A Different Feeling.

2003 Words
Ada’s POV I barely slept that night. The note was still hidden beneath my pillow, but somehow it felt as though the words were written across the walls of my room. WE ARE WATCHING YOU. Who were they? How had they gotten close enough to leave it? And why hadn't the mansion's security noticed anything? I turned onto my back and stared at the ceiling. Maybe I should tell Liam. I immediately shook the thought away. He already had enough to deal with because of me. At least, that's what I kept telling myself. I finally gave up trying to sleep and got out of bed. After taking a shower and getting dressed, I stepped into the hallway. The mansion was quiet. I walked downstairs and stopped when I saw Liam standing near the large windows in the living room. He was on the phone. His expression was serious. “Check the eastern side again,” he said. “I don't want assumptions. I want confirmation.” He ended the call and turned. Our eyes met. For a moment, neither of us spoke. Then his gaze moved over my face. “You didn't sleep.” I frowned. “How do you know?” “You look tired.” I touched my face. “Wow. Good morning to you too.” A small smile appeared on his lips. It was brief, but I caught it. And strangely, it made me smile too. “Good morning,” he said. “Better.” He walked toward me. “Did you eat yesterday evening?” “Yes.” His eyebrow rose. “Are you sure?” “Yes, Liam.” “What did you eat?” He asked I opened my mouth. Then stopped. I couldn't remember. He gave me a knowing look. “You didn't eat.” “I was worried.” “About?" I looked away. “Everything.” His expression softened slightly. “You don't have to handle everything alone.” I looked back at him. There was something different about the way he said it. It wasn't the cold, controlled Liam I had become used to. It sounded genuine. I swallowed. “Why do you care so much?” His eyes remained on mine. For a second, I thought he would answer. Instead, he said, “Because you're under my protection.” I rolled my eyes. “Of course.” “What does that mean?” He asked “Nothing.” He stared at me. “You're terrible at lying.” “And you're terrible at explaining yourself.” His lips twitched. “Fair enough.” I smiled despite myself. He gestured toward the dining room. “Come. Eat.” “You really like giving orders.” “And you really like arguing.” “Maybe.” We walked toward the dining room together. For some reason, the silence between us didn't feel awkward anymore. It felt almost comfortable. And that scared me. Because I was beginning to realize something. I wasn't only becoming comfortable around Liam. I was starting to look forward to being around him. And I wasn't sure when that had happened. Maybe it was when Liam had taken me to the hospital without asking for anything in return. Maybe it was when I discovered that my mother's hospital bill had somehow been paid. Or perhaps it was simply the way he always seemed to notice the smallest things about me, even when he pretended not to care. Whatever it was, something about Liam had changed. Or maybe I was the one who had changed. I followed him into the dining room, trying to push the thought out of my mind. A large breakfast had already been prepared. I stopped when I saw the amount of food on the table. “Are you expecting ten people?” Liam pulled out a chair. “No.” “Then why is there enough food here to feed a football team?” He glanced at the table. “You need to eat.” “I do eat.” I replied back “Not properly.” I stared at him. “How do you know that?” “I've been watching.” The words slipped out so naturally that neither of us spoke for a second. My eyebrows lifted. “You've been watching me?” His expression remained calm. “I meant I noticed.” “That's not what you said.” A faint smile appeared on his face. “You're overthinking it.” “I am not.” “You are.” I sat down, folding my arms. “You're very annoying.” “And yet you followed me here.” I opened my mouth to respond, but nothing came out. Liam sat across from me. There was something about the way he looked at me that made me suddenly conscious of everything. The way I was sitting. The way my hair fell over my shoulder. Even the fact that I hadn't touched my food. I picked up a fork. “Happy?” “Very.” I took a bite. He watched me. I narrowed my eyes. “Stop staring.” “I wasn't.” “You were.” He looked away. “Fine.” I tried not to smile. But I failed. Liam noticed. “What?” “Nothing.” I replied “You're smiling.” “So?” I asked “Nothing.” For the first time since I met him, I saw something almost playful in his expression. It was strange. This man who always looked as though the weight of the world rested on his shoulders could actually joke. I wanted to see that side of him again. The thought surprised me. I quickly focused on my food. A few minutes passed before Liam spoke again. “About yesterday.” My smile disappeared. “The hospital?” He nodded. “The vehicle.” I lowered my fork. “What about it?” “It wasn't there when