Beneath The Surface

*Clara’s Apartment, Two Days Later* She stood near her living room window, her gaze fixed outside, though her mind was far from the view. Her thoughts spiraled around multiple revelations: Lucas's truth, her unexpected pregnancy, and the looming dangers of their reality. It felt overwhelming, like standing at the edge of a cliff, watching the ground give way beneath her.A sharp knock at the door broke her thoughts. Startled by the knock from the door, she turned and made her way over to check who was at the door. “Hey,” Sarah said softly, stepping into the apartment. “How are you holding up?” She shrugged, an attempt at a smile failing miserably. “I don’t know. It all feels like a nightmare that I can't wake up from.”Understanding filled Sarah’s eyes as she stepped closer. “I can’t imagine how tough this is for you. But we’ll figure it out.”Taking a deep breath, she ran a hand through her hair,. “I just don’t know where to start. Werewolves? Danger? It really does feel unreal—like something out of a movie.”Sarah’s hand landed gently on her shoulder. “One step at a time, okay? Right now, we need to focus on your safety and figuring out what this means for… well, for your baby.” She nodded slowly, reassured by her friend's presence. “You’re right. I need to be strong. For the baby, and for myself.”“Speaking of the baby,” Sarah said, perching herself on the couch, “have you talked to Lucas again? We need to know more about this whole werewolf thing. What does it mean for you? For the baby? Is there someone who knows more than he does?”She settled beside Sarah, feeling a mix of nervousness and resolve. “He’s coming over tonight. I told him we need answers. I think he’s just as scared as we are.”Sarah’s brows furrowed slightly. “Do you trust him?”The question made her pause. “I... want to. He didn’t have to tell me the truth, but he did. I saw something in his eyes, Sarah; he’s not lying. Still, a part of me is scared. What if there’s more he isn’t telling us?”“Feeling scared is normal,” Sarah said gently. “But remember, you’re in charge of your own story. If you think he’s hiding something, ask for answers. We need to know everything to keep you and the baby safe.”She felt her resolve strengthen at Sarah's words. “You’re right. I can’t just sit back and hope for the best. I have to take control.”Before she could say more, another knock echoed through the apartment. Her heart raced as she guessed who it was. Steeling herself, she took a deep breath and opened the door. There stood Lucas, a mix of nerves and relief washed over his face upon seeing her. “Hey,”he said softly, almost hesitantly. “Can I come in?”She stepped aside, letting him in, while he shared a brief nod with Sarah, who offered him a cautious, yet warm, smile.Looking directly at her, his brow furrowed with concern. “How are you feeling?” “Managing,” she replied, trying to keep her tone steady. “But we need to talk. We need to understand what being a werewolf means for me, for the baby… everything.”He nodded gravely and took a seat on the couch. She and Sarah joined him, their tension palpable in the room.“I’ll tell you everything I can,” he began. “But you have to understand, even I’m not sure of all the answers. My kind… we don’t usually have children with humans. It’s never happened before, at least not that I know of.”Her heart sank. “So, you don’t know what this means? For our baby?”His expression darkened as he shook his head. “No, I don’t. But I’ll look into it. I can reach out to others; there may be someone who has heard of something like this.”Sarah leaned in, her eyes sharp. “What about the danger you mentioned? You hinted that there are people who wouldn’t understand this world and might want to harm her and the baby. Who are they?”“The hunters,” he explained, his voice low and serious. “They view my kind as a threat and have been hunting us for centuries. If they find out about you, about the baby, they’ll see it as something that needs to be eradicated.”Her heart raced as fear gripped her insides. “So what can we do? How do we protect ourselves?”His gaze softened, filled with urgency and determination. “I will protect you. I’ll do whatever it takes to keep you safe. But we need to stay cautious. Until we fully understand what we’re dealing with, no one can know about this—not yet.”Sarah crossed her arms, instinctively protective. “And what about you, Lucas? You’re part of this too now. If we’re going to trust you, it’s essential that you’re completely honest with us. No more secrets.”He met Sarah’s fierce gaze and nodded earnestly. “I promise, no more secrets. I’m here to help. I want to keep you both safe, whatever it takes.”Clara studied his face, searching his eyes for any flicker of deceit. All she saw was sincerity, tempered with fear of the unknown. “Okay," she said finally, locking eyes with him. "We’ll figure this out together. But we must be smart about everything.”He nodded. “Agreed. I will start researching and see if I can find someone who knows more than I do. For now, we lay low—stay quiet. Everyone must remain in the dark about the baby.”Relief mixed with anxiety settled in her chest. At least they had a plan moving forward, which felt better than the disorientation of feeling lost in a dark abyss.Suddenly, Sarah's phone buzzed, breaking the tense atmosphere. She fished it out of her pocket, her expression shifting to alarm as she read the screen. “Uh, guys? We might have a problem.” Clara’s heart thudded in her chest. “What is it?”Sarah held her phone up, displaying a news article with a headline that screamed disaster: **“Mysterious Animal Attacks Reported Near City Outskirts. Authorities Baffled.”**Eyes widening, clara felt a chill at the base of her spine. “Animal attacks? What kind of animals?”Sarah scrolled through the article, her brows knitting as she absorbed the details. “It doesn’t clarify. Just that people have reported strange attacks, like something large is roaming about. They have no idea what it is.”His face grew grave. “It could be one of my kind. If there’s a rogue wolf out there, it could bring unwanted attention to us. We need to tread carefully.” Clara swallowed hard, the implications unfolding in her mind. “What do we do now?”He took a moment before responding, his face tense with thought. “I’ll look into it. I’ll find out what’s going on. If it’s indeed a rogue, I will deal with it.”Sarah raised an eyebrow, skepticism in her voice. “And how do you plan to do that? You can’t just walk around asking questions about werewolves.”His gaze remained steady, a quiet resolve in his posture. “I have my ways of uncovering the truth. Trust me; I can handle it.”She met his gaze, her eyes reflecting a mixture of trepidation and gratitude. “Just be careful. I don’t want anything to happen to you.”He offered her a faint, reassuring smile. “I’ll be fine. That’s a promise.”He stood, preparing to leave as tension thickened in the air. “I’ll check back in later to update you on what I find. In the meantime, keep your doors locked and don’t draw attention to yourselves.”Both women nodded, aware of the gravity in his words. As he stepped out and closed the door behind him, Clara released a shuddering breath. The fear was still there, lurking in the background, but knowing he was out there, taking action on their behalf, offered her a sliver of comfort.Sarah turned to Clara, her expression serious. “We need to be ready for whatever happens. Promise me you’ll be careful.”“I promise,” Clara said.
