Indiana POV
Getting home, I hurried to make dinner for Bear, and a few snacks that he could have in his room. I had to keep him in there so he wouldn’t have to see or hear anything. God only knows what tonight will bring. I tried not to think of it. I got Bear ready for bed, and I hurried to the kitchen to start broiling his steak over veggies. I hope he liked how I made dinner tonight. I came across a similar recipe on Pinterest. Rushing to get ready, I put on a nice dress, cute undergarments, and minimal make-up, because I couldn’t put in zero effort. I don’t want to be any more injured when we run tomorrow. I need to be able to go quickly.
Back in the kitchen, I checked on the steak and veggies. Everything looked and smelt excellent. The dining room table was set. The salad was already out, now I just needed him to come home. Checking the time above the stove, it was 5:59. He should be coming through the door any moment. I stood waiting, checking the clock, what felt like every few moments. It was about 6:30, and Jack still wasn’t back. I plated the food, and sat down. By 9 pm, with the food cold and no sign of him, I ate. I cleared my plate and left his there. Blowing out the candles, I began to clean up the kitchen. I heard the garage door opening as I put the last dish in the drying rack. I turned and began wiping off the counter tops and stove.
I heard him making his way through the kitchen behind me to the dining room. I heard the light switch flick up, illuminating that my plate and dinner were gone while his remained.
“Who said you could eat?” He said loudly. I clenched the paper towels in my hand with the cleaner bottle in the other hand. I closed my eyes, taking a deep breath. I could tell by the tone in his voice. He was drunk. Tonight was going to be bad. f**k. “Did I not say to keep my dinner hot?”
“I’m sorry, it’s after nine, I didn’t” The sting came as my vision had spots in it. I was actually dizzy. His arm was across his body where he’d extended that long arm and brought me down. I was on the floor, holding my cheek, blinking rapidly, trying to get my vision to clear up. I quickly got on my knees, touching my head to the ground, and begging for mercy.
“Please. I’m so sorry. Please. I’ll never do it again. Please don’t hit me.”
This was the wrong thing to say. Usually, he’s happy with the begging and asks me to beg more. Not tonight. Tonight is different. Tonight…did he find out? Oh god. Am I going to die? He grabs me by the hair, dragging me to the dining room. He throws me. I am coughing and wheezing as the ribs he bruised three days ago slam into the table leg. He throws his plate on the ground along with all the other dishes left on the table.
“You f*****g b***h! You think you can talk back to me?!” He was shouting. I am praying that Bear hasn’t heard anything over his TV show. I pray he’s fast asleep. I keep quiet so he won’t hear me and get worried. “Get up!”
I stood, shakily, holding my side, trying to breathe. It felt like I couldn’t take a full breath. “Come here.” I froze. He wanted me to walk through that? f**k. I started walking. Looking for the places with the least amount of glass. My feet were a bloody mess by the time I made it to him. I could feel the glass splintering my feet. f**k. I could feel my eyes getting wet at the backs. I could feel them starting to fill. I couldn’t let him see me cry. I wouldn’t give him the satisfaction. He pushed me back into the kitchen.
“Why do you have to make me mad kitten?” He caressed my cheek, looking at my lips. He leaned in, and I reacted. I hit him in the nose with the heel of my hand. After all the things he’s done to me, I don’t want him near me.
“You. f*****g. b***h!” He roared. He punched me square in the face. I felt my nose break. Stumbling back, I fell into the chairs at the island bar. He stalked over to me, picking me up by my dress, punching me in the face again. The back of my head bounced off the floor. He stood up and kicked my legs and stomach. My ears are ringing when I hear a tiny “MOMMY!”
“No” I whisper. I held my hand up to stop Bear from running over. Jack grabbed me, pulling me up to my bleeding feet.
“I said he was to be asleep. Didn’t I, Indiana?”
“Yes. I must have forgotten to lock his door. Forgive me. Please. Not while he can see.”
He smiled a sinister smile at me. Then next thing I know, I feel my head collide with the wall, and my son is standing in front of me. I try to stand, but my vision keeps trying to go black. My ears are ringing and what I can hear sounds like it’s all underwater. I heard Bear scream. Forcing my eyes to open, I saw Jack dragging him away. My baby is screaming and crying. His face was red, with tears flowing down his chubby little cheeks. His black hair is sticking to his face, as his dad pulls him away. Bear’s tiny hand reaches for me and I can’t keep my eyes open. Darkness swallows me.
Fuck.