security checked again.” “So it was nothing?” “No.” His answer came too quickly. I looked at him. “Then what was it?” “We don't know yet.” I sighed. “So I'm still in danger.” Liam's eyes met mine. “Yes.” There was no hesitation. No attempt to soften the truth. For some reason, I appreciated that. “At least you're honest.” “I don't see the point in lying to you.” I looked down at my plate. “Some people would.” “I know.” The way he said it made me look up. His expression had changed. There was something dark behind his eyes. Something I couldn't understand. “Liam?” He blinked and the expression disappeared. “What?” “Nothing.” I hesitated. There were so many questions I wanted to ask him. Who were those men? Why did he seem to know so much about them? Why had he helped me? Why did he seem so determined to protect me? And most importantly... Why did I feel safer around him than I probably should? But before I could ask anything, James walked into the dining room. He looked between us. Then at the untouched food on Liam's plate. Then at mine. A grin spread across his face. “Well, this is interesting.” I frowned. “What?” “Breakfast together.” Liam sighed. “James.” “What?” “Don't.” James pulled out a chair. “I haven't said anything.” “You were about to.” “I was simply going to say the atmosphere is surprisingly peaceful.” I looked at Liam. “He's always like this?” “Unfortunately.” James laughed. “Don't listen to him. He'd be miserable without me.” Liam ignored him. James looked at me. “So, Ada, how's your first proper morning here?” “Better than yesterday.” “Good. Because yesterday looked like a nightmare.” “It was.” James' smile faded slightly. For a moment, the room became serious. He knew what had happened. They all did. But none of them knew everything I had seen. At least, I didn't think they did. My hand instinctively moved toward my pocket. The note was still there. WE ARE WATCHING YOU. I had kept it hidden. I still hadn't told Liam. And now, sitting across from him, I wondered if I had made the right decision. “Are you alright?” Liam asked. I quickly looked up. “Yes.” He studied me. “You're lying.” My heart skipped. “How do you always know?” “Your face.” I laughed nervously. “My face doesn't betray me.” “It does.” James looked between us again. Then he smiled at himself. I noticed. “What?” “Nothing.” “You're smiling.” “I just remembered something.” “What?” James stood. “Absolutely nothing.” He walked away before I could question him. I watched him leave. Then I looked at Liam. “Your friend is strange.” “He's worse than strange.” “I heard that,” James called from the hallway. Liam shook his head. I laughed. And for a moment, everything felt normal. No murder. No threats. No people watching me. Just breakfast. Just Liam. Just the strange warmth I felt whenever he looked at me. Then Liam's phone rang. His expression changed immediately. He answered. “Go ahead.” He listened. I watched the amusement disappear from his face. “Where?” Another pause. “I'm coming.” He ended the call and stood. “What happened?” “Nothing you need to worry about.” I frowned. “That's what people say when there's something to worry about.” He looked at me. “Stay inside.” “Liam" “I mean it, Ada.” His voice was firm. I stood too. “Where are you going?” “Security found something.” My stomach tightened. “What?” “I'll tell you when I know more.” He started walking away. Without thinking, I reached out and caught his arm. He stopped. So did I. My fingers were wrapped around his sleeve. I slowly looked up at him. He looked down at my hand. Then back at me. Neither of us moved. I suddenly became aware of how close we were. Much closer than we had ever been. My heart began beating faster. “I just...” I swallowed. “Be careful.” Something softened in his eyes. “I will.” His voice was quieter now. I released his arm. He walked toward the door. But before leaving, he turned back. “And Ada?” “Yes?” “Don't go anywhere.” I nodded. “Okay.” He left. I remained standing there, staring at the door. My fingers still felt warm where they had touched his arm. I shook my head. “What is wrong with me?” I turned toward the window. Outside, the security team was moving around the compound. Everything looked normal. Safe. But I know better now. Normal was no longer something I could trust. I reached into my pocket and pulled out the note. WE ARE WATCHING YOU. I stared at it. Then something caught my attention. A movement beyond the gate. I stepped closer to the window. There was nothing there. Only the road. Empty. I frowned. Maybe I had imagined it. I folded the note again and slipped it back into my pocket. But this time, I wasn't thinking about the people watching me. I was thinking about Liam. The way he'd looked at me. The way his voice softened when I told him to be careful. And the way my heart had reacted when I touched his arm. I didn't know what this feeling was. And I wasn't ready to give it a name. Not yet.
