The Moon goddess

1319 Words
Griffin's POV “Griffin, it looks like there is a body floating down there, just around that bend in the river”. My Beta, Felixstowe raises alarm. I look ahead and realise he was right. There was definitely somebody in that river. And I don’t know what it was but something in me made me jump into the water with the urge to save whoever was in there. When I got closer, I realised the body is that of a female. She was barely breathing and it looked like she might swing both legs over the threshold of life if I don't get her to land quickly. May the moon goddess be with her. Bringing her back to shore, I tried to resuscitate her but was not sure she's going to survive; her body looked weak and she felt as cold as ice but I have this strong pull to save her, she can't die. My beast keeps insisting I find a way to bring her back. So maybe she was someone important. A few more chest and mouth resuscitation, she coughs out water and relief surges through my body. Oh, thank you moon goddess. Tonight was not supposed to go this way. I came from Blood Moon Isle, an Isle close to this one when’re my Beta and I came on a fishing trip. I needed a break from all the disappointment and everyone staring at me like I was some kind of animal or something much dangerous to the territory. When I was 18, I was young and stupid. So one day, my actions resulted in something that caused a lot of trouble and as a consequence, a witch cursed me with bloodlust. Every full moon my beast awakens and hungers for blood and destruction, until he is satisfied. Whenever I wake up the next morning covered in blood, I just know that many innocent lives were taken in my killing haze. It was bad and scary. I had to be locked up on full moons like a criminal and even that wasn't enough because my beast was too strong for chains, and his bloodlust only adds to his strength. The only cure is finding my true mate. I have searched for more than five years but to no avail. I thought I found her yesterday but she wasn't the one. I came here for a distraction, just to find this girl who my conscience won't let me leave like this. The only reason people haven't hunted me down is because I am a good alpha to them so everyone is trying to find my mate to put an end and cure this wretched curse. “Hurry, let's take her to our healer”, I say with authority. I carried her on my horse and abandoned the boat. I rode as fast as possible trying to get to our Isle. She was breathing now, yes, but she wasn’t conscious. She looked so beautiful and I don't know how she ended up in the sea. “Is this our mate?” I ask my beast wanting to know why I am already so drawn to this woman “I doubt, but you must protect her”. My wolf says and I agree with my wolf I got to our Isle in record time, all thanks to the moon goddess for my riding skills and the short distance between our Isles. Reaching the healer's house, I bang on her door until she comes out. She opened the door with a crack. When she sees me with the woman, she widens her eyes, “My lord, what happened?” She asked, collecting the girl who was barely breathing and placing her on a bed. “I found her floating on the waters in the Moonlit region.” She nods, deciding it would be wise not to question why I went to another Isle and starts preparing her elixir, doing different things I'll never understand. When she starts rubbing something on the woman's body she starts shivering, which is definitely the most responsive she has been since I found her. The healer gives her a few things and the woman calms and her shivering stops. The healer turns to me, “She will live, thank the moon goddess because this is definitely a miracle.” I smile and thank the healer. Offering her some payment, she humbly declines. I insist and she shakes her head, saying “You are my Alpha. It is an honour for you to need my services,” she says with a nod of respect. I dip my head to pay back the gesture and withdraw the payment, offering her my gratitude in its stead. “When she is strong enough, I expect her to be sent to my house. Let your personal maids bring her to me. And also, take good care of her, healer. I will visit tomorrow morning” I say with authority. “Until then my lord”, she says with a bow. She listens and pays heed to my words, in obedience to my leadership. My pack admires strength, no one can compete with me and survive. I earned the right to be considered an alpha of the blood moon pack. Even though many secretly hate me because they consider me a cruel murderer and that I use the curse as an excuse, I always have to watch my back and no trust no one. And that was what has kept me alive till today. Getting to my palace, I walk straight to my chambers, which is a room decorated to my taste, with weapons hidden everywhere in case I need to fight. I rarely ever need weapons though my beast is a savage and very strong, especially when he is angry. Settling in on a sofa, I think about that girl. Did she try to kill herself? Was she pushed? But who would want to kill such a precious looking person? Looks can be deceiving but instincts never lie and my instinct says she is a good person who was at the wrong place at the wrong time. I ponder more on the subject, my puzzlement evident on my facial muscles. With a sigh, I push it from my thoughts and try to relax and get some rest. All the answers to my question will come in due time but for now, I need to prepare for the worst. I hear a loud knock which brings me back to reality. “Who is it?” I am annoyed by the interruption. “Alpha, there is important news”, Felixstowe says, sounding distressed. My Beta is a calm and level headed man so when he panics like this, I know it must be serious. “Come in and explain”. He enters quickly and closes the door. In quick strides, he is next to me and begins speaking, “The pack council had a meeting in our absence and they have decided that if you can not find a mate to lift this curse, you will be killed”. I shot to my feet in shock. How dare they conspire against me? “They want me gone?” Felixstowe nods. “They feel threatened by your curse and want a stable alpha, we need to find a mate for you quickly and if we don't find one, we must prepare for an assassination or worse, war.” This is the worst news I could possibly have gotten today. What did I do to deserve all this? The whole cause of this curse isn't even fully my fault and I wish they could see that; but I also know that I will carry the secret of what truly happened to my grave or till my curse is lifted. Moon goddess please save me from this torment.
