Chapter 15

1340 Words
Indie POV It’d been a long two weeks. Everyone had been really busy, so it was up to me to keep the house maintained and keep Bear entertained. I wanted him in pre-k this year, but until we got things sorted with Jack, I didn’t want Bear too far away. If he's with me, I can keep him safe. I just had this icky feeling whenever I thought of being away from him, and I don’t think it was due to my trauma. It’s been six weeks since we left. And his lawyers were trying to delay the divorce process while Kai was doing his best to push forward. He’d had the abuse case reopened with CPS and the police. He’d sent copies of all the proof, and also had me meet with the chief of police, DA, and Judge over zoom. Clearly, I was not the woman that had come in to ‘drop the charges’ and I was able to let them know that she was his secretary and one of his mistresses. He’d been seeing her for about 6 months before Bear and I ran. I knew he’d been cheating on me a lot longer than that. However, I didn’t know with who. Once it was made certain that we wanted charges pressed, now against Veronica too, we left the police and lawyers in Colorado to do their jobs. Hound had been in contact with his PI friend and found out that Veronica is living with Jack in our house, his house. We have proof of this, and will be using it in the divorce. Granted, this is all just more evidence that we’re incompatible. Anything to show a judge that we’re not meant to be, and sign the divorce. We also learned that she’s 16 weeks pregnant according to her medical records, and her emails, where she got a link to a photographer with announcement pictures. We also gathered evidence of Jack cheating on Veronica with strippers, along with his coworkers who visit these clubs weekly. It’s for the late night “weekly work meeting to make sure we’re all on the same page and that all the projects are running smoothly” meeting. That’s what he always told me. Thank goodness he hasn’t given me anything. Kai was kind enough to give all the evidence of each separate affair to the wives of his coworkers at his firm. He’ll probably lose his job soon. Veronica might even lose her job too. Partners aren’t supposed to fraternize with ‘junior associates’ or anyone, basically, in any sort of relationship, other than that of a coworker. It will be hard to pay all the bills plus legal fees if he’s out of work. Oh well. We can get a divorce from him one way or another. I’m just looking out the window into the backyard. There was a room upstairs that had been designated for storage when we first moved in that I’ve slowly been turning into my own office. I love it. There’s a large window facing the backyard, with a window bench. It needs a new cushion on the window seat, but thankfully this room is big enough that I can use a corner of it for all of my sewing stuff. Which means I can go back to making all my pillows, curtains and blankets. I'll make a cushion cover once I find a cushion big enough to fit the window bench. There are built-ins on the far wall that I plan to fill with books, and bins for sewing and crafting materials. I cannot wait. I’m currently looking out the window, taking a break from organizing all the sewing stuff, and just thinking about everything that's been happening recently. I see Reid hanging from the edge of the treehouse, while Bear tries to pull him up. You can clearly see Reid doing all the heavy lifting there, but he pats Bear on the back as they compare muscles. So much has been happening with Jack fighting the divorce, Veronica was arrested for impersonating another person to have the case dropped. She had to pay a fine and was let off with "time served" since she was in jail over the weekend. Ugh. I feel like we're just poking the hornets' nest with all this legal action. All I want is a goddamn divorce and full custody of Bear. The door creaks open, and Kai is standing there, looking positively evil. “What happened now?” Dreading the answer. I'm not cut out for all of this drama. I want a peaceful life with my son. That's all. “He has a PI looking into where you both are. He told him we’re keeping you and Bear against your wills. He’s also filed a motion saying all the evidence has been fabricated, and it needs to be verified. His PI is going to be a witness to ‘a husband searching tirelessly for his kidnapped wife and son’.” He did the air quotes, funny voices, and still looked irritated as all get out. "Thankfully, we know that’s not the case. However, after talking with some friends from law school, they believe it would be a good idea to get back on your socials, and start to upload some positive stories about you and Bear. If you keep the shots of Bear without his face in them, there’s nothing they can say. Jack won't be able to claim you're exposing him to whoever is on the internet, and it will show you're both adjusting well.” “Alright. I’ll take one now.” Getting up, I went to the door, and did a partial panorama of the new office. I uploaded it to IG with the caption, “Getting my new office set up. Can’t wait to be writing again. Thanks for the new desk Big Bro” and tagged Kai in it. Turning the phone, so Kai can see the screen, I asked, “like this?” “Yes. Perfect. I would also wait to post anything, meaning everything, about you and Reid. I know you guys are friends, but I don't think Jack will see it that way, nor will he miss the chance to prove how 'easily she moved on' from him. It's not a good idea. He could claim you were cheating also, even without proof. It would cast doubt on our case. However, that doesn’t mean you can’t post pics of friends. Just check with everyone before you post something. Okay? Don’t know who wants to stay hidden.” He cautioned. I knew there were people within the MC who were either running from someone bad, or needed to lie low because of a recent job. I would never do anything to put someone in danger like that. Lord have mercy. “Okay. Wanna help with dinner? We can come up with some more fun s**t to post.” I chuckled, pushing him out of my new sanctuary. This place would hopefully be where I pen the next great American novel. But it'll probably just be all the smutty stuff running through my mind that finds its way onto the pages that I'll write. "What shall we have?" "Oh I don't know, fettuccine? With garlic bread and a salad?" "Caesar?" "Sure. Are you making the dressing again?" "No," he pouted. Last time Kai attempted to make homemade Caesar dressing, the whole house smelt like fish for days because he had forgotten to take out the trash. Never again. I made sure he bought it. Always. "I learned my lesson. I'll make the chicken and steam the broccoli for the pasta. Can you make the Alfredo sauce?" "Sure." Getting started on dinner, I was able to let my thoughts wander until we were setting the table and calling everyone to eat. We were going to beat Jack at this game of cat and mouse. I wouldn't let him steal my happiness from me. Not when I've just found it again.
