Thomas drove without saying a word.
The road back to the city was almost empty, but the silence inside the car felt heavier than the night outside.
Sophia sat beside Daniel in the back seat.
She was staring at the small recorder in Daniel's hand.
His father's voice had changed everything.
Robert Carter was alive.
He had been taken.
And someone close to both families had been involved.
Sophia finally broke the silence.
"Daniel."
He looked at her.
"What?"
"Do you trust Thomas?"
Daniel glanced toward the front seat.
"I don't know anymore."
Thomas heard him but said nothing.
Sophia lowered her voice.
"He knew someone was going to the lighthouse."
"I know."
"He also received a threatening message tonight."
"I saw it."
"Then why is he helping us?"
Daniel looked at the recorder.
"Maybe because he feels guilty."
Sophia turned toward the window.
"Or maybe because he wants us to find something."
Daniel studied her face.
"You've been quiet."
"I'm thinking."
"About what?"
She looked at him.
"About us."
Daniel's expression softened.
"Us?"
"Yes."
She hesitated.
"Everything started with a job. Then dinner. Then secrets. Now we're running from people who seem to know everything about our families."
Daniel smiled faintly.
"You make it sound complicated."
"It is complicated."
"Maybe."
He reached for her hand.
"But I know one thing."
"What?"
"I don't regret meeting you."
Sophia looked down at their hands.
"Even after all this?"
"Especially after all this."
She smiled.
For a few seconds, the fear disappeared.
But when they reached the city, Daniel received a message.
He opened it.
His face changed.
Sophia noticed.
"What is it?"
He handed her the phone.
The message contained a photograph.
It showed Sophia and Daniel holding hands inside the car.
Underneath it were six words.
YOU SHOULD NOT TRUST EACH OTHER.
Sophia stared at the screen.
"They were watching us."
Daniel nodded.
Thomas suddenly pulled the car to the side of the road.
"What happened?" Daniel asked.
Thomas looked into the rearview mirror.
"We need to get out."
"Why?"
"Because the car behind us has followed us for fifteen minutes."
Daniel looked through the rear window.
A dark sedan was parked several meters behind them.
Thomas turned off the engine.
"Don't move."
The sedan remained still.
Then its headlights switched off.
Sophia whispered,
"Who are they?"
Thomas didn't answer.
Daniel reached for her hand.
"Stay with me."
Thomas waited nearly a minute.
Then the sedan moved.
It passed them without stopping.
Thomas watched until it disappeared.
"Now we go."
They continued driving.
No one spoke again until they reached Sophia's apartment.
Daniel got out with her.
Thomas remained inside the car.
"You aren't coming?"
Thomas shook his head.
"Not tonight."
Daniel frowned.
"Why?"
"Because someone needs to know where I am."
Sophia stepped closer.
"What does that mean?"
Thomas looked at her.
"It means the person watching us may already know more than we think."
He drove away.
Daniel watched the car disappear.
Sophia unlocked her apartment.
The moment they entered, something felt wrong.
The room was exactly as she had left it.
But one drawer was open.
Daniel noticed it immediately.
"Did you leave this open?"
"No."
He approached carefully.
Inside were old photographs.
Someone had moved them.
Sophia picked up one of the pictures.
Her mother was standing outside a hospital.
Beside her was Robert.
Sophia stared at it.
"This is impossible."
Daniel took the photograph.
"What year?"
Sophia checked the date written on the back.
Three years ago.
Daniel looked at her.
"Your mother saw my father three years ago."
Sophia nodded slowly.
"So she lied too."
Before they could continue, they heard a key turning in the front door.
Sophia froze.
"My mother."
The door opened.
Her mother stepped inside carrying a small bag.
She stopped when she saw Daniel.
"What are you doing here?"
Daniel placed the photograph on the table.
"We need answers."
Her mother looked at the photograph.
Her face immediately changed.
"Where did you get that?"
"From your drawer."
She closed the door.
"Daniel, you shouldn't be here."
"Why?"
"Because you are putting yourself in danger."
