The warning

Rain started before Vito reached the warehouse. Heavy rain. It covered the city in gray and made the streets almost empty. Vito didn't care. His mind was on one thing. Bruno. And the file with Lina's mother's name. He stepped out of the car. Marco was waiting by the warehouse door. Did you find it? Marco nodded. Everything is inside. Vito walked in. The warehouse smelled like dust, oil, and wet concrete. Three men were standing near a table. On the table was the missing money. Two million dollars. Vito looked at it for a few seconds. Where is Bruno? He left before we got here. Vito's jaw tightened. Of course he did. Marco picked up a black folder. This was inside the office. Vito took it. His eyes went straight to the name. ELENA REYES. He opened it. There were old photographs. Documents. A newspaper clipping. And one picture that made his heart stop. Lina. She was about eight years old. Her mother was holding her hand. The same picture from the old file. But there was something different. Someone had written a date on the back. June 14. Marco looked over his shoulder. What is it? Vito didn't answer. He turned the page. There was a report. Elena Reyes — suspected witness. Vito read the next line. Transferred before questioning. Then another. Child placed in temporary care. His fingers tightened around the paper. Lina had been taken from her mother. Not abandoned. Taken. Boss? Vito looked up. Find out where Elena was transferred. Marco nodded. We'll check the old records. No. Vito closed the file. Check every record. --- Lina was still at the police station. Judge Toni sat across from her. He had been quiet for several minutes. Finally, he spoke. Your mother was involved with Don Rocco. Lina looked down. I know. But not the way you think. She looked up. What does that mean? Toni leaned forward. Your mother wasn't one of his people. Then why was she with him? She worked for a company that handled his accounts. Lina frowned. She worked in an office? Yes. That doesn't make her mafia. No. Toni opened his folder. She found something. What? Money being moved between several companies. Lina's stomach tightened. Stolen money? Money that was never supposed to exist. She didn't understand. Toni continued. Your mother discovered that Don Rocco was hiding money from his own people. Lina stared at him. Why would she care? Because she was a good woman. Lina looked away. That sounded like her mother. She tried to tell someone? Yes. Who? Toni's face became serious. Salvatore's father. Lina froze. Salvatore? Yes. So Don Rocco and Salvatore's family were already fighting? They were never friends. Toni closed the folder. Your mother knew too much. Lina's eyes filled with tears. What happened to her? Toni didn't answer. Judge Toni. He sighed. We don't know. Lina's heart sank. But she's dead? No body was ever found. Lina stopped breathing for a second. What? Your mother disappeared. Lina stared at him. But I was told she died. Who told you? The people at the home. Then they lied. Lina stood so quickly her chair moved backward. My whole life... Her voice broke. They told me she was dead. Toni looked at her sadly. I'm sorry. Lina covered her mouth. Tears ran down her face. Her mother could have been alive. For years. Somewhere. Waiting. And Lina had never known. The door opened. Vito walked in. He saw Lina crying. His whole face changed. What happened? She looked at him. My mother might be alive. Vito stopped. Toni stood. You need to talk to her. Vito nodded. Toni left the room. Vito walked toward Lina. He didn't touch her. Not this time. He simply stood beside her. Lina wiped her tears. Why didn't you tell me? I didn't know. You knew she disappeared. I found out tonight. She looked at him. Everything around me is a lie. Vito's voice was quiet. Not everything. How do I know? You don't. That answer surprised her. Vito looked down. You have every reason not to trust me. Lina swallowed. Do you know where she is? No. But you're going to find out? Yes. Why? Vito looked into her eyes. Because you deserve the truth. Lina didn't know what to say. For once, Vito wasn't ordering her. He wasn't telling her what to do. He was simply standing there. Waiting. She whispered, Thank you. Vito nodded. Then his phone rang. He answered. Speak. Marco's voice was low. We found the old records. Vito's face became serious. Where was Elena taken? There was a long pause. Then Marco said, An old private hospital. Vito frowned. Which one? Saint Maria. Vito went still. That's impossible. Why? That hospital burned down fifteen years ago. Marco was quiet. Not all of it. Vito looked at Lina. He knew what he had to do. We're going there. --- The hospital stood at the edge of the city. Most people avoided it. The windows were broken. The walls were black from the old fire. The sign was hanging by one chain. Lina stood beside Vito. This is where my mother was? Maybe. She looked at the building. I don't want to go inside. You don't have to. Lina looked at him. But I will. Vito nodded. They walked inside. Marco and two men followed behind. The floor creaked under their feet. Dust covered everything. They passed old rooms. Empty beds. Broken machines. Old papers scattered across the floor. Lina held her arms close to herself. This place feels wrong. Vito looked around. Stay close. She looked at him. You're doing it again. What? Giving me orders. He paused. Sorry. Lina blinked. Vito looked almost uncomfortable saying it. It's fine. They reached the old records room. Marco opened the door. Rows of boxes filled the room. They searched for almost an hour. Then Lina found something. A small box with a name written on it. ELENA REYES. Her hands shook. Vito. He came over. She opened it. Inside was a hospital bracelet. A few papers. And a letter. Lina picked up the letter. The writing was faded. But she knew it. Her mother's handwriting. She started crying before she even read it. Vito stood beside her. Lina unfolded the paper. There were only a few lines. Lina, If you are reading this, I failed to protect you. I need you to know one thing. I never left you by choice. Don Rocco will tell you I betrayed him. That is a lie. Trust no one who says they know the whole truth. Especially— The rest was torn away. Lina stared at the missing piece. No. She turned the paper over. Nothing. That's it? Vito took a breath. For now. Suddenly, a sound came from the hallway. A door slammed. Vito pulled Lina behind him. Marco raised his gun. Someone's here. Footsteps moved quickly through the building. Vito signaled his men. Check the exits. They ran. Vito stayed with Lina. Then they heard a woman's voice. Quiet. Weak. Lina? Lina froze. Her heart stopped. She knew that voice. She hadn't heard it in fifteen years. But she knew it. Mom? Vito looked at her. The voice came again. Lina... She ran toward the hallway. Vito grabbed her arm. Wait. That's my mother! It could be a trap. Lina pulled her arm away. You don't understand. I do. No, you don't! She ran. Vito followed. They reached the end of the hallway. There was no one there. Only an open door. And on the floor... A fresh pair of shoes. Someone had been there seconds ago. Lina stared at them. Her eyes filled with tears. She was here. Vito looked around. Then he saw something on the wall. A small silver circle. The same symbol. Lina's mark. Vito's phone buzzed. A message from an unknown number. You were close. Then another. But you are too late. Vito's eyes hardened. A final message appeared. Tell Lina her mother is still alive. Lina read it over his shoulder. Her legs almost gave out. Vito caught her before she fell. For the first time, Lina didn't push him away. She held onto his shirt. And whispered through her tears, Find her. Vito looked down at her. I will. But neither of them noticed the figure standing outside the broken hospital window. Bruno. Watching. Smiling. Because the truth about Elena was finally coming out. And he knew something Vito didn't. Elena had never been alone.
