The Reveal

Ahead of them, partially hidden by overgrown bushes, was a small, weathered cabin. It looked abandoned, the wood dark and the windows covered in grime. But there was a faint light coming from inside, flickering like candlelight. Her heart leaped into her throat. “That’s it,” she whispered. They approached cautiously, the crunch of leaves underfoot the only sound. She reached the door and hesitated, her hand hovering over the rough wood. She glanced at Sarah, who nodded encouragingly. Taking a deep breath, she knocked. For a moment, there was silence, and she wondered if anyone was even inside. But then, she heard footsteps approaching, and the door creaked open. Lucas stood there, his amber eyes widening in surprise as he saw she and Sarah. He looked different from how she remembered—his hair more tousled, his expression more guarded. But those eyes, the ones that had captivated her from the moment they met, were unmistakable. “Clara?” He said, his voice a mixture of confusion and caution. “What are you doing here?” She swallowed, her heart pounding. “I… I needed to find you. There’s something I need to tell you.” His gaze flicked to Sarah, then back to her. He stepped aside, opening the door wider. “Come in,” he said, his tone cautious. She and Sarah stepped inside, the cabin’s interior dimly lit by a few candles scattered around. It was small, cozy even, with a fireplace on one side and a simple bed on the other. There were books stacked in one corner, and the air smelled faintly of wood smoke. He closed the door, turning to face them. “What’s going on?” She took a deep breath, steeling herself. “I’m pregnant, Lucas. And… it’s yours.” For a moment, there was silence. His eyes widened, his face a mask of shock. He opened his mouth to say something, then closed it again, clearly struggling to process the information. “When?” he finally asked, his voice low. She swallowed. “From the night we… the night we… the night we were together.” Her voice trembled slightly, the words feeling heavy as she spoke them aloud. His expression was unreadable. He ran a hand through his hair, turning away from them and pacing the small cabin. He seemed to be struggling to find the right words. Finally, he stopped, facing them with a look of disbelief and something else—something that looked a lot like fear. “Are you sure?” he asked, his voice barely more than a whisper. She nodded, her eyes never leaving his. “Yes, I’ve taken multiple tests. There’s no doubt about it.” He exhaled sharply, as if the air had been punched out of him. He rubbed his hands over his face, then dropped them to his sides, his gaze locking onto hers. “there’s something I need to tell you,” he said, his tone more serious than she had ever heard it. “Something important.” Her heart skipped a beat. She had expected questions, maybe even disbelief or anger. But the look in his eyes was something she hadn’t anticipated. “What is it?” she asked, her voice trembling with the uncertainty of the unknown. He looked at Sarah, his eyes narrowing slightly. “Can we talk alone?” Sarah glanced at her, then back at him. “If she wants me to stay, I’m staying,” she said, crossing her arms. She nodded in agreement. “Sarah can stay. She knows everything.” He hesitated, then nodded. He seemed to be gathering his thoughts, searching for the right words. “That night we met… I wasn’t entirely honest with you. About who I am.” She frowned, her mind racing. “What do you mean?” He took a deep breath, the weight of his secret heavy on his shoulders. “I’m not… like other people. I’m a… a werewolf.” For a moment, there was stunned silence. The word hung in the air, surreal and impossible. She blinked, trying to process what she had just heard. She glanced at Sarah, whose mouth had fallen open in shock, then back at him. “What?” She finally managed to say, her voice barely more than a whisper. His expression was grave, his eyes pleading for understanding. “I know how it sounds. But it’s the truth. I didn’t want to tell you, not until I knew you better. It’s not something I share lightly.” She stared at him, her mind reeling. This couldn’t be real. Werewolves were creatures of myths and legends, stories told to scare children. They weren’t… real. But as she looked into his eyes, she saw something that made her believe he wasn’t lying. There was a truth there, something ancient and deep, and it terrified her. “You’re serious,” she said, her voice shaky. He nodded. “Yes. I didn’t mean to drag you into this, Clara. I didn’t expect… this.” He gestured vaguely toward her stomach, his expression a mixture of confusion and wonder. “I’ve never heard of a human becoming pregnant from someone like me. It’s… unprecedented.” She finally found her voice, though it was shaky and unsure. “Wait… are you saying that she is carrying a werewolf’s child?” He nodded again, his expression somber. “I think so. If what you’re telling me is true, then it’s the only explanation.” She felt like the room was spinning, her legs suddenly weak. She stumbled back, finding the edge of a chair and sinking into it. Her mind was a storm of thoughts and emotions, fear and disbelief clashing violently with each other. This couldn’t be happening. It was impossible. “Why didn’t you tell me?” she asked, her voice raw with hurt. “Why did you keep this from me?” He looked pained. “I didn’t want to scare you. I liked you. I didn’t want you to look at me like… like this. Like I’m some kind of monster.” She shook her head, tears welling up in her eyes. “You should have told me. I deserved to know. Now… now I don’t know what to think.” He moved toward her, his expression pleading. “I’m still the same person. The same person you spent that night with. I just… I have a side of me that’s different. But I would never hurt you. You have to believe that.”Sarah stepped in, her voice stronger now, protective. “Okay, so what happens now? Hannah’s pregnant, and you’re saying the baby is… different? What does that mean?” He hesitated, clearly unsure. “I don’t know. I’ve never heard of this happening before. But we need to be careful. There are… people who wouldn’t understand. People who might want to hurt you, or the baby.” Clara’s head snapped up, her eyes widening. “What do you mean? Who would want to hurt us?” His face darkened. “There are others like me. And there are those who hunt us, who see us as threats. If they find out about you, about the baby… we could all be in danger.” A chill ran down her spine, the reality of the situation settling over her like a dark cloud. She had thought finding him would bring clarity, answers. Instead, it had only led to more questions, more uncertainty. “What do we do?” she asked, her voice barely more than a whisper. He knelt in front of her, taking her hands in his. His touch was warm, reassuring. “We stay hidden. I’ll protect you, both of you. But we have to be careful. No one can know about this, not until we understand what’s happening.” Sarah looked between them, her expression firm. “I’ll help. Whatever you need, I’m here. You’re not doing this alone.” She looked at her friend, tears of gratitude in her eyes. “Thank you, Sarah.” He nodded, his expression grateful. “Thank you, Sarah. This isn’t going to be easy, but we’ll figure it out.” She took a deep breath, trying to steady her racing heart. The fear and confusion were still there, but so was a strange sense of relief. She wasn’t alone. Whatever happened next, they would face it together. As the night wore on, they talked—about his world, about the dangers they might face, and about the life growing inside her. It was overwhelming, but with each word, the reality of the situation became a little clearer. There were still so many unknowns, so many things that could go wrong. But for the first time since that night, she felt like she was taking control of her future. But she knew one thing for sure: she would do whatever it takes to protect her child, to protect the life she had never expected but now couldn’t imagine living without.
