Kia and I had known each other since our diaper days. Our mothers were best friends and neighbors. After Kia's mother passed away five years ago, my parents moved her into our home. She was like the sister I never had. "I can't believe how biased all these headlines are." Kia scowled. "How come there is nothing about how Sole tricked you and everyone else?" Till two days ago, all these newspapers had been going ga ga about our fairytale romance. For the goddess' sake, they could not stop gushing about our bright future. And now they couldn't stop pulling me down, making me look like a villain, or worse, making me out to be the damsel in distress. They had even taken my comment about fated mates out of context. On the other hand, there was barely anything negative about Sole Red there, even though it was him and his d**k plastered on the front page of all the newspapers. "You can attribute these lovely words to Alpha Red's great media management skills. If there is something he knows, it is how to spin a story." Kia agreed with me, that this had to be Sole's father's doing. "And the worst thing is that the majority of people even believe it," Kia suggested. As those words left her mouth, I knew there was something even worse than the thing she believed was the worst. And that was that, the Reds didn't care. They didn't care about fabricating these stories, they didn't care about playing with my emotions or tarnishing my image. I mean, we were family friends, they used to refer to me as their daughter. And even if I let Alpha Red's tactics slide, what about Sole? Did he not care that all of this was only going to hurt me more? Did the five years that we spent together mean nothing to him? Probably not. If it mattered, then he would have told me months ago, when he found his mate. The icing on the cake, she was one of the refugees that we had taken in. Mom had assigned her to me, and I was the one helping her with school and her studies, so she could apply to college. Which meant that all this had been going on right under my nose for the past three months. All of a sudden, all those extra helping hours that Sole wanted to put in to help her get through college made sense. Huh! The betrayal stung even more. Clearly, he had never bothered to think about me. I mean, even on the engagement day, after I caught Sole red-handed, all they were concerned about were their own agendas. Moisture built up in my eyes, as conversation from that night flitted through my wandering mind. "Couldn't you keep it in your pants for two more days?" Alpha Red had yelled. "Doll, it's just for my wolf. He needs her, he is weak without her." Sole had said, " I can't reject her because of my wolf, but you are my Luna." "You don't need to see these again," Kia said, getting me out of my dazed state. Next, she picked up the pile of newspapers stacked in front of me, and dumped them in the trash can, putting them all on fire. "There, that is done and dusted," Kia exclaimed. "It is not dusted, Kia, it never will be," I sighed. "It is just news, Aria, it will die down in two days." "But it is not though, is it?" I snapped at Kia, "We are talking about my whole life. Two days ago, I had everything planned out. I knew who I was marrying and to whom. I knew where I was going to college, and when. I knew what the next two years looked like, as well as the next ten and twenty. I had it all planned out." My words hit home harder than I intended them to. My wolf itched for the security that my familiar life plans brought. As the uncertainty seeped deep into my life, it brought out all my underlying insecurities. The truth was that I had no control over any aspect of my life. The life that I had known was gone, and I no longer knew where I stood in this world. "Life happens, Aria. You should know that there are no guarantees in life," Kia reminded me, making me wonder if she was also referring to how her life had turned out, how the sudden demise of her parents had changed everything. "I know your life might have appeared perfect for like two seconds. But we both know now that it was far from perfect." As much as I did not want to admit it, she was right. The way Sole was hiding his mate was messed up. "You need to stop wallowing and get your ass out of this bed and room." Kia threw my clothes at my face, as she started on the water for the bath. "Go take a bath, we are going for ice cream," Ice Cream? Kia never liked ice cream, or anything sweet. "Ice cream makes it all better, as you will see." Her words seemed to cut through something deeper, something personal to her. It was not just a random suggestion, she was talking from experience. I wondered if something had happened this year when she was traveling across various packs looking for her mate. Both of us were supposed to go together, but since I and Sole became chosen mates, I never made that trip. Two hours, four ice cream sundaes, and a dozen pitiful looks later, I felt better. Was it the coldness of the ice cream that had made my heart numb or the sugar that played with my brain’s dopamine pleasure centers, putting me on a feel-good rollercoaster? I didn't know, and I didn't care, I was just glad for the reprieve from all those consuming emotions that drove my heartache, giving way to my insecurities. But that didn't last long; good