He Who Holds The Crown

➳ ➳ ➳ The loud menacing growl behind her made her jump and stop in her tracks. She stood still, wary of her surroundings, looking through the trees and trying to see, but the moon was high, casting more shadows and the street lights from the main path were too far. The cold wind nipped her bare arms and made her shiver. There was it again, that uneasy feeling, like someone was following her. But she had enough, even in the light of day, in town, with a lot of people around her. She still felt it. The constant fear of being watched, it was waiting to catch her off guard and strike when the moment comes. She was sick of watching her steps, the anticipation for something bad to happen to her. She was done hiding behind walls, now she was ready to face it head on. This forest that once was her safe haven, turned dangerous and dark. Her intuition tells her that those reported cases of sighted wild wolves weren’t just that. There was something sinister behind it. It was all too much of a coincidence, and she was here to find answers to it. Looking around again, she didn’t notice anything. Nothing was amiss. Everything seemed normal. But there was that heavy weight in the air, subtle but not to those that looked closer. It was silent, too quiet. Blinking, she started walking again, the crunch of dried leaves and heavy booted footsteps on the firm soil echoed in her ears. It was a foolish decision for her to walk alone on this trail again, but she had something to prove, not to anyone but herself. Another loud growl and her hands immediately went to her bag. Searching for the bear spray that she bought yesterday morning. It wasn’t a g*n, but surely it was enough to subdue a wolf or a human. But she stopped fumbling when she felt him Like she always did. That tug from an invisible ribbon that tied him to her. Exhaling loudly, she turned around, nervousness filled her as her senses clouded with the unshed tears of fear. There he was, surrounded by the heavy trunks and canopy of leaves. Crouched on his knees, right next to a wolf which was on its back, blood trailing down its brown fur and coating the grass beneath it. That moment she knew that she shouldn't fear him. He saved her that night, for reasons she couldn’t even fathom. But that’s what she felt. Safe. ➳ ➳ ➳ -originally written the summer of 2014 He Who Holds the Crown © 2021, Mary Jobbele THIS BOOK INCLUDING ALL CHAPTERS AND ASSOCIATED CONTENT ARE COPYRIGHTED.
