Zain's POV (Earlier that day)
"Ramon, can you ask the warriors if they were able to track down Xaar by any chance?" I asked my beta, as we drove for the Alpha Council meeting.
Goddess, I hated those f*****g meetings.
Imagine putting a bunch of testosterone-pumped Alphas in one room, trying to prove who had the bigger d**k, or, in this case, was the bigger d**k. And doing all this while trying to be politically correct.
The worst of it all was that they expected everyone to play nice. And I hated playing nice. After all, I was not the nice brother.
That was York. Out of the three of us, he was the sweetest. He was sweet enough to give anyone diabetes. I sometimes wondered if he was related to me at all.
I was the cocky bastard whose job was to be manipulative and politically correct, which also meant that I could not always be an outright asshole to people.
Trust me, there were so many times I wanted to be just that, especially during these Alpha Councils. Unfortunately, my other brother,
Xaar, did enough of that already for all three of us.
Xaar, the intelligent, strong, and powerful Xaar Third wheel of us Raven triplets, and the one who was hell bent on being a jerk.
If you ask me, Xaar was so much more than a person. His policies, his agenda, his warrior camp—they were all brilliant both in terms of thought and execution.
Mind you, he was the most fearsome warrior I had ever known, but the only thing he wanted people to know about him was that he was an asshole. And he never left any stone unturned to deliver that message.
"Alpha Xaar just returned to the Ravenwood. One of the warriors saw him at the Rangers a while back." My beta, Ramon, informed me.
Thanks, Ramon." I was glad Xaar was back. At least now I could get a hold of him once I got back from this useless council meeting.
He had been missing in action for the last few days, and I knew he was up to something with the Rogue program, but I had no idea what it was.
My mind was still preoccupied with the Rogue program and Xaar when my phone rang.
"Hey baby, I was just calling to check if you had reached?" My chosen mate and Luna’s voice rang through the speaker.
As much as I adored Mesha, I just wished she did not call me baby. I never really liked that particular endearment, especially for myself. Calling a six-foot four-inch hulk a "baby’ should have been banned.
"Almost there, anytime now. What are you up to?"
"Nothing, just going over to grab lunch with York. Though I will use this time to catch up with family since you are not around,"
Xaar had never really warmed up to Mesha, so I was glad she and York were friends. It was York who had introduced us five years ago.
I had never found my mate; none of us had. Not that we were looking, but in our thirty-eight years of existence, we had hosted enough mate balls at Ravenwood and had not even come close to suspecting any of the she wolves as our mates.
However, it had never bothered me. The way I looked at it was that for a good part of my life, I had tons of women instead of just one.
The advantage of that is that you could do whatever you wanted, with whomever. And boy, all that experimenting was fun, from threesomes to orgies.
I had done it all; had it all.
When I met Mesha, I was not looking at a serious relationship either, and neither had I been in many. In fact, we were friends for the first few months. We had dated for over two years before we got married.
It was two years ago that York suggested that the pack needed a Luna and that the Raven family would eventually need an heir. He had little hope from Xaar, and he himself was too shy and reserved to remotely meet the right girl. So I was the only one left.
Mesha seemed like a good choice; she had all the Luna qualities. In addition to that, we had many common interests, and she was also super accommodating to me. Sure, she came with some frills, but she was easier to live with than most.
Even York thought she was a good fit, so I took her on as my wife and Luna.
As chosen mates, it was not mandatory to mark each other; it was the couple’s choice. And Mesha wanted to protect herself in case I found my fated mate. Not that I saw it happening at this point in my life, and I had told her so, but she was insistent.
And it was not a big deal for me; my wolf didn't mind not marking her I fact he preferred it. So, it was decided that we would not mark one another but rather be legally married.
Mesha had turned out to be a good wife, proved to be a good Luna, and did everything she was asked to. Basically, everything was fine with her, with us, but I often felt that something was amiss. A spark that was missing.
Maybe that was what they called the "mate bond." Not that I f*****g cared.
"Alpha, we are here," Ramon announced as we reached the council hall.
As I entered the hall, Red was standing there with Azuro and that bastard, Shane.
Alpha Shane hated us with a passion. That did not mean others did not hate us, after all, we were the infamous triplets.
Alpha Shane, on the other hand, was a different story, and as luck would have it, we shared pack borders. And he was the kind of asshole who would fabricate lies just to get what he wanted.
"Alpha Zain," Enzo called out to me from the other side of the room. He and Azuro’s families were enemies for generations, so I wasn’t surprised he was not standing with the other group.
"How’s it going, Enzo?"
"You are late," Enzo commented.
"No, I am right on time. Please, I refuse to come in early so I can gossip like women." I teased him.
Before Enzo could revert, Alpha John called the council to order.
"Morning Alphas! Welcome to the monthly meeting." Alpha John addressed everyone.
"Before we move on to the agenda, can I request that we refrain from disrespecting the council and the alphas at any point in time?" He said this as his eyes found mine.
Yeah, no prize for guessing that this one was for me. Like I cared.
Alpha John was a good man, a little too proud for my liking, but he was a just council chairperson, though he took his job a little too seriously.
And he hated our cocky guts, and the fact that we often undermined his authority.
To my defense, we only did it when it was needed, or maybe not.
"I repeat, no disrespect will be tolerated." He repeated it again as his eyes refocused on me.
He was extra irritated today.
Maybe it had something to do with the very public breakup that his daughter had with Sole Red, Alpha Red’s dear son.
I had no idea how John’s daughter was, but being his seed, she would have been a hundred times better than those spineless Reds, so I had no idea what John or his daughter saw in those Reds.
If you ask me, the only thing Alpha Red was capable of was spinning a story in the media, a skill that was helpful in the elite werewolf world but redundant when it came to running a pack.
That was why he had squandered more of his ancestral money, and sadly, his son was no different.
As per me the only redeeming quality that the Reds had was their heritage—that they were an original family—which earned them their fair share of attention.
I was sure Alpha John’s daughter was better off not marrying that i***t. Not that it mattered to me.
My beta had informed me that his daughter was to attend Ravenwood this year. Now that would be interesting, since Alpha John or his daughter had no idea what was waiting for her at Ravenwood.
It was Alpha Shane's irritating voice that brought my head back to the meeting.
"Alpha John, you cannot let these cursed Ravens run wild." He yelled, starting his monthly rambling about us.
“I am dying to hear what we did this time.”
Mind you, it was a fixed feature of these monthly meetings. I knew he had used the ‘cursed’ bit on purpose so that he could get the support of the superstitious Alphas.
From Shane's look it was clear he had got on to something considerable this time. And he was ready for the first attack of the day on Ravens.
Game on fuckers!!