things seldom did. "Oh my girl, my poor darling," Biana, one of our classmates, called out to me loudly from the cafe entrance, gathering all the attention to our table. "You must be feeling awful after what Sole left you," she said even louder as she walked towards our table. "How are you feeling now?" Biana continued in her deafening voice, "You must be heartbroken." "I am good, Biana, you worry too much." I bleated with my mouth stuffed with ice cream. "How can you be OK? Your whole life has been destroyed." She might as well have used the mike. "Till yesterday, you were the luckiest girl alive. Envy of everyone across the packs, and now it's all gone." Anger sizzled on my skin as I looked back at her. Of course, they all expected me to be devastated. Uh huh, correction, they all wanted me to be devastated. But what was worse was that, till some time ago, I was mourning my life for what it could have been, for the same reason. I didn't want to be those girls, I didn't want Sole to have this much control over me or my life. "That's not how I see it." I told her off while trying to sound more confident than I was. "Sole and I were in a relationship. It ended, big deal. That's not the end of my life. Sole was just a part of my life, but there is more to life than a relationship. I certainly hope that is the case for every girl in this day and age." I took another bite of my ice cream as I concluded my ambitious monologue. 'Good speech,' Kia mind linked me, 'I hope you are going to practice what you preach.' I wanted to roll my eyes at Kia, but now was not the time. "Oh, ah, right. So what's next then?" Biana nudged, as I dug into my sundae. "I think I will go with the pink bubble gum flavor next. No more chocolatey stuff. I never thought I would be sick of chocolate, but you know, never say never." 'She wasn't talking about the ice cream.' Kia clarified to me through mindlink, but not before Biana had already spoken about it. "College. College is next," I blurted out. "So are you still going to the Red School of Arts and Commerce?" Was I? I didn't have an answer to that question, mostly because I had not given college any thought. I had not given anything any thought, all I was doing was wallowing in self-pity. Goddess, didn't Biana have anything else to do? Why did she have to ask so many questions? No wonder they called her 'BBC'- Biana Broadcasting Corporation. The question she had posed still hung over my head, waiting for an answer. And that answer was not just for her, but for me too. Would I still go there? I certainly didn't want to. In fact, I didn't want to go there in the first place, even before all this drama went down. The Red School of Arts and Commerce, located in Red Pack, was one of the most renowned schools, but by all measures it was number two, way behind the University of Ravenswood. The University of Ravenswood was located in the capital of the Raven Pack and was by far one of the oldest and most reputed schools. It was miles ahead of the Red School in terms of its faculty, research, and overall academic program. It was super difficult to get through, but I aced the admission and interview. Why was I going to the Red School of Arts and Commerce to start with? Well, it was mostly because of Sole. He hated the Raven Pack, and the idea that his Luna would go there just never sat well with him. "No, I will be attending the school at Ravenswood University," I informed both Biana and myself of that decision. "You will?" Kia was as shocked by this piece of news as Biana was. "I mean, of course, it is the best school out there, and that is where I will be going. And not that I need it, but given my academic record, they also give me a full scholarship." Not that I needed one, but it was a good ego boost. Biana had found the piece of gossip that she was looking for, and, with her curiosity satisfied, she had left us alone. Me, Kia, and my next scoop of ice cream. "What about Uncle John? Do you think he will be OK with this?" Kia inquired, and she was right to worry. My father had been weird about the Ravens forever. His was not an obsession like Sole's, but he just didn't get along with them. They were all members of the Alpha Council, where my father was the elected chairperson. However, the Alphas and Ravens had their own influence and were seldom deemed the unofficial heads of the council. Maybe it was just a power struggle, or maybe it was something more. My father had very explicitly expressed his discomfort with Ravenswood University last year as well. At that time, I had not argued, because I too wanted to be where Sole was. I knew he would not be delighted about my college plans, but I knew my way around it. "Maybe not," knowing very well it was just a matter of time. "Then..." I stopped Kia mid-sentence, putting my hand up in the air as I started counting in my head, it would be any minute now. Bzzt. My phone beeped, with the news notification. That was quick, and it was certainly an interesting piece of news, but that was not the only thing I was waiting for. Bzzt Bzzt Bzzt Bzzt. Just in time, my mobile phone roared to life, with the caller ID indicating that it was the call I was waiting for. As soon as I picked up the phone, my father's voice rang through the speakers. "Aria?" "Yes, Father." "Daughter, we need to talk."