"I've already been in danger."
His voice became sharper.
"My father is alive."
Sophia's mother lowered her eyes.
Daniel stepped closer.
"You knew."
"I knew he survived."
"You saw him."
She remained silent.
"You saw him three years ago."
Her mother looked at Sophia.
"I didn't want you to know."
Sophia's voice trembled.
"Why?"
"Because your father asked me not to tell you."
"My father?"
"No."
She shook her head.
"Your father was gone by then."
Sophia stared at her.
"Then who asked you?"
Her mother looked at Daniel.
"Robert."
Silence filled the room.
Daniel's face hardened.
"He contacted you."
"Yes."
"Where?"
"I can't tell you."
"Why?"
"Because I promised."
Daniel laughed bitterly.
"Everyone keeps making promises that destroy our lives."
His words broke something in her.
His mother-in-law's eyes filled with tears.
"You don't understand what Robert was trying to protect you from."
"Then tell me."
She shook her head.
"Not here."
Sophia moved closer.
"Mom, enough."
Her voice was quiet, but firm.
"You've protected me my whole life by hiding the truth. I don't want protection anymore. I want the truth."
Her mother looked at her daughter for a long moment.
Then she sat down.
"All right."
Daniel and Sophia remained standing.
"Three years ago, Robert contacted me."
"Where was he?"
"He was in another country."
"Why did he contact you?"
"He wanted me to deliver a message to your father."
Daniel's heart tightened.
"My father was already missing."
"Yes."
"What message?"
Her mother hesitated.
"He said the person who betrayed them was not David."
Daniel stared at her.
"Then who?"
"He didn't give me a name."
"Why not?"
"Because he said the wrong person knowing could get you killed."
Sophia whispered,
"Did he mention Adrian?"
Her mother nodded.
"Yes."
"What did he say?"
"He said Adrian wasn't working alone."
Daniel's eyes narrowed.
"With whom?"
"I don't know."
"You must know something."
Her mother looked down.
"I know Adrian had access to private information about both families."
"What kind?"
"Personal records. Bank accounts. Addresses. Travel documents."
Sophia's face went pale.
"He could find anyone."
"Yes."
"Then how did Robert stay hidden?"
Her mother looked toward the window.
"Someone was protecting him."
"Who?"
She didn't answer.
Daniel stepped forward.
"Who was protecting my father?"
Her mother's voice was barely audible.
"The person you were told never to trust."
Daniel froze.
"David?"
She shook her head.
"No."
"Then who?"
A knock came at the door.
Everyone turned.
Three slow knocks.
Sophia's mother immediately stood.
"Nobody move."
The knock came again.
Daniel quietly reached for his phone.
Sophia moved closer to him.
Her mother walked toward the door.
"Who is it?"
No answer.
Then a voice came from outside.
"I know you're in there."
Sophia recognized it.
She whispered,
"Adrian."
Her mother stepped backward.
Daniel looked at Sophia.
The fear in her eyes told him this was no longer just about the past.
Someone had followed them home.
The doorknob began to turn.
Sophia grabbed Daniel's hand.
He squeezed it.
"I'm here."
The lock clicked.
Her mother whispered,
"Whatever happens, don't let him take that photograph."
Daniel looked at the photograph in his hand.
"What photograph?"
Her mother stared at him.
"The one Robert left behind."
Daniel froze.
She hadn't meant to say that.
Sophia looked at her mother.
"Robert left a photograph?"
Her mother nodded slowly.
"And that photograph is the reason Adrian has been searching for him all these years."
The door suddenly opened.
But no one stood outside.
Only a small envelope lay on the doorstep.
Daniel walked toward it.
Inside was a single photograph.
He turned it over.
His face went pale.
It showed Robert standing beside Adrian.
But between them stood someone Daniel knew better than anyone.
His own mother.
On the back were four words:
SHE KNOWS WHERE HE IS.
Daniel looked at Sophia.
Then at the photograph.
For the first time, he wondered whether the person he trusted most had been hiding the biggest secret of all.
