Friday afternoons belonged to basketball. The entire student body seemed to gather around Crestwood Academy’s outdoor court, filling the bleachers with laughter, cheers, and school spirit. Music blasted through the speakers while cheerleaders rehearsed one routine after another.Olive loved Fridays. Not because of basketball.Because of Ramsey .She adjusted the ribbon in her ponytail as she stood beside the other cheerleaders, trying to focus on the routine.“Five, six, seven, eight!”The girls moved in perfect synchronization.Olive smiled when she was supposed to smile.Clapped when she was supposed to clap. But her eyes searched only one person.Ramsey.He jogged onto the court, spinning a basketball effortlessly on one finger before tossing it toward a teammate. The crowd erupted.Girls screamed his name. Some even held handmade signs.Olive couldn’t help smiling. He was tall enough to tower over almost everyone else, with dark hair that constantly fell into his eyes no matter how often he brushed it back. His smile carried an easy confidence, but it never seemed arrogant. She remembered the first time she had truly noticed him.It wasn’t during basketball. It was during Physics Week.Ramsey had stood confidently before the entire school, presenting a project on renewable energy. He explained complex theories so effortlessly that even students who hated physics understood every word.Olive had stared at him through the entire presentation.“How can someone be this handsome…””…and this intelligent?”Ever since then, every basketball game had become an excuse to admire him from afar. The whistle blew. The game began.Ramsey intercepted the ball, dribbled past two defenders and scored within seconds. The bleachers exploded with applause.
Olive laughed with everyone else, though her heart was beating for entirely different reasons.
She wondered…Would someone like Ramsey ever notice someone like her? Then another thought crept into her mind.A darker one. What if he found out?
What if one day she couldn’t control herself around him? What if she stole something that belonged to him?Would anyone ever choose to love a girl who couldn’t even trust herself?Would anyone date a thief? The thought lingered long after the final whistle announced Ramsey’s team’s victory. After the game, Olive headed toward the parking lot with her tennis teammates.Laura bounced excitedly beside her.“We need new grip tape before tomorrow’s tournament.”
“And tennis balls,” another teammate added.
“The sports store nearby has everything,” Laura said. “Come with us.”Olive hesitated.Normally, shopping trips meant family outings, personal assistants, or online orders delivered to the mansion. She had never really wandered through stores with friends before.
It sounded…
Normal.
“I’ll come,” she said.Laura grinned.
“Finally! Miss Rich Girl is hanging out with us.”The girls laughed.
For once, Olive laughed too.The sports store smelled of fresh rubber, leather, and new fabric.
Rows of sneakers lined the walls.Shelves overflowed with rackets, jerseys, and colorful sports accessories. The girls quickly scattered in different directions.Laura immediately disappeared toward the tennis section.“I’ll be over here!” she called.Olive wandered slowly through the aisles. She enjoyed looking at things even when she had no intention of buying them.Or perhaps…She only wanted to believe that. Her fingers brushed across rows of tennis skirts before drifting toward another display.Pink.A limited-edition collection.A pair of soft pink tennis sneakers.Beside them sat a matching headband. And elegant pink gloves. She smiled without realizing it.They would look perfect for tomorrow’s match. She imagined herself walking onto the court dressed entirely in pink.Without hesitation, she picked up the items. Her hand instinctively reached into her handbag for her credit card.
Then…Everything stopped.A familiar pressure settled inside her chest.Hot.Heavy.Unavoidable.
“Don’t pay.”The thought appeared from nowhere.
“Put them in your backpack.”
Olive froze.“No,” she whispered under her breath. She could buy them.
She had enough money to buy ten pairs.“Just do it.”She shut her eyes. Not here. Not today. Not in front of people. Her breathing became uneven. She gripped the shoebox tightly, trying to steady herself.“Please…” she begged silently.“Go away.”
The urge only grew stronger. Before she fully realized what she was doing, she slowly unzipped her backpack. Her hands trembled. She looked left.No one.She looked right.Still no one.Very carefully…She lowered the shoebox toward the opening. Then a voice behind her shattered everything.“Olive?”Her body froze. She turned slowly.Ramsey stood only a few feet away. His basketball hoodie hung loosely over his shoulders, and a shopping basket rested in one hand. His expression wasn’t angry. It was confused.Deeply confused. His eyes shifted from Olive……to the half-hidden shoebox……then back to her face.“What are you doing?”Olive couldn’t breathe.Every explanation sounded ridiculous.“I…”Nothing came out.Her face burned with humiliation. She quickly pulled the shoebox back out of her backpack, but the damage had already been done.Ramsey stared at her for a long moment.
Finally, he sighed.“Come with me.”Olive lowered her head. She followed him in complete silence.Every step toward the checkout counter felt heavier than the last. When they reached the cashier, Ramsey placed the sneakers, headband, and gloves on the counter.
“I’ll pay.”Olive’s head snapped upward.“What?”He ignored her.
The cashier scanned each item before announcing the total.Ramsey pulled out his card and paid without hesitation.Olive could only stare.Outside the store, he handed her the shopping bag.She refused to take it.“I had my card,” she whispered, tears threatening to spill. “I could have paid.”“I know.”
“Then… why?”Ramsey studied her carefully.
“Because I don’t think this was about money.”
Olive’s heart stopped. She looked away, unable to meet his eyes. How was she supposed to explain something she barely understood herself? How could she tell the boy she’d admired for months that she wasn’t trying to steal because she was greedy…She was trying to steal because, for a few unbearable moments, her own mind had convinced her she had no other choice. And just like that…The possibility of Ramsey ever seeing her as anything more than a schoolmate disappeared before it had even begun.
