Chapter 3 A Deal with the Devil

While the bodyguards weren't paying attention, I smashed the wine bottle beside my bed and pressed a shard of glass against my carotid artery as I backed out of the bedroom. "Nobody come any closer! I'll kill myself right here, and tomorrow's headlines will read, 'The Ward Family Drove Their Daughter-in-Law to Death!'" I ran through the pouring rain. One of my heels was lost somewhere along the way, and the hem of my dress was soaked with mud. I sprinted all the way to the deepest part of the estate. The forbidden area covered in surveillance cameras. Riverside Mansion. Davis sat on the sofa with one leg crossed over the other, casually wiping a knife with a white cloth. He didn't even bother looking up. "Get out." I dropped to my knees on the carpet in front of him. "Davis... save me." My voice trembled. He finally paused and looked over. His gaze swept over my miserable state. My tangled hair, my bare feet smeared with mud, and finally, the silk nightgown plastered against my body by the rain, outlining every curve and the rapid rise and fall of my chest. Being looked at like that by him was even more terrifying than facing the syringe. "Rachel," Davis licked the corner of his lips. "I think you've got the wrong idea. I'm just a bastard son. How would I dare meddle in Mrs. Ward's business?" "You can!" I crawled forward on my knees and grabbed his pant leg. "As long as you save my life, I'll agree to anything! I have evidence that Jones laundered money while he was alive." "Oh?" He stood up and walked toward me, looking down at me from above. The tip of his shoe nudged my knees apart, while the folding knife in his hand lifted my chin. The icy metal rested against my throat. My whole body tensed. "You really think I need that evidence?" "Then... what do you want?" I closed my eyes in despair. "When you're begging someone for help, you should look like you're begging." The cold back of the knife slid from my chin down to my collarbone, hooking open the first hidden button of my nightgown. Click. Davis watched the fear in my eyes, a flicker of twisted amusement flashing across his own. Then he withdrew the knife and turned away. "Tonight at midnight, wear something clean and come to my penthouse. And don't wear anything underneath. Understood?"
