Chapter Six I was chasing shadows into the dark. As it turned out, I ended up at a bar anyway. I walked into the restaurant occupying the ground floor of my apartment building as the lunch rush was thinning out. The owner, my landlord, and friend Amir, was out of sight. There were only two other people at the bar as I took my favorite stool. The bartender on duty–Caroline, an interminably upbeat brunette with a cockney accent so thick that I wondered if it was fake—had come to know me well. Without even asking what I wanted, she fixed me my drink of choice—Scotch on the Rocks.
