Chapter 2: Bloodlines and Betrayals

Selene's head whirled as Aiden's words rang in her ears. Second chance, mate. For a while, she was paralyzed, her mind racing to make meaning of what had just occurred. The comments were ludicrous, a twisted ridicule of all she had previously believed. She was meant to be unbound to the past, no longer bound by the chains of rejection. But now there was Aiden, a cold-blooded assassin assigned to murder her, saying she was his second-chance mate. Her breath froze in her throat, and her heart pounded so hard that it nearly muffled the voice in her thoughts. Impossible. But as she looked into his piercing, tormented eyes, the authenticity in them was evident to her. There was no deceit or secret goal. His words were sincere. The connection, the pull between them, was undeniable. No. She couldn’t allow herself to feel this. Not again. Not after what she had gone through. She had spent years establishing an empire, wielding power, and blending seamlessly with the darkness around her. Her past, her previous life, was something she had hidden. And yet, here it was, crawling back to haunt her in the form of this assassin. Aiden’s knife lowered slightly, but his eyes never left hers. He was ready to strike, his fingers quivering barely sufficient for her to recognize. The air seemed suffocating, charged with an almost tangible intensity. "I'm sorry," he said quietly, his words were gentle, yet heavy with hurt. "This isn't how I envisioned things. I didn’t choose this.” Selene’s heart clenched as she took in his words. Didn’t choose this? He hadn’t chosen this path, and neither had she. None of it was her choice. Not the rejection, not the exile, and certainly not the bloody fate that seemed to be tying them together once again. “You didn’t choose this,” she echoed, her voice steady but laced with a bitterness she could barely control. “You didn’t choose to be my mate. You didn’t choose to kill me.” His gaze darkened. “I didn’t want to. But I was given no choice.” She moved back, creating space between them. Her mind was racing with the ramifications of his words, but she couldn't let herself get absorbed now. Orion’s pack was in danger. The world was changing, and she had a role to contribute to it, whether she accepted it or not. She couldn't let the twist of fortune that led Aiden back into her life get in the way. "I don't have time for this," she screamed, breaking the dense quiet. "I have a pack to save, and I don't need you to complicate things further." Aiden stiffened his jaw but did not say anything. They both remained still for an extended period of time. Then, as if sensing her determination, he took a gradual step back, sheathing his knife with trained accuracy. "I'll help you," he stated resolutely. "But you have to realize, Selene, I am not doing this for you.” I'm doing it for me. She arched an eyebrow, suspicious. “For you? What’s in this for you, assassin? You already have your mission.” "I was sent to get rid of you," he said, his voice low and hesitant. "But when I found you and saw you again, something changed. I'm not sure why. I have no idea how. But I can’t follow through with the order. Not now. Not after what I felt.” The words lingered in the space between them, intense with unspoken meaning, each one like a stab to Selene's breast. Their combined weight threatened to crush her. She had been alone for so long, struggling for her survival in a society that despised her kind, and now this—this assassin, who had come to take her life, was offering to stand by her side. But, what did it mean? Was it the mate bond that had drawn him to her? Or was it something darker, a manipulation of fate that had lured them both into this tangled mess? Selene didn’t know, but one thing was certain—Aiden’s presence would change everything. She needed to determine his part in this, If he was worthy of her trust, and the extent of her heart she was prepared to gamble. After all, he'd come to kill her. Still, there was something about him—something weak, something broken—that drew her in unexpectedly. She moved away from him and walked approached the window, her mind muddled. "You're correct. You do not owe me anything. But the pack... Orion’s pack is in danger. And time is slipping away. I’ll deal with you later.” Aiden did not answer, but she felt his gaze on her as she was ready to depart. She felt the weight of his stare, a continual reminder that the past was always on her mind. "Let's go," she said, eventually turning around to face him. "We have work to do." The trip through the city felt weird, like if they were in a dream, with flashing lights and shadows. Selene kept her focus ahead, her mind racing. Orion’s plea had been genuine. She could hear it in his voice. But why had it taken him so long to call for help? And why had he waited until everything was falling apart to reach out to her? Aiden occupied the passenger seat, his stillness nearly overpowering. His gaze would occasionally shift to her, but he never said anything. His presence seemed uneasy. There was so much she didn't understand about him. So much he wasn’t telling her. But she knew one thing for sure—he was more than just the assassin who had been sent to kill her. He was part of something bigger, something that tied into her past, her bloodline. And she would find out what. They reached the outskirts of the pack territory just before dawn, the first light of morning breaking over the horizon. Selene’s mind shifted from questions about Aiden to the immediate threat before her. The pack had always been a place of strength. It was where she first discovered herself and her potential. But now, standing on the brink of the area, she couldn't escape the sense that something was very wrong. The pack's scent lingered in the air, but it was polluted by dread and confusion. There was more to it than just the scent of wolves. Something darker. Aiden didn’t speak as she parked the car and stepped out into the cool morning air. He didn’t need to. He was already moving with the quiet elegance of a predator, his instincts more acute than anybody else's. "Stay close," she said, her tone tense with caution. She couldn’t afford any mistakes now. The stakes were too high. The moment they entered the forest, the quiet was unnerving. There were no wolves around, no sentries, no patrols. Just the empty rustle of leaves in the wind. "What's going on?" Aiden asked, his voice calm, his gaze scouring the foliage. “This doesn’t feel right.” Selene didn’t answer immediately. She was trying to piece it all together. Everything about this felt wrong—too wrong. Orion had been desperate, yes, but this? This was something else. Then, suddenly, the ground under her feet moved. The earth shaken, causing a strong a jolt ran through her body. A low growl echoed from the darkness, the sound deep and guttural—too loud to be from any wolf. Something massive, something ancient, stirred within the trees. Before she could respond, the trees erupted in activity—silhouettes rushing from. The darkness, their eyes gleaming crimson with hate. Dr. Myles. The truth crashed over her like a tidal wave. He had found them. This time, he arrived with something far more frightening than she had anticipated. A low, malicious laugh came from behind her, coursing shudder through her body. “Welcome back, Selene. It’s been a long time.”
