.
“It's an important word.”
She gave me a look.
I almost smiled.
Then one of the guards called out.
“Sir!”
I turned.
He was standing near the window.
“There are footprints.”
“How many?” I asked
“One set.” he replied
“Male or female?” I asked again
“Can't tell yet.”He said
I walked over.
The footprints led away from the window and toward the side of the property.
My mind started working.
If someone had entered from outside, they had to know where the security blind spots were.
That meant this wasn't random.
They knew the mansion.
They knew the security system.
And they knew Ada was here.
I looked back at her.
She was standing silently in the corridor.
Her eyes met mine.
I didn't like how vulnerable she looked.
She had been strong since the moment I met her.
So stubborn.
Mouthy.
Impossible.
But right now, she looked young.
Scared.
And for a moment, I remembered the first time I'd seen her.
She had been running.
I could still remember the sound of her footsteps.
The panic in her voice.
The way she looked behind her every few seconds.
She had crashed straight into me.
And before I even had time to think, I had grabbed her.
She had fought me.
She had screamed.
She had demanded that I let her go.
But I couldn't.
Because I knew what was coming.
I knew the people chasing her wouldn't stop.
And I knew that if I left her there, she wouldn't survive the night.
So I had shoved her into my car.
I still remembered the look she gave me.
She thought I was another threat.
Maybe, in that moment, I was.
But I had made a choice.
And I would make the same choice again.
Even now.
Especially now.
“Liam?” I heard my name and blinked.
Ada was looking at me.
“What?” I asked
“You were staring at me.” She said
“I was thinking.” I replied
“About me?” She asked
I hesitated.
“Yes.”
Her eyebrows lifted.
I looked away before she could read too much into my answer.
“About what happened that night.”
Her expression changed.
“Oh.”
I could see the memory return to her face.
She looked down.
“I still remember everything clearly.”
“You don't have to.
I looked at her.
“What do you remember?”
She hesitated.
“Running and I saw those people killing a old man.”
I said nothing.
“I also remember hearing people behind me.”
Her voice became quieter.
I watched her carefully.
“And then I ran into you.” She said
“Yes.” I answered
She looked at me.
“You looked so angry.”
I almost smiled.
“I was.”
“Why?”
“Because you were about to be killed.”
She frowned.
“You didn't even know me.”
“I know.”
“Then why did you care?”
I looked at her.
Because I had seen the fear in her eyes.
Because I knew what was behind her.
Because I couldn't leave her there.
But I couldn't tell her all of that.
Not yet.
“Because you needed help.”
She studied my face.
“That's all?”
I held her gaze.
“For now.”
She looked away.
I noticed the faint smile on her lips.
For some reason, that made something in my chest loosen.
Then James spoke.
“Liam.”
I turned.
He was standing near the window.
“We should go back.”
“Why?” I asked
He looked toward the grounds.
“Security just called.”
My expression hardened.
“What happened?”
“They saw movement near the front gate.”
Ada immediately looked at me.
My stomach tightened.
The car.
The one that had stopped outside earlier.
I hadn't forgotten it.
And judging by James's expression, neither had he.
“Let's go.”
We headed back toward the main hall.
Ada stayed beside me.
I could feel her becoming nervous again.
When we reached the entrance, one of the guards approached.
“Sir.”
“What did you see?”
“A vehicle.”
“Where?”
“Across the road from the main gate.”
My eyes narrowed.
“Is it still there?”
“No, sir.”
“How long was it there?”
“About five minutes.”
James looked at me.
“Same as before.”
I nodded.
Ada looked between us.
“Is it the vehicle that brought a letter?”
I didn't answer immediately.
She noticed.
“Liam.”
I turned toward her.
“Yes.”
Her expression changed.
“You didn't tell me.”
She looked toward the gates.
“Do you think they're still watching me?”
I didn't want to lie.
“Yes.”
Her face fell.
I stepped closer.
“But watching you doesn't mean they can reach you.”
She looked at me.
“How can you be so calm?”
“I'm not calm.”
That surprised her.
I continued.
“I'm angry.”
“Why?”
“Because someone thinks they can walk into my house, get close to you, and leave without consequences.”
Her eyes softened.
I realized what I'd said.
I looked away.
James gave me a knowing look.
I ignored him.
One of the guards suddenly spoke.
“Sir, there's something else.”
I turned.
“What?”
“The vehicle was captured on the outer camera.”
“Show me.”
We moved into the security room..
The footage appeared on the monitor.
The car was dark.
Its windows were tinted.
The image wasn't clear enough to see the driver.
But I recognized the vehicle.
My jaw tightened.
James leaned closer.
“That's definitely the same one.”
Ada stood behind us.
“Can you see the number plate?”
The guard zoomed in.
The image became blurry.
“No, ma'am.”
I stared at the screen..
Something about the car bothered me..
Not because it was there.
Because of when it was there.
It had appeared before.
And now, after the trackers were discovered, it had returned.
Someone was watching.
But why?
Were they checking whether she was still here?
Or were they watching me?
I didn't know.
And that uncertainty was becoming unbearable.
Then my phone vibrated.
I looked at the screen.
A message.
No name.
No number saved..
Just a single line..
You can't protect her forever.
I stared at the screen.
James noticed my expression.
“What is it?”
I locked the phone immediately.
“Nothing.”
He frowned.
Ada looked at me.
She knew.
I could see it.
She stepped closer.
“Liam?”
I looked at her.
For the first time that night, I didn't have an answer ready.
Because whoever had sent that message knew exactly what I had been trying to do.
Protect her.
And they were challenging me.
I slipped the phone into my pocket.
“Go upstairs.”
Ada shook her head.
“No.”
I stared at her.
She looked frightened, but she didn't move.
“I don't want to be alone.”
Something inside me softened.
I nodded.
“Then you're staying with me.”
She nodded.
James looked at us.
“I'll increase security around the mansion.”
“Do it.”
He turned to leave.
I stopped him.
“And James?”
He looked back.
“Find out who owns that car.”
His expression became serious.
“Aye.”
He walked away.
I looked at Ada.
She was still watching me.
“What?”
“You're hiding something.”
I sighed.
“You notice too much.”
“Maybe because you hide too much.”
She wasn't wrong.
I looked toward the dark windows.
The mansion was supposed to be my fortress.
My safe place.
But tonight, it felt different.
Someone had crossed a line.
And I knew one thing for certain.
I would find them.
Not tonight.
Not before I understood what I was dealing with.
But soon.
Because whoever was watching Ada had made one mistake.
They had given me a reason to start looking.
And until I found the answers, I wasn't going to let my guard down.
Not when Ada's safety was at stake.
For now, I would watch.
I would wait.
And I would let them make the next move.
