Chapter 6: The Hidden Room

1108 Words
The drive to Richard Sterling's abandoned estate was silent. Amber sat in the passenger seat of Adrian's black luxury car, her fingers tightly wrapped around the silver key. The photograph rested in her lap. No matter how many times she looked at it, she couldn't understand why her father had kept Ethan in his life after catching him stealing. Or why Ethan had returned years later under a different name. There were too many questions. And not enough answers. Beside her, Adrian kept his eyes on the road. His expression was unreadable. But Amber could tell he was worried. "How far is the estate?" she finally asked. "About twenty minutes." Amber nodded. The key felt strangely heavy in her hand. As though it carried the weight of a secret that had been buried for years. The silence returned. Then Adrian suddenly spoke. "Your father visited the estate often during the last year of his life." Amber looked up. "Why?" Adrian hesitated. "I don't know." His jaw tightened. "But I know he was hiding something." Amber glanced at the key again. Maybe she was about to find out what. The Sterling Estate stood on the edge of a forest. It was enormous. A beautiful mansion surrounded by iron gates and ancient trees. Yet despite its size, it felt lonely. Forgotten. The moment Amber stepped out of the car, memories flooded her mind. She used to spend summers here with her father. Running through the gardens. Playing hide-and-seek with the staff. Listening to her father's stories by the fireplace. A painful ache settled in her chest. She missed him. More than ever. Adrian unlocked the gate. It creaked open. The sound echoed through the empty property. Something about the place felt wrong. Too quiet. Too still. Almost as if someone was watching them. Amber shivered. "Are you okay?" She nodded. "Just a strange feeling." Adrian's eyes swept across the property. "I feel it too." Together, they entered the mansion. Dust covered the furniture. White sheets draped over forgotten memories. Sunlight streamed through broken windows. The entire house felt frozen in time. Amber walked slowly through the grand hallway. Every step stirred memories. Then her gaze landed on a portrait hanging above the fireplace. Her father. Smiling warmly. For a moment, Amber's eyes filled with tears. "Hi, Dad." Her voice cracked. "I wish you were here." A gentle hand touched her shoulder. She turned. Adrian. For a brief moment, neither spoke. Then Amber looked away. If she kept staring into those dark eyes, she might actually cry. And she refused to cry. Not anymore. Not for Ethan. Not for Bliss. Not even for the past. She had revenge to complete. After searching for nearly an hour, they found nothing. No hidden room. No secret documents. Nothing. Amber sat on the edge of an old couch. Frustration burned inside her. "There has to be something." Adrian frowned. "Your father wouldn't leave a key for no reason." Amber looked around. The answer had to be somewhere. Then her gaze landed on the portrait again. Her father's portrait. Something felt strange. She stood up. Slowly. Carefully. Then she walked toward it. "What is it?" Adrian asked. Amber didn't answer. Instead, she studied the frame. Her heart began to race. There. A small keyhole hidden behind the painting. Her breath caught. "Adrian." He immediately joined her. His eyes widened. "You found it." Amber pulled out the silver key. For a moment, she hesitated. This was it. The secret her father had protected. The secret someone had broken into the estate to find. The secret Ethan might be searching for. With trembling fingers, she inserted the key. Click. A loud mechanical sound echoed through the room. Then— RUMBLE! The fireplace shifted. Dust exploded into the air. Amber jumped back. A hidden passage slowly appeared behind the wall. Her eyes widened. "Oh my God." Adrian stared at the opening. "Your father built a secret room." Amber's pulse pounded. Together, they entered. The narrow staircase led underground. The air became colder with every step. Darker. Heavier. Almost suffocating. Finally, they reached the bottom. A steel door stood before them. Amber pushed it open. The room beyond looked like a private office. Bookshelves lined the walls. A large desk sat in the center. And on top of the desk rested a single video recorder. Waiting. As though someone expected them to find it. Amber slowly approached. Her hands trembled. There was a note attached. In her father's handwriting. For Amber. The sight nearly broke her. Without hesitation, she inserted the tape into the recorder. The screen flickered. Static filled the room. Then— Richard Sterling appeared. Alive. Smiling. Amber's breath hitched. "Dad..." The recording began. "If you're watching this, then something has happened to me." Amber felt tears burning her eyes. His voice sounded exactly the same. Warm. Comforting. Safe. Richard's smile slowly faded. "Amber, what I'm about to tell you is extremely important." Adrian stepped closer. The room became silent. Richard continued. "If you're seeing this, then there is a very good chance someone is trying to steal what belongs to our family." Amber's pulse quickened. Richard looked directly into the camera. "As much as I wish I could protect you myself, I know I may not be there." A lump formed in Amber's throat. Then Richard said the words that changed everything. "The man you know as Ethan Carter is dangerous." Amber froze. Adrian's eyes widened. On the screen, Richard sighed heavily. "His real name is Ethan Blackwood." Amber felt her heart stop. Her father knew. He knew everything. Richard continued. "Years ago, I caught Ethan stealing from my company." Amber and Adrian exchanged shocked glances. Then Richard lowered his voice. "But that isn't the worst part." The room suddenly felt colder. Much colder. Richard leaned closer to the camera. And then he revealed a secret neither of them expected. "Ethan isn't acting alone." Amber's blood ran cold. "What?" Richard's expression darkened. "There is someone behind him." The mysterious man. The unknown figure from the photograph. Amber's heart hammered. Who was he? Richard's next words sent chills down her spine. "And if anything happens to me... it means they have already made their move." Suddenly— CRASH! Glass shattered somewhere upstairs. Amber jumped. Adrian instantly stood. His face became deadly serious. Someone was inside the mansion. And they were no longer alone. A slow creaking sound echoed from the staircase. Footsteps. Coming closer. Closer. Closer. Amber's pulse raced. Whoever had broken into the estate had found them. And judging by the timing... They had been waiting for Amber to discover the secret room. To Be Continued...
