The Grave Robbers
Episode 4
Written by Charles N Okere
The long-awaited day finally arrived. Desmond and his crew drove to a spot where they had agreed to pick up Solomon and Wisdom. After exchanging pleasantries, they got into the car and drove away. The journey was lengthy, taking them from the city to its outskirts. Eventually, they arrived at a community that would be the site of their operation.
They stopped under a large mango tree and alighted from the cars. However, Wisdom was hesitant to exit the vehicle, wanting to know the reason for the sudden stop in a forest-surrounded area. Solomon rebuked him, scolding him to stop acting like a child and get out of the car. Wisdom finally emerged, though feeling uneasy and looking around suspiciously.
Desmond handed each of them a small red fabric, which they tied around their foreheads. He then brought out a calabash, performed some incantations, and distributed palm fruits for everyone to eat. While the others obeyed, Wisdom pretended to eat his but secretly discarded it.
They returned to the cars and continued driving. After a while, they reached a junction and turned into a dark, isolated garden. Although it was nighttime with bright moonlight and stars, the atmosphere turned dark as they entered the garden, as if shrouded in a dark mist. This sudden change sent a chill down Wisdom's spine. He glanced at Solomon and the others, expecting them to share his concern, but they remained calm.
Moments later, they arrived at an ancient, peculiar gate. They pulled over and exited their vehicles.
Desmond instructed them to untie the small red fabric they had tied around their heads and rub it on their faces. Everyone obeyed except Wisdom, who pretended to comply. Next, Desmond brought out a liquid from a local rubber container and poured some drops onto their hands. They then rubbed it on their faces as instructed, but Wisdom disobeyed again.
Desmond explained that tonight's task differed significantly from their previous ones. "This operation is the most dangerous yet," he said. "We're not stealing gold or diamonds, but the bones of an ancient evil wizard and sorcerer, and those of a powerful witch." He added that the client was willing to pay $30 million, with Desmond taking a percentage and the rest being shared among them. Everyone smiled in agreement and thanked Desmond.
They successfully collected the witch's bones and placed them in a luxurious bag. As they were about to retrieve the wizard's skull, their flashlights suddenly went out, except for Wisdom's, which turned red. A hot wind, akin to a tornado, swept through the cemetery, accompanied by eerie laughter. While the others remained calm, Wisdom shivered with fear. He tried to turn off his flashlight, but it wouldn't go off, even after he smashed it on the ground.
After the atmosphere returned to normal, Desmond collected the skull and put it in a different bag. He instructed them to kneel and bow, touching their foreheads to the ground, which they did. They repeated this gesture on their way out of the cemetery.
At the gate, Desmond asked them to retie the red fabric around their heads. Everyone complied, except Wisdom, who claimed to have misplaced his. However, he had intentionally discarded it at the wizard's grave. Desmond provided him with another one, performed some incantations, and they entered the cars to leave the community.
Unbeknownst to them, they had made a critical mistake by allowing Wisdom to join them in the car as they drove out.
To be continued. ...
