Chapter 7: The Intruder

949 Words
The sound of footsteps echoed through the hidden passage. Slow. Deliberate. Getting closer with every second. Amber's heart pounded so hard she could hear it in her ears. Beside her, Adrian's expression turned ice-cold. The warmth she had occasionally glimpsed in him vanished instantly. In its place stood the ruthless billionaire feared by the entire business world. "Stay behind me," he ordered quietly. Amber wanted to argue. But something in his voice stopped her. The footsteps grew louder. Closer. Closer. Then— Silence. An eerie silence settled over the hidden room. Neither Amber nor Adrian moved. The old video recorder continued playing. Richard Sterling's image flickered on the screen. "...if you're watching this, then trust Adrian." Amber's eyes widened. Adrian looked equally surprised. The recording continued. "He is one of the few people I know who would protect you with his life." For a brief moment, Adrian looked away. Almost uncomfortable. But before Amber could process her father's words— BANG! The steel door slammed shut. Amber gasped. The sound echoed throughout the underground room. Someone was outside. Someone had found them. Adrian immediately rushed toward the door. He grabbed the handle. Locked. "Damn it." Amber's pulse raced. "Who is it?" Adrian's jaw tightened. "I don't know." A loud laugh suddenly echoed from the staircase. A man's laugh. Cold. Mocking. Familiar. Amber's blood ran cold. She had heard that laugh before. But where? The voice echoed again. "Looks like you're finally finding the truth." Amber froze. No. It couldn't be. Her hands began trembling. Because she recognized the voice. The mysterious man from the hotel photograph. The unknown accomplice. The hidden mastermind. The same man who had haunted her father's recording. "Who are you?" Amber shouted. Silence. Then— "You'll find out soon enough." The voice sounded amused. As though he were enjoying a game. Adrian slammed his fist against the steel door. "Show yourself!" The man laughed again. "No." A pause followed. Then his tone darkened. "Not yet." Amber felt chills run down her spine. This wasn't Ethan. This wasn't Bliss. This person felt far more dangerous. Far more intelligent. The voice returned. "Tell me, Amber." Her heart skipped a beat. "How does it feel knowing your entire life was a lie?" The room fell silent. Amber's stomach twisted. Who was this man? How much did he know? And why did he sound so confident? Then the voice spoke again. "Did Ethan tell you why he married you?" Amber clenched her fists. "No." The man chuckled. "Of course he didn't." Adrian stepped in front of Amber protectively. "Enough games." Another laugh. "You always were impatient, Adrian." Amber's eyes widened. The man knew Adrian personally. Adrian's expression hardened. "You." For the first time, genuine anger flashed across his face. "You know who he is?" Amber asked. Adrian remained silent. The voice answered for him. "Oh, he knows exactly who I am." A terrible feeling settled in Amber's stomach. This wasn't just about Ethan anymore. This mystery connected directly to Adrian as well. Then the lights suddenly went out. Darkness swallowed the room. Amber gasped. Her heartbeat thundered in her chest. "Adrian?" "I'm here." His voice came from nearby. Calm. Steady. A source of reassurance in the darkness. Then— A loud crash echoed upstairs. Followed by another. And another. Someone was tearing the mansion apart. Searching for something. The hidden room shook slightly. Dust fell from the ceiling. Amber's pulse raced. "What are they looking for?" The answer came immediately. "You." The mysterious voice sounded much closer now. Far too close. Amber's blood turned to ice. How? How had he gotten closer? Suddenly a faint emergency light flickered on. The room glowed red. And for a split second— Amber saw a shadow standing outside the glass panel of the steel door. Watching them. Smiling. Then it vanished. Amber's breath caught. The smile. For some reason it felt familiar. Terrifyingly familiar. The video recorder crackled. Richard Sterling's image returned. His voice echoed through the room. "Amber, if you've reached this point, then there is one final truth you must know." Amber turned toward the screen. Her father's face looked grim. More serious than she had ever seen. "The accident that killed your mother..." Amber froze. Her mother? "...was not an accident." The world seemed to stop. Amber stared at the screen. Unable to breathe. Unable to think. Her mother had died in a car accident when Amber was ten years old. At least that's what she had always been told. Richard's voice trembled slightly. "She was murdered." Amber's knees nearly gave out. "No..." Tears filled her eyes. Her mother. Murdered? Who would do such a thing? Richard swallowed hard. Then he spoke the name. A name that made Adrian go completely still. A name Amber had never expected to hear. "The person responsible was..." The screen suddenly went black. Static exploded through the speakers. The recording ended. Amber stared in horror. "No!" The tape had stopped. The name was gone. The answer was gone. And somewhere beyond the steel door, the mysterious man began laughing. A slow. Satisfied. Terrifying laugh. As though he had planned this exact moment. As though he wanted Amber to know the truth was within reach... But not yet. And then he spoke one final sentence before disappearing. "Welcome to the real game, Amber Sterling." Silence followed. A deadly silence. Amber looked at Adrian. Adrian looked at the blank screen. Neither of them spoke. Because they both realized the same thing. The revenge Amber had planned against Ethan and Bliss was only the beginning. There was a much bigger enemy hiding in the shadows. And he had finally made his first move. To Be Continued..
