Chapter One

568 Words
School started and there was only one new face. Most of the kids she grew up with or were once a new face but in middle school. She was paired with him in History class. Why history class she would never understand. She couldn't remember his name but she didn't need to. She had enough to deal with. Her mother has been ignoring her since a few months after the incident with her father and her best friend was trying to hook her up with every Tom, d**k, and Harry. A new student was nothing compared to her present problems.  The new guy didn't seem to mind being ignored except for the occasional question or command it was as if the two didn't exist in each others world. Amelia was fine with that but Caterina was dumbfounded. She couldn't quite understand how Amelia could ignore her History partner so blatantly and it seemed every other conversation they had was about how Caterina was hearing rumors about the new kid.  Amelia preferred her solitary confinement, as Caterina so eloquently called it. Lunch rolled around and Caterina jerked her head up, which wasn't unusual for her, when Amelia sat down at the table.  "Hey do you work after school? I know it's a half day and all but I was thinking if you weren't getting extra hours we could do something. Just you and me." Caterina asks with her mouth full. Amelia looked at her friends' lunch and sighed. Of course she would bring something like homemade stuffed shells to lunch on a half day.  "No but I'm behind on my personal reading so I'll probably just be in the café reading, listening to music and then homework. I have to watch Greyson when he gets home from school. Mom went to her boyfriends for the weekend and hasn't come back home yet." Amelia shoves the uncrustables in her mouth. "But that's not for another almost six hours. Literally we get out in ten minutes. You're going to do everything at the café in six hours? You can hang out with me instead." Caterina batted her eyelashes and pouted. At that moment John walked up and sat down. "Sorry I'm late. I wanted to finish my test instead of wait until tomorrow to finish it like the rest of the class. But hey...wait Amelia are you working?" Amelia rolled her eyes, " No John I don't work this afternoon. I'm playing babysitter. So you can have Caterina all to yourself." "You sure. I feel bad for taking her from you so much. Caterina tells me you've been dealing with a lot lately and I know what it's like to need a friend. But I'm here for you if you need one." John smiles the smile that makes Caterina melt. Honestly, Amelia thinks they should be voted prom king and queen. They have been together since sophomore year and will probably get married. "John, you know I consider you my friend, but if I wanted you to know my dark details I would tell you." Amelia grabs her bag lunch and throws it away. She heads out to her car and goes home. She knows she doesn't need to because she'll have a list of chores or be reminded that her Mom is hiding out at some mans' house but she needs her headphones.   How else would she listen to Spotify?