Kai POV
It’s 6:10 am. Where is she? Why isn’t she answering? f**k. Pulling out my phone, I texted Leif asking if they could run a trace on her phone that her husband had in his name. Three minutes later, no sign of Indie and Bear. No text from her. No calls. My phone dings. It’s Leif.
Prez: She’s pinging at her house. Need the address?
Atlas: Nah. I know where it is.
Prez: Let me know.
Sticking my phone in my pocket, I pulled out of the parking lot and headed to her house. Something is wrong. I know it is. I can feel it. It’s a twin thing. I feel like I can’t get there fast enough. Pulling up to her house, it looked like it was empty. I pulled into the driveway and parked. Walking up to the front door, cutting off the truck since this is an uppity neighborhood with nosey neighbors, I didn’t want to bring any more attention to myself. I rang the doorbell. Nothing. I peeked in the windows. Nothing. Reaching up on top of her porch light, I grabbed her spare key.
Entering the house, the first thing I hear is my nephew calling for his mama. I turn the camera on my phone on, heading upstairs to see if she was there. She’s not in any of the rooms, but Bear is. With a busted lip. I opened his door and he flinched at me.
“Who are you?” He asked so terrified of me, he ran to the corner of his room, holding a stuffed dinosaur.
I crouched down, trying not to look like the giant of a man I knew I was. At 6’6”, I was a giant to my little nephew. “I’m your Uncle Kai. I’m mommy’s twin brother. Did she tell you about me?” He nodded. “Where is mommy buddy? I’m here to take you and mommy on a vacation.”
He started crying, and I couldn’t understand a word he was trying to tell me. I slowly made my way over to him, and got him semi-calm. Calm enough for him to tell me that he last saw mommy in the kitchen when daddy hit her. I looked around the room, checking under the bed and pulling out his go-bag, tossing it over my back.
“Come on little man. I need to get you in my truck. I’ve got your stuff, okay? Then I’m going to find mommy and get her some help. Okay?” He nodded again.
Coming back in the house after getting him buckled, and turning the truck on so he could listen to the radio and have a warm place to wait til we came back, I ran upstairs to see if she had a go-bag for herself. I grabbed the file from between the mattress and started looking for the loose floorboard partially under the bed. Pulling out the duffle, I ran downstairs to find her. I needed to find Indie. Coming down the stairs and making my way to the garage through the dining room, I heard a moan from the kitchen. Turning, my heart stopped.
There, in a puddle of blood was my baby sister. I kept the camera running the whole time. Probably only ten minutes total, but it felt like hours. f*****g hours. Frozen in place, it wasn’t until she tried to pick her head up and let another pained moan that I seemed to start moving again. I hurried around the kitchen, looking for a clean towel to put against her head. I grabbed two bags of frozen peas out of the freezer. I leaned down and took stock of her.
She needs a hospital.
“Indie. It’s Kai.”
“Kai” She wheezes, her left eye is swollen shut. Her right eye opens, and instantly fills with tears. Her nose is broken. She’s got blood matted in her hair where it looks like she was put through a wall. Her feet are all bloody, and she looks like she’s in pain when she breathes.
“This is going to hurt. But I have to move you. Can you move your toes?” She wiggles them. Slowly, but it’s there. “Fingers?” Again, slowly. “Can you move your neck? Does anything feel broken other than the nose?”
“Ribs.” She barely gets out.
“Okay. I’m going to lift you. I’ve got some towels, peas, and I got the bags and Bear. We’re going. Now.”
“Hospital. Pictures.”
“I got this. You just focus on being okay til we get to a hospital. Not one here. I don’t want anyone tipping him off that I’ve got you.” I lifted her as gently as I could. Indie bites back a scream. I know this hurts. I’m trying to be gentle. “Did he…umm…he didn’t…”
“Not this time.”
Fuck. That makes me want to rage. This fucker. This mother fucker!
“Okay.” I kissed her forehead as I got her into the passenger seat. I reclined it as far back as it would go. I ran in and grabbed a few of the pillows off the bed and helped to cushion her while we drove. "Closest hospital outside this city was 54 miles away. Less than an hour. Can you do it?”
“Yes.”
That’s all I need. Hang in there, sis. “I’ve got you. Bear, keep talking to mommy, okay? Uncle Kai has to make some phone calls. Mommy, keep talking to Bear. Don’t stop talking to each other.” I looked in the rearview and Bear looked at his mom, and reached his hand out. Indie took it. These two should never have had to go through this. Pulling out of the driveway, I made quick work to the ER. We needed to go out of town before he noticed, or a neighbor called.
