Five Minutes to Decide

1409 Words
The room went silent after the voice outside gave them five minutes. Sophia looked at Daniel. Neither of them needed to say what they were thinking. Whoever stood outside knew about the key. And more frighteningly, he knew about Amelia. Daniel checked the time on his phone. Four minutes and forty seconds. "We need to leave," he said. Sophia frowned. "Through the front door?" "No." He looked toward the kitchen. "My mother said there was another way out." Sophia's mother immediately shook her head. "Not anymore." Daniel turned. "What do you mean?" "The back passage was sealed years ago." Sophia looked toward the front door. "Then what are we going to do?" Daniel remained quiet for a moment. Then he reached for the silver key. "We give them something they want." Sophia stared at him. "What?" "The key." Her mother immediately interrupted. "No." Daniel looked at her. "If they believe we have the key, they'll keep coming after us." "And if they get it?" "They won't." Sophia looked at Daniel carefully. "You have a plan." "I have part of one." He took the silver key and walked toward the door. Sophia grabbed his arm. "Daniel." He turned. "Trust me." She stared into his eyes. "I do." He gave her a small nod. Then he walked downstairs. Sophia followed. When Daniel reached the front door, he stopped. "Five minutes aren't over yet," he called. The man outside answered calmly. "You have three minutes." Daniel looked through the glass. "I'll give you the key." Sophia's mother whispered behind him. "Daniel, don't." The stranger laughed softly. "Good decision." Daniel unlocked the door. But before opening it, he looked at Sophia. She understood immediately. He wasn't going to surrender. He was buying time. Daniel opened the door slightly. A man stood outside. He wore a dark jacket and kept his hands visible. "Where is the key?" Daniel held it up. "First, tell me where Amelia is." The man's expression changed. "You are in no position to negotiate." Daniel smiled. "Then you don't need this." He closed his fingers around the key. The man stepped forward. "Give it to me." "No." "Daniel." "You threatened Sophia." The man's eyes shifted toward her. "And now you're threatening her again." Daniel's voice became colder. "Tell me where Amelia is." The stranger smiled. "She's alive." Sophia stepped forward. "Where?" "I'll tell you after I have the key." Daniel shook his head. "Not enough." The man looked at the clock on the wall through the open door. "You have two minutes." Daniel looked directly into his eyes. "Then we both have a problem." The stranger frowned. "Why?" "Because you need the key more than I need you." For the first time, the man's confidence disappeared. Daniel closed the door. Sophia looked at him. "Who was he?" "I don't know." "Then why did he look afraid?" Daniel smiled faintly. "Because we finally have something they need." His mother came closer. "Daniel, you shouldn't have confronted him." "I had to." She shook her head. "You don't understand who you're dealing with." Daniel looked at her. "Then help me understand." She hesitated. Then she spoke. "That man works for Adrian." Sophia's expression hardened. "Of course." Daniel looked toward the window. "How did Adrian know about the key?" His mother didn't answer. "Mom." She lowered her eyes. "I told him." Daniel froze. "You told Adrian?" "Years ago." "About the key?" "No." She looked at Sophia. "About the box." Daniel's expression changed. "You knew about the safe deposit box before we did." "Yes." "Why didn't you tell me?" "Because I was trying to protect you." Daniel turned away. The same words again. Protection. Lies. Secrets. He was beginning to hate all three. Sophia gently touched his arm. "Daniel." He looked at her. "This isn't the moment to fight with your mother." He nodded. "You're right." Then his phone vibrated. A message had arrived. It contained a photograph of a small house near the sea. Below it was an address. And one sentence: YOU HAVE THIRTY MINUTES. Sophia read it. "Is that the house?" Daniel nodded. "The one my father mentioned." His mother stared at the photograph. "No." Daniel looked at her. "What?" "That's not Robert's house." "Then whose is it?" She whispered, "Amelia's." Sophia felt a chill. "She's there?" "I don't know." Daniel looked at the clock. Thirty minutes. He grabbed his jacket. "We're going." His mother stepped in front of him. "No." Daniel stopped. "This time, you're not stopping me." She looked at him with tears in her eyes. "If you go there without understanding what Adrian wants, you may lose Amelia forever." Daniel's voice softened. "Then tell me." She hesitated. "What?" "What does Adrian want?" His mother looked down. "The original trust agreement." Daniel frowned. "The one with Amelia's name?" "Yes." "Why is it so important?" "Because whoever controls that document controls the company." Sophia stared at her. "So Adrian has spent twenty years trying to control a company that isn't even his." His mother nodded. "Not just the company." "What else?" "Everything connected to it." Daniel understood. The money. The secret accounts. The hidden companies. The false identities. All of it had been part of the same plan. Adrian didn't want money. He wanted power. And Amelia had been used as the key to obtaining it. Daniel looked at Sophia. "We need to move." They left the house. This time, they took Sophia's car. Daniel sat in the passenger seat while Sophia drove. The road toward the coast seemed longer than before. Neither spoke for several minutes. Then Sophia said quietly, "Are you afraid?" Daniel looked out the window. "Yes." "Of finding Amelia?" "Of what happens after we find her." Sophia glanced at him. "You mean our relationship." He looked at her. "I'm afraid our families may never forgive each other." Sophia smiled sadly. "Maybe forgiveness isn't something we can force." Daniel took her hand. "Would you still choose me if they never did?" She didn't hesitate. "Yes." His eyes softened. "I would choose you too." They reached the address with seven minutes remaining. The house stood alone near the sea. No cars. No lights. The front door was open. Sophia slowed down. "That's not normal." "No." They entered carefully. The house was empty. A chair had been knocked over. A cup lay broken on the floor. Then Daniel saw the photograph on the table. It showed a young girl. Amelia. There was another photograph beside it. This one showed Robert holding her. On the back was a handwritten message. HE CAME HERE BEFORE HE DISAPPEARED. Daniel stared at it. "My father was here." Sophia looked around. "Then maybe he left something." They searched the rooms. In the bedroom, Sophia noticed a loose floorboard. "Daniel." He knelt beside it. Underneath was a small wooden box. The silver key fit perfectly. Inside was a letter. Daniel opened it. His father's handwriting. He read the first line. "If you're reading this, Amelia is closer than you think." Sophia leaned beside him. Daniel continued. "She was never taken from us." He stopped. "What?" Sophia looked at him. "Keep reading." Daniel's hands began to shake. "Amelia was hidden." "By whom?" Sophia asked. Daniel read the final sentence. "By the person you have trusted most all your life." Sophia looked at him. Daniel slowly lowered the letter. His face had gone pale. "My mother." Behind them, the front door suddenly slammed shut. A woman's voice came from the darkness. "Yes." They turned. Daniel's mother stood in the doorway. And for the first time, she wasn't crying. She was terrified. "Daniel," she whispered, "you were never supposed to find this." He stared at her. "Where is Amelia?" His mother closed her eyes. Then she gave the answer he had been searching for all his life. "She's alive." Daniel stepped forward. "Where?" His mother looked toward Sophia. "With her father." Sophia's heart stopped. "My father?" Her mother nodded. "Michael has been protecting Amelia for twenty years." Daniel and Sophia looked at each other. The past had finally connected them in a way neither had expected. But before either could ask another question, the lights went out. A man's voice came from somewhere inside the house. "Thank you for finding the truth for me." Adrian. Daniel immediately grabbed Sophia's hand. The front door locked. And from somewhere upstairs came the sound of footsteps. Someone was coming down. The thirty minutes were over. And now the real confrontation was beginning.
