CHAPTER 11: ROUND ONE BEGINS

832 Words
The next morning, Crestwood High seemed normal. Students filed through the halls, laughing, arguing, and juggling backpacks, oblivious to the sinister game brewing beneath the surface. Jordan felt a pit in her stomach. Nothing about today felt normal. She could still feel the weight of the paper taped to the chalkboard in Room 47: “Round One Begins Tomorrow.” She shoved her books into her locker, trying to act casual, but her palms were sweaty. Ethan appeared beside her as if summoned. “Ready?” he asked, a mischievous grin tugging at his lips. “Ready? I don’t even know what’s happening, Ethan! I just know it’s going to end badly!” Ethan shrugged. “That’s the fun part. You don’t know, so your instincts kick in. Makes it more… alive.” Jordan rolled her eyes but followed him. Somehow, he made chaos feel thrilling instead of terrifying. The Announcement First period, the principal stepped onto the stage during the morning assembly. The students expected the usual lecture on grades, dress code, or some tedious motivational quote. Instead, he cleared his throat and smiled in a way that made Jordan’s stomach tighten. “Students,” Principal Graves began, “as part of a special school program, we are introducing something… new. Something that tests your wits, courage, and teamwork.” The entire gym fell silent. “You may call it… The Crestwood Challenge. Starting today, selected students will participate in tasks and trials designed to improve problem-solving and cooperation. Success will be rewarded. Failure… will have consequences.” Jordan froze. Her heart raced as she scanned the room. Several students—some familiar faces from detention, some unknown—looked equally nervous. And then she saw it: Ethan, hands casually in his pockets, smirking. “Round One,” he whispered under his breath. It was happening. The First Task By third period, Jordan found herself in the library with Ethan and a few other students who had been “selected.” A large envelope sat on the table, addressed to them in crisp, official lettering. Jordan tore it open. Inside: A handwritten note: “Find the hidden crest and return it before the bell. The maze begins now.” A small, metal key. A map of the library—but with strange markings she didn’t recognize. Ethan raised an eyebrow. “So, a scavenger hunt?” Jordan’s hands shook. “This is insane. Why would they… hide something in the library? And what’s the crest?” Ethan shrugged. “Guess we’ll find out. Come on.” They started moving through the stacks. The map led them through aisles of dusty books, past shelves marked with cryptic numbers, and into corners where the fluorescent lights flickered. Every sound—footsteps, the rustle of paper—made Jordan jump. “This feels like a video game,” she muttered. “Exactly,” Ethan said. “Except if you lose, it’s real life.” Obstacles It didn’t take long for the challenge to get complicated. Trap One: A stack of books teetered precariously, threatening to fall if touched. Jordan had to carefully navigate without knocking anything over. Trap Two: A librarian with suspicious timing passed by repeatedly, her sharp eyes scanning for “cheaters.” Jordan barely managed to hide behind a tall shelf while Ethan stifled a laugh. Trap Three: A puzzle of symbols carved into the floor—something Ethan quickly decoded using his mysterious map. Each obstacle tested their wits, nerves, and teamwork. Jordan realized she had to trust Ethan more than ever, even though she didn’t fully understand his skills or his motives. The Hidden Crest Finally, in the deepest corner of the library, they found it: a small, golden crest etched with the school emblem. It was tucked inside an old globe, almost invisible. Jordan held it triumphantly—but before they could move, a loud voice echoed behind them: “Not so fast!” It was another team of students, clearly part of the same challenge. A tense standoff ensued. Ethan’s grin widened. “Game faces on.” Jordan’s heart raced. The first real competition had begun, and she felt the thrill of danger she couldn’t deny. The Escape Using a combination of quick thinking, teamwork, and a little luck, Jordan and Ethan managed to escape the library with the crest. They slid the key into a small lock on the trophy case in the hallway, completing the task just as the bell rang. The principal appeared, clapping slowly. “Well done. You’ve survived Round One. But remember—Round Two will be harder. And it’s coming soon.” Jordan glanced at Ethan, breathing heavily. “This… is just the beginning, isn’t it?” Ethan’s eyes gleamed. “Yep. And trust me, you’re going to love every second.” Jordan didn’t know whether to laugh or cry. Somehow, she had a feeling the next round would test everything—her courage, her smarts, and maybe even her heart.
