The choice she couldn't escape

The silence between them stretched. Islyn could feel it pressing in on her from all sides—thick, heavy, suffocating. Her heart pounded loudly in her chest as she stared at Drakaris, her thoughts racing, colliding, refusing to settle. “With me.” His words echoed in her mind. Not a suggestion. Not a question. A turning point. Her fingers curled slightly at her sides. “I don’t even know you,” she said, her voice steadier than she felt. Drakaris didn’t react. Didn’t argue. Didn’t defend himself. He simply watched her. “You don’t need to,” he replied calmly. Her brows furrowed. “That’s not how this works.” A faint shift in his expression—something almost amused. “No,” he said. “That’s exactly how this works.” Her jaw tightened. Everything about him was too certain. Too controlled. Too… dangerous. “I’m not going anywhere with you,” she said firmly. The shadows at her feet stirred. Traitors. Drakaris’ gaze flickered downward briefly—then returned to her face. “You already are,” he said. Her pulse spiked. “What is that supposed to mean?” He took a step closer. This time— She didn’t move. Didn’t run. Didn’t retreat. Not because she trusted him. But because something inside her had gone still. Listening. “You crossed into the human world,” he said quietly. “You lost your pack.” Another step. “You severed your bond.” Closer. “You awakened power you cannot control.” He stopped directly in front of her. “And now,” he finished, “You think you still have the luxury of choice?” The words hit harder than she expected. Her breath caught. Because deep down— She knew he was right. Her life—everything she knew—was gone. And whatever she was becoming… She didn’t understand it. Didn’t control it. Couldn’t survive it alone. “I could leave,” she said, though her voice had softened. Drakaris tilted his head slightly. “You could,” he agreed. That surprised her. “I won’t stop you.” Silence. Then— His voice dropped. “But you won’t make it far.” Her chest tightened. “That’s not a threat,” he added calmly. “It’s a fact.” The honesty in his tone unsettled her more than anything else he had said. No manipulation. No lies. Just truth. Her gaze dropped briefly. The ground beneath her feet felt different now. Unstable. The shadows shifted again. This time— She felt them. Not as something separate. But as something… connected. Her breath slowed slightly. “What happens,” she asked quietly, “if I go with you?” Drakaris didn’t hesitate. “You learn.” A pause. “You survive.” Another. “You become what you were always meant to be.” Her throat tightened. “And if I don’t?” His gaze held hers. Unflinching. “You lose control,” he said. A beat. “And eventually…” His voice dropped to something quieter. More dangerous. “You lose yourself.” The wind picked up around them, carrying a faint chill. Islyn closed her eyes briefly. Her mind flashed— To the nightmare. To her father reaching for her. To the shadows swallowing him whole. To her silence. Eight years of silence. Eight years of pretending she was nothing. Her eyes opened slowly. “I’m not doing this because of you,” she said. Drakaris’ expression didn’t change. “I know.” Another pause. “I’m doing this,” she continued, “because I don’t have another choice.” A flicker of something crossed his eyes. Approval. “Good,” he said. That word again. As if her defiance pleased him more than obedience ever could. Islyn exhaled slowly. “Fine,” she said. The word felt heavier than it should. “I’ll go with you.” Silence. The world seemed to still. And then— Something shifted. Not around her. Within her. The shadows at her feet rose slightly. Not violently. Not uncontrollably. But… knowingly. As if they had been waiting for this moment. Drakaris watched them carefully. Then— He looked back at her. “Then we leave now.” Her brows furrowed. “Leave? Where?” A faint smirk touched his lips. “Home.” Her stomach dropped. “That’s not my home.” His gaze darkened slightly. “No,” he said. “It’s mine.” Before she could respond— He stepped closer. Too close. Her breath caught instantly. “What are you—” The words never finished. Because the world shifted. The air warped. Heat surged around them— Sudden. Intense. The shadows reacted immediately, swirling upward as if pulled by something far stronger than them. Islyn gasped as the ground beneath her feet seemed to disappear. Her body tensed— Instinct screaming. But before panic could fully take hold— A hand wrapped around her waist. Firm. Unyielding. Steady. Drakaris. “Don’t fight it,” he said, his voice low near her ear. The heat intensified. Not burning— But consuming. The world blurred. Darkness and fire twisted together, folding space itself as something ancient and powerful pulled them away. Islyn’s heart raced wildly. “What is this?!” she gasped. “Travel,” he replied simply. That was not helpful. The sensation was overwhelming— Like being stretched and compressed at the same time. The shadows clung to her. Not in fear. In instinct. And then— Everything stopped. Silence. Stillness. The heat faded. The ground returned. Slowly— Carefully— Islyn opened her eyes. And froze. This wasn’t the human world. This wasn’t the pack. This was something else entirely. The sky above her glowed faintly—streaked with deep reds and golds, as if fire itself lived in the air. The land stretched endlessly, dark stone and jagged cliffs carved by something ancient and powerful. And in the distance— Massive structures rose. Not built. Forged. A kingdom of flame and power. Her breath caught. “What… is this place?” Drakaris stepped beside her, his presence grounding and overwhelming all at once. “The Pyraxis Empire,” he said. A pause. Then, quieter— “Where you will learn who you truly are.” Islyn stared ahead, her heart racing, her world shifting once again. She had left everything behind. And stepped into something far greater. Something far more dangerous. And deep down— She knew. There was no going back.
