“Look who we have here.”
I knew that voice.
Slowly, I turned around.
Mira was standing a few feet away from me, holding a handbag in one hand.
My smile immediately disappeared.
Of all the people I could have met in this shop, Mira was the last person I wanted to see.
I quickly turned to James.
“Let's go to another shop,” I whispered.
James looked at me in confusion.
“Why?” he asked, frowning.
“A person I don't like is here,” I said.
“So?” he replied, completely calm.
I stared at him in disbelief.
“What do you mean, so?” I asked, my voice rising .
He looked at Mira, then back at me.
“Why should we leave for her? She came shopping, and we came for the same reason. Why will we be the ones to leave for her?” he said, folding his arms.
“James, please,” I said softly.
“No,” he said firmly.
“We came here to get your corporate clothes. We're not leaving because somebody you don't like walked into the same shop.”
“You don't understand,” I said quietly.
Before he could respond, Mira walked toward us.
She looked at me from head to toe.
“So, Lisa,” she said, smiling faintly. “Shopping for new clothes?”
I forced a smile.
“Yes,” I replied
“For a new job, I suppose?” she added, tilting her head.
My heart skipped.
“How did you know?” I asked, my voice tightening.
She smirked.
“Your face says it all. I guess as a cleaner or PA… because that’s all you can be,” she said casually.
James stepped closer to me, his presence protective.
“You two know each other?” he asked, looking between us.
“Yes,” I answered quickly, forcing calm into my voice. “I used to work for her… my last job as a PA,” I added.
Mira looked at James.
“Hello, Mr. James,” she said politely, though her eyes were cold.
“Can I have a conversation with her just for one minute?”.
James looked at me.
I nodded slowly.
Mira turned and walked away.
I followed her.
We walked toward a quieter part of the shop. When she was sure nobody was around, she stopped and turned to me.
Her smile disappeared instantly.
"hope you haven't told anyone ?” she asked sharply.
“Yes,” I said quietly.
“Then I hope you remember what will happen if you ever open your mouth,” she said.
“Mira, I haven't told anyone,” I said quickly.
“Good,” she replied coldly.
She stepped closer again.
“And I don't want anyone to know about it.”
“I won't,” I said firmly,
“Not James,” she said.
“Not your mother. Not your father. Nobody.”
“I said I won't,” I repeated.
She stared at me for a long moment.
“You better not, Lisa,” she said slowly.
She lowered her voice.
“You know your father is out of detention because of us, me and my mom paid off the loan he took ".
I nodded slowly.
“And if word gets out about what happened that night, I will make sure your father goes back to jail,” she said coldly.
My heart dropped.
“Mira, please,” I said, my voice breaking.
She shook her head.
“I’m serious.”
“I already did what you want me to do,” I said bitterly.
She gave me a cold smile.
“We saved your father which means you should be very grateful” she said.
I felt my hands tighten.
“I am grateful,” I said quietly.
“Then keep your mouth shut,” she ordered.
“I will,” I whispered.
Then her expression changed.
“Anyway, don't forget about my engagement party next weekend,”
She smiled proudly.
“To Mr. Williams,” she said, watching my reaction closely.
So that's his name.
She turned and walked away.
I stood there for a few seconds, my chest rising and falling quickly.
I didn't want to think about it.
I shook my head and returned to where James was waiting.
He was standing beside several piles of clothes.
“What is all this?” I asked.
“Your clothes,” he said.
I stared at the pile.
“You picked all these?” I asked, shocked.
“Yes,” he replied
“James!” I exclaimed.
“What?” he asked innocently.
“You picked half of the shop,” I said, shaking my head.
I took a few dresses and walked toward the fitting room.
One by one, I tried on the clothes James had picked.
Eventually, I found a few that I actually liked.
I stepped out wearing one of the dresses, smoothing it down.
James looked at me and paused.
“That one,” he said immediately.
“What?” I asked.
“That one looks good, you should wear it on Monday to make good impression,” he suggested.
I looked at myself in the mirror, turning slightly.
I tried on the other clothes I had chosen.
In the end, I picked several office dresses, two trousers, a few blouses, and a blazer.
James nodded as we headed to the counter.
“Now you look like someone who works at M&S Global,” he said.
I laughed.
“Thank you,” I said.
“You're welcome,” he replied.
We paid for everything with the money I was given for compensation and left the boutique.
During the drive home, I looked through the window, lost in thought.
My mind kept going back to Mira's warning.
I couldn't tell James.
My parents.
Anyone.
At least, not yet.
James glanced at me.
“You're quiet today… you’re supposed to be happy,” he said.
“I'm just tired,” I replied softly.
“Okay,” he said.
When we reached my house, he parked outside.
“Thanks for today,” I said
He smiled.
“Your new job is the important thing now,” he said.
“Goodnight, James,” I said.
“Goodnight, Lisa. And don't forget, you have to look professional on your first day,” he added.
“I won't,” I said firmly.
I picked up my bags and got out of the car.
When I entered the house, I found my parents already eating dinner.
My mother looked up immediately.
“Lisa, you're back".
“Yes, Mom,” I replied.
She looked at the bags in my hands.
“What did you buy?” she asked.
“Work clothes,”.
My father looked at me.
“Work clothes?” he repeated.
I smiled, my heart lifting.
“I got the job,” I said.
They both stopped eating.
My mother stared at me in disbelief.
“You got a job?” she asked.
I nodded.
“Yes,” I said.
Her face immediately lit up.
“Oh my God!” she exclaimed, standing up.
She hugged me tightly.
“Thank God” she said.
I laughed softly.
She pulled away and looked at me.
“This is a big opportunity, Lisa,” she said.
“I know,” I replied.
My father smiled warmly.
“Congratulations, my daughter,” he said.
“Thank you, Dad,” I replied.
He looked at the bags.
“So these are your new work clothes?” he asked.
“Yes,” I said.
“That means you're really starting soon,” he added.
“Yes,”
“You don't know how proud I am of you,” she said softly.
“Thank you,” I said.
For the first time in a long time, I felt light.
I had a new job.
A new opportunity.
A chance to start again.
She picked up her spoon again.
“Now sit down and eat “.
I sat beside them.
I pushed everything else out of my mind.
The accident.
Mira.
The secret.
The engagement party.
Everything.
I just wanted to enjoy the good news.
I had gotten the job at M&S Global.
And for the first time in days, I felt like maybe my life was finally moving in the right direction until I get to the work on Monday.
