Chapter 2 The Widow

387 Words
My name is Rachel Kelly. I was the widow living inside this gilded prison. The day news of Jones's death came back, I didn't shed a single tear. Everyone else cried. I didn't. I stood in the wind, biting my lip so hard I was afraid I'd burst out laughing. Jones was a complete hypocrite. The elite circles of the capital praised him as a refined gentleman, a brilliant young CEO. Only I knew the truth. He was a sadist. For three years of our arranged marriage, he played the charming executive in public. Behind closed doors, if anything displeased him, he'd whip me with his belt. Sometimes he'd tie me to the headboard with his neckties and force me to watch him fool around with influencers and models. I endured it for three years. Finally, he died. I thought I was free. Until three days ago, Megan entered my bedroom with two bodyguards, holding a syringe. "Rachel, Jones loved you very much while he was alive." She twisted the ring on her finger as casually as if she were discussing dinner plans. "He's lonely in hell now. As his wife, it's only right that you go keep him company. Don't worry. Once you're gone, the family will announce that you died for love. As for the five percent of company shares you own, I'll take good care of them for you." Die for love? Please. Jones was dead, the Ward Group's stock was tanking, and they wanted to use my death to create the image of a devoted grieving widow. It would save the family's reputation and conveniently swallow my shares. "I'm not dying." I stared straight at her. "You want me buried with him? Keep dreaming." Megan slammed her hand on the table. "How insolent! Rachel is overwhelmed with grief and has attempted suicide by overdose. Hold her down and inject it!" The bodyguards lunged toward me. In that moment of despair, one name flashed through my mind. Davis, Jones's half-brother, the Ward family's illegitimate son. Half the underground businesses in the capital belonged to him now. Even people in politics and business treated him with caution. Everyone said he was ruthless, like a mad dog. He could kill without blinking. If there was anyone in this world who could suppress Megan... It was him.
